I am just sick of you being a freakin' Debbie Downer. You obviously don't watch/follow this team nearly as much as the rest of us, so why act like you know how bad off we are?

When you have given to this school, as much as I have, come talk to me. Until then, get off my case for stating facts.

And, please don't bother responding. I will not dignify another one of your posts.

(man, that 'poster ignore' feature can't come fast enough.)

Hold My Own wrote:This is great news. I know some are worried about his record of the past but nobody should be concerned with that. CSU is set up for failure out there in that location and in that conference. he's a great coach but even a better person. I was happy with either Layer or Soucie and made that known from the start.

I'm telling you guys, anyone who's worried shouldnt be. This is truly a great day.
I agree. No one has won consistently at CSU. Also the fact the a year ago folks on this board were bemoaning his leaving and the guys on the Marquette board are doing that now says a lot to me about his abilities. You don't miss a guy you think is a lousy coach.

your blind if you think he was good in those games....
I never said he was good. I said it was improvement over earlier in the year. And that was with no big man coach. With Layer, I can see him getting much better.

What's it going to take for some of you guys to stop being so freaking cynical and questioning every little move and just support the program?

In the mix and top 3 are way different.....you can't predict injuries and such and we have seen what happens if we lose Sanders for any length of time. I think ill take that bet, cause one twisted ankle and i win.

supporting the program and recognizing talent are different things. Smith is a step slow, no big man coach is going to allow him to play significant minutes against a fast team. And since on Radford has quality big men, how long can he stay on the court without fouling thats my concern. I questioned Ritchie and you told me i was nuts, but you came around or have you forgotten?

Okay. I want Liberty to succeed. I have been very vocal over the last few pages as to why I think the Layer decision precludes this. I have taken heat for this... so please, put together a coherent argument as to why this is a good move. This isn't a challenge saying it can't be done. I mean, I wrote an article when Dunton was hired in '02 about why it was a good move. Please someone do the same. I want to believe. I want to be wrong. Someone convince me.

This is what I have so far:
- Layer is a good recruiter
- Layer knows and appreciates the LU atmosphere.

Funny - No official announcement yet. Goggled him and look what I found on his Wikipedia page:

Dale Layer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Dale Layer (born 1958) is the current head men's basketball coach at Liberty University [1]. It marks his second stint as a coach at Liberty; he spent the 07-08 campaign as an assistant to Ritchie McKay.

[edit] Biography

Layer started his coaching career in 1980 after graduating from his alma mater Eckerd College. He spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd (he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University during the 1982-1983 season. He then made the jump to the head coaching ranks, accepting a job at Queens University in Charlotte. He amassed 167 wins against 87 losses in nine years as the head coach, and also served as the school's athletic director.

In 1998, Layer accepted a job at Colorado State as an assistant after Ritchie McKay accepted the head coaching position. Layer helped lead the Rams to an NIT appearance in 1999, defeating Mississippi State and Colorado before losing to the eventual champion, California. [2]

When McKay left CSU in 2000, Layer was promoted to the head job. Layer guided the team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, in 2003. He was twice voted the region's coach of the year by the National Basketball Coaches Association. But after seven years and a 103-106 record (and 31-71 in conference play), Layer was fired.

He rejoined McKay's staff shortly after McKay accepted the job at Liberty University. Layer stayed for a year before heading off to be an assistant to head coach Buzz Williams at Marquette. After the 2008-2009 season, McKay left Liberty and accepted a job as an assistant at the University of Virginia. Liberty contacted Layer about filling the head coaching vacancy, and Layer accepted.

wow...now whenever we're predicting our next seasons record I need to have 10 different records for what they will be if that individual player is hurt? haha...no thanks....we'll be in the mix

I enjoy predicting though...wish we had a pool for predicting our next coach at LU...I would have made a lot of money before he was even contacted by our Athletic Department

So that can't change as a player gets older, gets in a weight/speed program, etc?

People can improve. Smith is one player. He may not even be in the rotation next year. We've got some talent coming in. This isn't about Smith.

(trying to change the subject from slamming one player)

Can recruit, coach, and develop big guys - in the Big South, that's what wins games. One big guy can win you the league.

Coaches defense - we didn't do that last year.

Plays a more conventional system - no five guard.

Now folks before this gets totally out of hand (and really DOES get to a personal level) take anything that doesnt have to do with the discussion of the new coach to PMs. Ed does have a right to be skeptical of Coach Layer based on past history but I will also say that TTL is well within his right to say that he deserves a chance and Ed shouldnt just automatically say he will be a failure here

Don't just stop talking about it. If you want to have a legit discussion on why this could be a good move, let's do it.

What do you disagree with in my post? What type of facts do you need? No one is saying he's coaching Jesus. We're saying he can, keyword can, be successful here.
