We got off on a cheesesteak tangent in the Italian thread over in the Lynchburg forum a few months back. So I thought I'd start up a discussion on the subject once again all to its own. Anybody else hungry?

Since I talked up my experience at White House Subs in Atlantic City so much, I am posting a couple of pics.

If you are industrious you can find more pics on TripAdvisor. But much like Scar's wife, my better half prefers some anonymity on this board so I'll just limit to posting just those two.

Suffice it to say those were the best cheesesteaks I can recall. The bread was outstanding and steak itself was succulent. I give high recommendations.

Now its time for you Philly guys to give us civilized folks the lowdown on what really is the best cheesesteak in America.

OK, I've tried the Phila-Deli like I was told and it was pretty good, but I wasn't blown away. The best places in Lynchburg keep going out of business. It's really frustrating. Philly Steak-out and then Little Nickie's. How about a good Chicken Philly? Those are very difficult to find a good one. You gotta find one that uses ground chicken. For some reason changing the shape of the chicken makes it better.

Luconn, thanks for inviting me to the Phila deli. Next time you go get at me man. I am trying not to eat red meat though until Labor day when I will be in Philly chowing down on a Cheesesteak from Paganos then a hoagie from Lees followed by a waterice from Rita's...Come on Laborday!

Best places in Philly:

Mama's on City Line avenue. Only place where I couldn't actually finish my food!
Paganos in West Oak Lane. My old neighborhood place. If you are not a pig like me, you will get overwhelmed
Pats South Philly
Geno's South Philly

Lee's Hoagie House. They are all over the city.
Many different hole in the wall joints but you may get murdered while you are placing your order. I took my 25 year old nephew to one of his spots near Temple and when he got out the car I looked at him like I wasn't gonna ever see him again  I left the car running and pointed south! He is a big boy though so it was all good.

Rubber Mallet, you have to try Paganos if you go to Philly. It couldn't be further from Geno's and Pat's geographically and still be in the city though. It is at the northern tip of the city just 2 blocks from Cheltenham township. Get a tripple cheesesteak. Provolone, American and Cheese whiz! Divine! I promise you will have trouble finishing. Know what you want and where to stand in line before hand though because the ladies in there are all like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. I seen more than a few tourists get sent to their car for not knowing how to order. They don't ask them to leave, they just make fun of them and get folks to laugh and it ends up sometimes making them say to heck with this and leave. Actually pretty entertaining.

True Story,

I went home after my freshman year at Liberty and almost got in a major altercation for saying hello to a guy I didn't know. I walked by him and said 'whats up?' He replied with his hands raised ready to fight and said, 'WHAT's UP WITH YOU?' in a real aggitated voice. I said I wasn't trying to start nothin and he said keep on steppin man cause you don't know me like that! I had gotten so used to speaking to everyone (esp black people) in Lynchburg whether I knew them or not. That was a close call. So I took him to Paganos and bought him a cheesesteak! Kidding! Didnt' want to be accused of hijacking the thread completely!

It's funny because I prefer the unfriendly atmosphere. I don't like feeling obligated to acknowledge everyone I walk by. It's all fake small talk anyway. I like just looking ahead and getting where I'm going. I guess that's what happens when you're raised in that atmosphere. Driving is great as well. You can cut people off all you like and nobody takes offense because everybody's doing it. If you didn't do it you'd never get anywhere. It's a great time.

I was generally regarded as an arrogant blankety blank for my first semester because I walked around avoiding eye contact and/or looking down and not greeting people.

Later people I knew realized I wasn't being a jerk, but like SCAR said- up here- you don't talk to people you don't know.

And the driving thing- yeesh. Last visit down I noticed people down there STILL have no where to go and all day to get there. They wouldn't last 2 minutes up here, esp in Jersey.

I've found that will all of the insane contruction going on in Boston, (especially now that a lot of the tunnels are closing) if you don't know where you want to go and how to get there, you're dead.

My first actual Philly was from a place called Jim's (I think) which was actually in Upper Darby, near the Tower Theatre. I had a whiz with onions, and it was unbelievable. As for phillies in Lynchburg, The Parlor had a great one, with that Philly bread (the owners were from Philly). Unfortunately, the Sundae Grill put those people out of business (I was ticked). Little Nickie's had a decent Philly too, but they closed up within the past year or two. There are other places to get "cheesesteaks" here, but I've yet to find a proper "Philly" since those two places shut down.

Wasn't Mr. Mac the weird guy at The Center on Boy Meets World? Shawn gets conned into going there and Mr. Feeney has a big problem with it and all of that? Sorry, random lashing out at 1 in the morning.

Yeah-my son and husb. were just up there for Red Sox vs. LA Angels (7 to 6!). Sorry, I can't comment abt. Philly cheesestakes- sad, but true. My time there was spent trying out other "interesting" food I've mentioned in other threads.

I recently received a pretty credible recommendation for 99 Miles to Philly. Going to try to hit them up next time I'm in New York City.
