Why is there no section for the Debate team? I mean, they ARE the best team on campus and unlike the football team have actually won something. Plus, there are already a good deal of debates on this site, it could be a place to officially have them.

well A) its true, and B) its true. And, theyve been putting the most money into football since the school started and its never been good, there are so many other sports on campus that are better and deserve the recognition and funding football has. I mean great they got coach Rocco, but until they start winning i dont think they deserve the praise they get.

Let me clarify...

They are FOOTBALL. You're talking about debate. Yes debate is successful but please... to even talk about the cash that it takes to run a football program vs. a debate program. By the way... our debate team is funded to the tune of close to 1/2 million dollars according to one of the reports done about 4 months ago. According to the coaches Debate is one of Dr. Falwell's babys and it's been getting plenty of cash.

The reality is that Debate will NEVER fill a stadium or warrent a TV contract for the school.

if your talking to me about debating i was kidding around. Yes, Debate has alot of Funding which is good because it does need it, it travels alot. Debate may not ever get the school a TV contract or anything, however, this documentary that is being filmed im sure will help out alot with future enrollment, spreading the word about Liberty to those who may not have heard it, bringing in future great debaters, and many more perks. All im saying is there really should be more respect for the debate team and debaters. I mean not only are we number one, we have the fastest talker in the country, a coach who coached Pres Bush for the 2004 debates and is already working with 08 hopeful candidates, and the list goes on and on.

You guys Qkrlsboy is a debater. He makes a controversial statement that he doesn't even necessarily believe to get it started. Don't fall for the bait (pun inteneded). My wife's cousin is one of the all time greatest debaters in LU history and spent many years after helping out with the team with Brett O'Donnell. I know a lot about the tactics of the debate team as a result. So don't fall for "the Banana in the tail pipe." You youngsters may not get that reference but it is from Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy.

There is a huge difference between an argument with off hand remarks and debate. Saying a rapper would show me up or however it was worded is completely irrelevant, especially since the typical rapper would be disqualified as soon as stepping on stage for dress code, and if not then as soon as he opened his mouth to talk about how high he was the last time he boned his hoe. It is also completely uncalled for since all i really said was that there should be a section for debate. There is a great deal more to it than most people think, and although it may not appear to be as big a deal as football, may not bring in as much money and etc, it does alot more behind the scenes. For instance, there are two MAJOR publications with full length articles on Liberty that are coming out in the next week or so, we are not at liberty to say who they are for some reason, but you will know what i mean when you are in the grocery store and see a particular issue of a magazine that normally has this issue this time of year, or when you pick up a copy of a certain paper from the biggest city. If you still dont know what i mean just wait. However, these 2 articles were not brought on by the "success" of the 1-11 football team( im not trying to put them down, i know they work hard and i love to go to football games) but the authors will straight up tell you as they have told Coach O'Donnell that they were brought on by the recent success of the debate team. Thats free advertising, which is priceless. How many people will take a look at those articles and realize that Liberty isnt some Nazi School trying to brainwash teenagers and young adults to christianize the world, and how many young people (particularly jrs and srs) will see the issue of the magazine and consider an option they never would have prior to the article; actually attending Liberty University. Now i know these articles arent going to make enrollment jump to 20,000 on campus next year, but they will still have huge impact. Especially spreading the word of liberty to people on the west coast, as very few people on the west coast have ever heard of Liberty( now someone will say "i live on the west coast and have heard of liberty" thanks, thats obvious, i said only a few, but i didnt mean 2). All im trying to say is, Dont write Debate off as a bunch of geeks with no lives who dont deserve any sort of respect. People on Varsity team are often putting in 40 hours of work a week, ON TOP of classes and working. They have several 14 gallon rubbermaid containers filled with evidence that they basically have to memorize. They put in more work into one week of debate than most students put into an entire year of school. So anyone who thinks debate is dumb or just some dumb club, or any doubts about liberty debate, then you better be at campus march 9-12 when we host the NATIONAL tournament. Sit through one debate there, and i guarantee you you will have a completely new respect for debate.

You're a freshman so you probably don't know this yet but everyone here who has gone to Liberty within the past 10 years has been talked to death about the debate team. We know how it works, how much time you guys put into it, how good you are, how good your coach is, etc. It's not like you guys don't get any respect as an organization on campus.

Debate is in the other sport forum as you were told. Basically it should be in a non sport category. Oh I know you debaters train, it is called studying, memorizing, thinking. It will never compare to what an athlete go thru. I know an athlete can tear a muscle , never heard of a debater tearing one, unless they would call it a brain tear, which is medically unknown as far as I know. No a brain fart doesn't count. I wonder if most debaters got started in their young life being a smart aleck?

I don't even think classes have started for you yet and you're talking as if you've put 3 years into the program. Breathe. This school has respect for the debate team but let's not trivialize it by comparing it to college football. It is not in the same catagory. Debate is purely academic, football is not.

By the way I believe the US News and World report article has already been discussed a ton here. No need to conceal the identity.

I havent put 3 years into the program, however many people have and i think they should be respected more because people stereotype the debate team as a bunch of geeks, when really there are alot of cool people on the debate team, and i dont mean just cool to other debaters, but genuinly cool kids. And you try and do a debate and tell me it doesnt physically drain you. Even just listening to a debate or flowing a debate physically drains you.

no, the statement i made before was really more because i wasnt going to do the debate team because collegite debate consumes your life and really the only friends you have are the family of the debate team, and i didnt want to be friends with a bunch of geeks, but when i got there they were all alot cooler than i thought. Im going to be uploading a video of Glen(the top debater) sometime this weekend showing us how not to debate, its really funny, ill post the link here. And its not what you would think

Didn't you say you were a freshman? The returning students haven't come in yet. What "people at school" have you met that weren't freshmen themselves? As I think nearly everyone who has ever been a freshman can attest, freshmen (especially Liberty freshmen) haven't the faintest clue about anything. Don't take anything a freshman says seriously or personally, yourself included. We've all been there. This, too, shall pass. Now have a nice day.
