SuperJon wrote:Some of you people just don't get it. I'm sorry to play the "I know more than you" card but it's the truth. Listen to the people on here who have been around this thing longer than you and have heard all of this stuff countless times before.

Right now, there is nowhere to go. Let me say that again:

THERE

IS

NOWHERE

TO

GO

We're in the Big South. We are who we are. As Scorcho said, there are no pretty girls waiting for us to ask them to the dance. We have our girl, we might as well make the best of her.

In 1971, ECU was still in the SoCon. So was Richmond. As was William & Mary.

Schools like West Virginia (1968) and VT (1965) were in the Southern Conference not too many years before we started our school completely.

In 38 years, we have gone from not existing to the Big South. In those same years, schools that have been around for decades longer have moved up from the SoCon to the ACC and Big East. This stuff takes time. You can't build something overnight. Building a program, and moving up in the ladder of respect, takes decades, not recruiting classes. If and when a better opportunity comes along you better believe we will take it. However, there simply isn't an opportunity right now. There is nowhere to go. It's closing time at the bar, all the pretty girls have already found someone, and we're stuck going home alone or going home with the ugly chick in the corner. At least the ugly chick could lead to something promising. Going home alone leads to nothing.
Well dang... if we're stuck with her then we better get some kind of makeover... cause no one wants to wake up next an ugly chick.

Exactly. You just hit the nail on the head. While we need to actively pursue opportunities if any other prettier girls breaks up with her boyfriend, we've gotta take care of our own at the same time.

Mickey Gilley said it best that "all the girls get prettier at closing time". That rule could apply. :D

The idea that there is some end goal conference is asinine. Everyone remember how the Southwest Conference was the be all end all in college conferences? It didn't really help Rice, SMU, and Phillips. It should be noted that Phillips is not even a school anymore. Or maybe we should talk about the SIAA, Big Six.

Conferences form and dissolve all the time. It isn't a one way road to the top. Idaho and Montana were basically in the Pac-10 (really the Pacific Coast Conference. They aren't necessarily doing well now. The list goes on and on...I think you just have to hope for conference stability and to be fans of your team.

As far as Falwell is concerned...I'm sorry that you have the reputation of being a D-I Bob Jones university (actually you are the other Oral Roberts). Schools that get tied in political/ideological fights tend to lose out in the public eye. You guys chose that path, you'll have to deal with it.

No, I completely agree with us being the "other Oral Roberts" and I personally dont see anyone holding that against us simply b/c we are no longer on the screens of millions b/c Doc is no longer around to be on Larry King, CNN, Fox News and all the other shows he'd fight for our beliefs

We'll get the same scrutiny Oral Roberts gets whenever the time came for them but no more then that...we are no longer that polarizing place.

And for the record many of us would love to go through the rest of our lives moaning about our awful conference and how nobody will let us in if that meant that Doc was still around

keep in mind if a spot opens in the CAA, Radford would be in the middle of that battle also haha. One of the first things our president did when she got hired was hire a independent sports consultant to create a report that outlines the state of our athletic programs....one of the main questions she wanted answered was is moving to the CAA a viable option. Shes opened up the sports budget, and it has produced results quickly, i think upgrading conferences is definitey on her list of goals. Shes tight w/ timmy kaine and the folks in Richmond, and I think shes willing to do whatever she can to make it happen. but we arent close to that point yet.

good luck on the race to see who can leave the bsc fastest

i think it might be hard from your point of view as a fan or student or alum of liberty to accurately judge how you are viewed by others.......from my point of view, and others ive talked to, you ARE still a polarizing place, Jr. is still in the building.

Not arguing, poppa. But at the same time we are a much more attractive addition for leagues outside of the A-10 (those priests can't stand us) than Radford by a large margin.

So you want a Winthrop, Birmingham Southern, Presby BSC that you guys win in a round robin every year and lose as a 16 seed? :P The BSC is going to lose more good teams than it is going to gain...

How in the world do you come up with that? With the current conference alignments, I don't think the BSC has to worry about it's top programs going anywhere in the near future. None of it's best programs are ready to make a jump to a better conference and likely won't be ready for a while. SuperJon's comments about LU changing conferences apply to every school in the conference, not just LU.

All I'm saying is that if schools like LU and WU can't get invites to better conferences, there's no way Radford would be in the mix.

I was being a little sarcastic... just testing what lengths you would go to to defend the Big South... like Realist, who I know isn't always the most rational WU fan, but him saying we deserved to lose Curry after hating on the BSC, as if we were making fun of his mother/sister or something...

Well, I don't think you deserved to lose Curry, but I also thought Curry's comments were out of place.

For the conference, I like the teams and rivalries that are starting to develop. However, I'm sure that every school except maybe Presby and CSU (who are both just happy to be D1 right now) want out, but it's just not feasible. Mainly because none of the schools are ready for a move, but also partly because other conferences just don't want us.

The best chance for any team to make a move would be if the CAA and/or SoCon went through some kind of split. A split in one or both of those conferences would probably have implications in both the Big South and A-Sun, so depending on the teams involved, a move could be a lateral move at best.

And we will whine about whatever conference we would wind up in... nature of the beast.

Not until we are in the "Liberty Athletic Conference", which has a rule that we always make the playoffs and win player of the year, someone here will be upset...

Nah, we traded with Division III, we got Anderson, IN, and gave them Presby and Duke.
