The other thread was going well and was positive (brief though it was), and didn't need to be shut down, but that's not my job, so accepted with protests.

Anyway - we could all pray for one another, & it would help the site, IMO. Further, certain prayers that I mentioned in the VMI thread would take away some of the ill will & outspoken animosity that is always just a reference away.

Certain acts & judgments will be with us for a long, long time, but they have nothing whatsoever to do with Coach McKay or the team, and the best now is for everyone to move forward, and to pray for the best for one another.

Not exactly a radical concept.... & thanks to the guys who responded.

I don't think anyone truly wants to see RD fail. That's the thing here. No one says "RD's AAU girls team lost, guess he wasn't as good as the old coach, huh? What a bad decision."

As fans of a team, we don't like hearing people rejoice in our coaches failure! It's ridiculous. And like someone said, people acting so immaturely about the whole situation hurts the name of the former Coach. I would love to see him succeed. I honestly would. But what I don't love is people attacking the current administration over it. If you want respect, then give respect. If you want people to respect RD, then respect RMK and, get this, JEFF BARBER.

I think very few, if any, of us have a problem with RD himself. I know I don't, don't even know the guy. Never seen him before. However, I am more than willing to bring up facts of his failures at LU if people do the same about RMK. Just defending the coach I stand behind, because he's the one my school is paying to coach.

So I think we need two things to happen:

1. Not let these guys come on and spit hate about RMK and JB, and pity party over RD not being here anymore, and instead look to the future instead of stewing in the past.

2. If someone does bring up these same old stupid arguments, that we as current administration LU fans just let them go. There's nothing new under the sun that can be said about the whole situation. We all want RD to succeed. It's just tough to keep a positive outlook about him when people are constantly on here crying about the situation.

As cliche as it sounds we do need to look at it from more of a Christ-like perspective, like you said. There is a time for everything, right now is the time for RD to search for more career options, and for Ritchie to coach the Liberty Flames. We ALL need to accept that, and hope the best for both of them.

Agreed, and requesting prayer as well as hope. Thank you.

I don’t know why. The main people who keep bringing this up are CMII and inthebeginning. I don’t think they’ve ever made posts outside of the men’s hoops forum.

I 100% agree with everything you said. You know my stance on RD you know my families stance on RD.....I'm still unsure though why you want to mention his name on this board until the healing process has had longer. The healing process is far from over. The basketball team now has to experience failures and achievements until they (the ones that were anti-rd) can look back and appreciate the 1 of 2 titles our school has ever seen.

Think of it like this, RD cannot go to a basketball game still to this day which means the healing process hasnt been completed. I fully understand why he cannot go. He too has to experience failures and successes until he will be able to come back to the vines without hostility. If RD on that side of the coin does not want to associate himself with the school cant you imagine those that were so bitter towards him and their feelings right now when they read this stuff? It takes time but hopefully it will happen. RD will realize to be thankful for the only school at this level to give him an opportunity to be a head coach or heck even an assistant and the bitter koolade drinkers will be thankful for the years he's given and the title he brought.

And you were 100% correct that we need to move forward that's why I think it's best to separate the two for a while until a later time...until those successes happen...and this is coming from a friend in fact more then a friend.

Not gonna happen. Those guys are going to do what they want to. They don't respond to reason, force or me trying to frustrate them into leaving. A good reason to not ban them is because it's easier to know who they are then them coming back with a new name and having to figure it out.

This is key, but nobody here has the willpower to do it. All it takes is one comment, one guy who thinks he's funny and they VMI-like flurry begins. This is where an "ignore poster" button would go a long way.

Eventually I'll move this thread to the Chapel but this discussion has been very beneficial.

I was encouraged to know RD had some friends. I just finished reading Michael W Smith's book on making friends and I'm trying to turn over a few leafs myself. RD certainly rubbed some the wrong way so maybe there's hope for me too.

Then again, whining about a change in basketball coaches, two years after the fact, kinda gets me to wonder if they really are friends. They certainly aren't helping RD at all.

I had a fairly good relationship with him. He actually had connections at the local ESPN radio affiliate and could have helped me get a job there if I wanted. I enjoyed running into him around campus even after the change. I wasnt much happy with all the talk of the politics so I tuned out when he got into that but other than that I was glad to have gotten to know him over the years

This is a very positive thread. As one who used to bring up the arguments, I can appreciate what grm and others are trying to do and say. It does nobody any good to spew stuff either way. Let the past be the past, and lets all try to embrace the present and the future.

I can appreciate what Coach Dunton did for the program...and for the university.

Something I preached on once -- when facing adversity, look for what God is trying to teach you.

When the Flames were passed over (again) for the FCS playoffs, what was God trying to teach them (and us)?

When the basketball team surpassed all expectations and fell one game short of playing for the BSC championship, what was God trying to teach them (and us)?

I figure when adversity hits we're either being punished for something (not often) or God's trying to teach us something (very often). It applies to more serious things than sports, but it certainly applies to sports as well.

NOT trying to say that if God loves us, we'll always win. AM saying that God teaches valuable lessons in adversity and disappointment. We should look for that lesson.

phoenix, i agree w/ you somewhat on the point about as people facing adversity, but relating it to sports and being passed over for a playoff selection or losing in the semifinals of a basketball tournament? Not wanting to ruin the discussion thread, and i don't even have a clue who RD is. Anyway, hope the offseason treats the program well!

I think God does teach people things as a result of even these insignificant things. Even if it's that they put too much focus and emphasis on sports, there's a lesson God has for them.

More importantly, looking for what God wants us to learn puts things back into perspective, and keeps us from focusing on failings (our own and others').
