What a horrendous morning in Suburban St. Louis. Beyond the obvious casualties, anyone who was in the building will be traumatized for life. This is a reminder that churches need to develop better security plans. Thankfully more were lives weren't lost.

It also underscores the fact that it is not a long step from spiritual warfare to the physical.

It amazes me how many churches are comfortable holding services every week with absolutely no regard for security. I know many are in "The Lord will take me when it's my time." camp, but I'm not one of them. Just some basic planning with volunteers assigned to helping execute those plans could go a long way. Not only in situations like this but in dealing with fires, kidnappings from nurseries, etc.

This is such a tragedy and it's unfortunately becoming more common. There was a shooting in a Unitarian church just last year in Knoxville. (And no comments about the Unitarians, please.) I fear this is something we're going to see more of as time goes on.

Most all of these shootings (and they are becoming more frequent) occur in Baptist or Pentecostal/AG churches. This should hit close to home for most of us on here.

Our Senior Pastor and I just had a meeting about this type of scenario last night and what about escape plans and who to have near the doors and pulpit areas. We will be having a "business meeting" regarding some of these issues this week.

It would be hard to stop what went down in Maryville without metal detectors (and that is certainly out of the question). But churches do need to have plans in place. We pay armed constables to be all over our campus but you can't depend on that alone as we saw in Ft. Worth a year or so back.
