...Baker could be a wild card in tonight’s tournament semifinal matchup with VMI at Radford’s Dedmon Center, especially if VMI chooses to play the same sort of defense against Liberty it did in last week’s 109-72 rout.

UNCA Alum wrote:VMI itself was a little chippy in Tuesday’s quarterfinal blowout of Coastal Carolina in Lexington. Travis Holmes told the Roanoke Times he was surprised that, despite scoring nearly 20 points per game, he didn’t make the all-Big South first team. Chavis Holmes, the Big South’s leading scorer, was surprised at the choice of Radford’s Artsiom Parakhouski as the league’s player of the year. Both used those perceived snubs as internal motivation. Travis dropped 30 points on the Chanticleers, Chavis 21.I think it's funny that players think they can alter their psyche at their will. Are those 2 walking around all day with this "snub" burning in the front of their mind and they can't even concentrate on their classes or do they just flip it on like a switch before the game. "Oh yeah, they snubbed us! Now, because I'm mad, I'll play 78% better!" Now don't get me wrong, I think the whole bulletin board material/disrespect thing can give a team some passion, but I don't think those 2 needed motivation to play well. They play well anyway. Skip the drama.
“We told our team that we felt disrespected, so we came out with a big chip,” Chavis told the Times. “We’re going to continue playing like that throughout the tournament. If anybody is going to beat us, they’re going to have to bring their (A-plus) game because we’re bringing it every night.”
Who cares about VMI and their chances of winning... it's all about Chavis and Travis!!!
Seriously... how selfish can they get?
UNCA Alum wrote:Why does it matter which school would garner the most interest?uh. No- I think that's PRECISELY what they'd be doing (Though his name is Seth. ) and HAVE been doing, all season.
Unless ESPN needs to hype up the play-in game (and I think UNCA is the only one of the remaining four that would definitely go to the PIG), there's a 98% chance that our conference's run in the Big South Conference will be over after Round One. We won't have time to garner any interest. We'll just be one of 32 teams that went home early. ESPN and newspapers aren't going to be building up the VMI-Wake Forest matchup because they play at a frenetic pace or the Liberty-Louisville game b/c of Steph Curry.

Kenny & UNCA were plastered EVERYWHERE last year after the Carolina game- PTI, SportsCenter, you name it- he was featured from the local rags to the NY Times- even his you tube clips went up like 100,000 hits a day- it was all well & good.. Now correct me if I'm mistaken but what did it do for the conference?? Ohh yeah- we got that early game in November on ESPN as part of the 24 hours of basketball- that's it folks.. Unless a team has continual success like WU has not many folks are looking at the Big South for anything except a cute story from time to time.. I hate that, but it's true & they'll move on to the next story just as quick..PAmedic wrote:Exactly. If we all want the conference to get better, that kind of press doesn't hurt. Reid Augst had some "confident" quotes after the Winthrop game, I read. No problem here, he is a fine player who is capable of getting 25 any night.l

I/we can't control what they said five years ago, and it would seem to "third party" observers that the twins "didn't give" 100% before the CCU game. Not the best choice of words, I agree, but they (and everyone on all 8 squads) want bad to win three games this week. Plus, except for 2007, 1986 and 1989 (reaching conf. tourney final game), it's been awhile since VMI basketball was in this position. I attended the last VMI NCAA tourney game (vs. kentucky, 1977).kdinva wrote:But you'll have to forgive us UNCA guys like UNCA Alum for having a short leash on the Holmes' mouths- they've bad mouthed UNCA every year they've played back home from the HS days in the local paper- we tend to not care when they speak anymore as their antics have already spoke volumes about their attitudes- for the record I thought Travis WAS snubbed but that's been discussed in another thread that's hopefully dead...UNCA Alum wrote:Doesn't sound "selfish" to me. Maybe Duggar & Co. thought that they could intiminate the young Flames and make them quit. I guess we'll find out tonight.
