And to complete a quadrupole post, wow, I had no idea my half-joke would spawn such a heated argument. Obviously, I have problems with the Pentecostal doctrine, the main one which has already been brought up ("speaking in tongues"). I realize different churches likely have different beliefs, but the kids from Pentecostal churches back home always held to the doctrine that speaking in tongues was necessary for salvation, which I thought and still think is absolutely ridiculous. Sorry for creating such a huge fight, just my .$02.

I disagreed with Pentecostals right up until I met a few, and went to a Pentecostal church. After that, I felt kinda stupid for all the things I expected and thought about them. My best friend at LU was Pentecostal, and I learned quickly what I could joke with him about and what I couldn't (and shouldn't). Some of the stuff I've read on here probably crossed the line: like some Presbyterian making fun of a picture of Baptists fully immersing people in baptism or something.

And just to stir the pot a little more (even though I don't speak in tongues):

1 Corinthians 4

37 If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But all things should be done decently and in order.

Of course, verse 40 is the part that people tend to forget, on both sides of the debate. I've never spoken in tongues, and really don't plan on it, but I learned a long time ago not to decide on my own what God is going to do with me. He often decides to show you just who is in charge when you do that ...

That's cool. I think it's funny that there are a bunch of Baptists out there that hate LU for being "open" to different theological beliefs. It's proof that you just cant please everyone.

I agree. I can't tell you how often I have heard how secular Liberty has become. I knew MANY pentecostal people while I attended there. We made fun of each other all the time. Nobody, but the elitist preacher types, gave them a hard time in a mean way. Of course the Baptist theology is prominently taught, but I never felt like Pentecostals where the "step child" of the university. It was weird to see people on the side dancing around during campus services, but LU did allow them to do it as long as they were out of sight of most people (i.e. weren't a distraction) I remember a convo where Jerry was speaking and a student started talking in tongues out loud. He stopped his sermon and said, "Brother I love ya, but you are distracting us. You need to stop." I didn't see anything wrong with that.

That's Biblical, as far as the passage I quoted goes. I think a lot of the problems Paul writes to the Corinthian church about stem from people being a distraction or being disorderly in church, and it interfering with worship. In a setting where people expect it, and respect it, it's not a distraction; in a LU chapel service, it is.

Word a day calendar, huh? Well, you know what? Today's term is troglodyte. I know it's hard for you to understand any word that isn't written in textspeak or doesn't appear in conversation on The Hills so I'll even use it in a sentence.

"HMO is a troglodyte."

Consider yourself more better edumacated.

You've heard the word obtuse twice in your life before this? Did you take math in elementary/middle school? Did you take geometry in high school?

I know he was using a different definition, but you had to have heard that word a ton growing up in school.

It's amazing to me that you can't separate how I act on a message board and how I act in real life.

It's also amazing how if I would've taken a shot at you with your job you would've PMed me saying, "Bro, why you gotta take it personal bro? If you got a problem, PM me bro."

I think I've heard it probably 20+ times in my life. 99% of which comes from watching Shawshank Redemption on TNT. They play it like 50 times a year. Also, it was used incorrectly in this thread as I was not being obtuse. I was just disagreeing.

I didn't say you were "being obtuse", I said you were "being deliberately obtuse". There's a difference. The first indicates being thickheaded or imperceptive -- which I know you not to be -- while the second indicates not being thickheaded or imperceptive but pretending to be so for the sake of making a specious argument.

Aaaaaand HMO just went cross-eyed.

Not to change the subject of the word of the day.....but Penticostals have better music than Baptists. They have a plethora of great singers and bands.
