Scheduling some very weak teams the first two games last year did not help our program in the least. Honestly, I don't think we improved during that time-period and, more importantly, didn't gain any experience in competing in hard-fought football games. Is there some information that could change my perspective?

We are an FCS team(1-AA), meaning we need to schedule more opponents in our playing field.

Really? We're FCS (I-AA)? I hadn't heard.

I'm asking because I honestly don't know: Were those two teams the best teams we could schedule at home during those weeks?

We were originally supposed to play NC Central last year. They backed out at the last second to play Coastal instead. We had planned on playing North Greenville as an opening game and then play all Division I opponents the rest of the way out. Because NC Central backed out, we were forced to find another game. We had two options: play a Division I game in the middle of our season and have our bye in week 2 or play a DII game in the second week and have the bye in the middle of the season. We chose the latter option. Having the bye in week two and playing 11 straight games would not have been good.

We had a transitional I-AA back out on us late forcing us to add the second DII game. No, we didn't want to play two DIIs under any circumstances. We also had the first game in our series with JMU pushed back a year to this season at JMU's request. It was a perfect storm for a scheduling mess. Sadly the selection committee only saw us playing 2 DIIs and used it against us.

And truth be told, Glenville St was a better team than NC Central. They just happened to have the DII tag.
