They went 22-10 during his senior season and went to the NIT semifinals according to Wikipedia. That's a huge turnaround from the 3-23 record the year before Pete Maravich arrived.

You also have to remember that UK was still in the Rupp era at that time and the money was flowing freely in Lexington.

what's that have to do with pistol pete though? the money was flowing even more freely at UCLA during the Wooden era - just look up the name Sam Gilbert. Bill Walton even slipped up once on and said that one of the players during the Wooden era had to take a paycut when he went to the NBA because of Sam Gilbert, who was eventually banned from being able to do anything with ncaa athletics.

B/C only one team from a league went to the tourney back in those days...which meant NIT for LSU.

What makes not only this game, but Meeks' entire season even more remarkable is that he struggled with injuries (and confidence) all last year and averaged only about 8 ppg. I'm sure the people at UK knew he had more in him, but this has to be over and above anyone's wildest expectations.
