Just read that NBC racing analyst Benny Parsons has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. Reason behind the cancer was smoking back when he raced. Drivers smoking was a common sight back then as the obvious sponsor of the series was that of Winston

Welcome to the board.. Yeah I was just reading that on espn.com he said he hasn't smoked since 1978 that's along time, hope he is able to recover, I enjoy in the pits with Benny!!!! Fox coverage hands down is better though, I was wondering if he would go back to ESPN next year seeing that they have NASCAR again...

Well that is an interesting question....We all know the networks have at least one former racer in their booth for the knowledge. ABC/ESPN already has Rusty for next year, so who knows maybe they will do like they did back in the day when it was Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett and Benny. Also with TNT/NBC only having something like 8 races next year, Benny will have a LOT of time on his hands.

Actually I was reminded last week that in Rusty's contract Kenny his brother was telling me that HE IS NOT allowed to drive in a race during any part of his contract which last through 1212.....Rusty actaully has ZERO desire to get back in a car and he put that restriction in his contract... I noticed that Bob Jenkins had been doing some small racing stuff for speed channel which is owned by Fox over the last year or so, I would think that he would be the guy that would given the op to come back, I don't see Ned Jarrett coming back...

I totally agree with you.....I loved Jenkins when he did Nascar races. He wasnt too over the top, and said what needed to be said. Ned is too old to get back into the booth and enjoys retirement from what I have read. So going back to what we said, maybe benny could do both on NBC and ABC.

Now the question at hand....who will join Rusty on ESPN's coverage.....further more, who all will be the "Second String" team as ESPN has the entire Busch Season on their channels.

I would bring over bill weber from NBC to lead the broadcasts, and alan bestwick from NBC to possibly be the lead pit announcer, or maybe even give him a shot in the booth. of course ole cheeseburger benny would be a good pair with crusty rusty.

Bill Weber Staying witn TNT: With NASCAR's current TV deals expiring this season, networks with new deals kicking in next year are putting together on-air lineups. A piece of those puzzles settled early: TNT, airing six midseason NASCAR Nextel Cup races next year, will announce Monday that Bill Weber will be the host and call play-by-play on its races. Weber said he "talked briefly" to ABC/ESPN, which next year inherits NASCAR late-season coverage from the current joint venture of NBC and TNT that Weber currently hosts. But Weber says he always figured he'd stick with TNT. Turner Sports executive producer Jeff Behnke says Weber won't be allowed to appear on any other network's NASCAR coverage, given "he'll be the face of our coverage." But Behnke says its possible next year TNT will use announcers who also appear on ABC/ESPN or Fox, which next year will continue to cover early-season NASCAR races. ABC/ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys suggested Sunday that the Disney network probably will require exclusive use of its NASCAR announcers given that, in picking up all NASCAR Busch Series races and adding a daily show on car racing, ABC/ESPN will have "a year-round commitment to covering racing." I know they are staying put... but I am commenting on the fact that TNT might use other broadcasters for there coverage...I am curious to see if ESPN is throwing back money in the faces of the FOX guys seeing how much ESPN program wise is putting in NASCAR.... Also I am interested to see if ESPN comes knocking on a former News&Advance guy one in Marty Smith of NASCAR.com.... He is already doing some TV stuff and writes for the web-site, he brings that younger audience over and he could be a staple for period of time with ESPN

I had actually heard a rumor that Marty might be helping out with some Busch races for ESPN next year to see if he has that announcers touch. So it will be interesting to see if there will be more than 1 lineup for a race telecast next year.

a good win for the 48 and another win for hendrick! despite the sway bar problems the 24 still moved up one spot in the standings.
Johnson throws bricks at monkey on his back
After trials and tribulations at Indy, points leader finally wins
By Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press
August 6, 2006

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (AP) -- If Jimmie Johnson wants to finally capture his first Nextel Cup championship, winning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a step in the right direction.

Johnson pulled off a gritty win at the Brickyard on Sunday, battling back from an early tire problem to take the lead, only to see it evaporate when a late debris caution bunched up the field. It dropped him from first to eighth and forced him to slice his way to the front in the final 14 laps.

But he did it with ease and pulled away for his third major victory of the season. Johnson won the season-opening Daytona 500 -- the only event that trumps Indianapolis in prestige -- and also triumphed in NASCAR's All-Star race.

"Pucker up and get ready to kiss those bricks!'' Johnson said in Victory Lane.

Now he'll have to see if he can translate his Indy win into a championship.

The winner of the Brickyard automatically becomes the favorite to win the title, and five of the past eight went on to do it.

Johnson will now give it a try in his constant pursuit of an elusive first championship.

The perpetual points leader has never been able to put together a full season, and his swoon typically begins in Indy. He wrecked here and lost his points lead last season to race winner Tony Stewart, who parlayed the victory into his second championship while Johnson faded all the way back to fifth.

Matt Kenseth, who has been sitting in second behind Johnson the past nine weeks, finished second and is 107 points out of the lead. Kevin Harvick was third and Clint Bowyer, his rookie teammate at Richard Childress Racing, was fourth.

Mark Martin was fifth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. stole a sixth-place finish by not pitting on the final caution to salvage a horrible day and reclaim the 10th spot in the Chase for the championship standings.

Kyle Busch was seventh, followed by Stewart, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch.

Jeff Burton, who started from the pole and led a race-high 87 laps, finished a disappointing 12th after fading late.

Jeff Gordon, looking to race his way into the record books, never got the chance. He broke the sway bar on his Chevrolet just eight laps into the race and had to stop to have the part replaced. The repair work dropped him three laps off the pace, and even though he worked his way back onto the lead lap he wound up 16th.

The poor day prevented him from tying two distinguished marks -- joining Formula One superstar Michael Schumacher as the only five-time winners in Indy history, and the late Dale Earnhardt's mark of 76 Cup wins.

Gordon still had reason to celebrate when his teammate and protege pulled out the victory.

It was no easy feat, especially when Johnson's Chevrolet got a flat tire just 39 laps into the race. It forced him into the pits and dropped him all the way back to 38th.

But the Hendrick Motorsports team showed its strength by giving Johnson a car strong enough to slice his way to the front and into the lead with about 100 miles to go.

The win appeared to be locked up, until the yellow flag came out for debris on the track with 19 laps left. Johnson was the first car onto pit road, and crew chief Chad Knaus decided to give him four fresh tires.

Kenseth also took four, and beat Johnson off pit road. But they were both trumped by Denny Hamlin and Bowyer, who took only two tires to beat them off pit road.

They all had to settle in behind four cars that didn't pit at all -- including Earnhardt, who was running around 30th most of the day and was desperate to salvage a decent finish. The race restarted with 14 to go and Kenseth and Johnson were off, quickly working their way past Hamlin and Bowyer and a handful of others.

Then Johnson knocked off Kenseth, and had only Busch and Earnhardt in front of him. Earnhardt passed Busch to take a brief lead, but Johnson took it away moments later.

He was off from there, and no one had a chance to catch him. But he wouldn't count the win until he crossed the finish line, and even that moment was almost ruined. A three-car accident that collected Chase contenders Kasey Kahne and Greg Biffle on the final lap almost sent the race into overtime.

But NASCAR didn't call the caution until after Johnson crossed the line, giving him a win at the track that had vexed him so many times before.

Johnson came to Indy as the series leader the past two years, but finished 36th in 2004 and 38th last year to cough up his points lead.

"I'm just speechless,'' he said. "This track has given me so many problems.''

Unbelieveable how Johnson can come back from a flat left tire and win the race.....All I am saying is that it is his championship to lose. Around this time last year, Smoke was making his charge to win his title. This year is different because Johnson has time and time again come back from bud luck during races.

Before I forget......I was listening to the race on the radio on the way back from the beach and good ol' BOB JENKINS was helping out with the broadcast. I dont know if he does this every year for the Indy race, or if he is getting back to form for next year.

He was one of the reasons why I loved Nascar on ESPN so much......One of the most memorable calls I remember him making was when Earnhardt spun out Labonte at Bristol in 99' on the final lap for the win. Good times will be back next year.

With the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard being moved up one week next year to the last weekend in July to accommodate ESPN's return to the sport, Pocono has moved it's second race back to the first weekend of August.
