Chris Summers has given a verbal commitment to Coach Bobby Petrino and the Cardinals
So how did we get him?

2007--Petrino left for the Falcons after that season.

After getting dumped by UL, it looked like he took a few visits to the U. in Miami. Interesting story on how he got "left out" of the recruiting process. It seems that he really didn't get a lot of play until UL swooped in and offered him.

Maybe someone with a little more insight can explain more--but I find it odd that a kid who was being offered, or at least looked at, at high major schools didn't get an offer from a lower-tier FBS school.

Per Sam Steel in pregame for tonights Anderson game, Rocco said "if I didn't say yes to Chris joining the basketball team, he'd just be playing down at LaHay every night anyway". She said the guys on the team love him and he brings a lot of energy.

He's on a football scholarship. For all intents and purpose he's a basketball walk-on.

sweet, that is the best of both worlds, can we pick up another athletic kid off the football team or two to fill out our roster haha. I like this move a lot,

How did he look in the couple minutes he was in tonight? I realize it's a small sample and he is rusty, but sometimes you can simply tell if a guy has "it" or doesnt.

from what i saw he will be a solid guy off the bench...very quick

having more guys off the bench is a very good thing, especially at this point with our injuries

He played very well and did not look "out-of-shape". I think he had 7pts and 4 rebs.

Asa was an all-conference basketball player in high school.

Rashad can shoot it pretty well too.

And I don't think he'd be too scared to go for a rebound.

Rashad is a tremendous athlete and now an All-American. But no one would ever confuse him with being a good basketball player if you've seen him play.

I've seen Rashad rip the entry door in to Dorm 2 a few years ago. I don't think I'd be in a real hurry to try and box him out.

I think Summers made every shot he took in the paint--extremely quick, agile, and athletic. Great post moves and plays with his back to the basket. He will see much more playing time than Austin Smith. I can't even tell you how excited I was at Summers' game tonight: his quickness in the paint reminded me a lot of David Dees.

On the post-game interview, McKay was so grateful for Coach Rocco letting Summers play basketball, especially since he will miss several weeks of spring football practice and work in the weight room.

I don't think he'll miss any of spring football practice. He'll just miss the off-season workouts.

Im interested to see how long this lasts....it really depends on what sport he wants to focus on. From what I hear Basketball is his first love and what he wanted to play out of High School but our football coach's did a great job in getting him to see the vision of the importance of a 6'4" receiver rather then a 6'4" forward.

I say Im interesting to see how long this lasts b/c he's valuable property now....he's only going to get more valuable next year to football....many consider him a program changing type athlete

Great insight, HMO.

Here's what Lang (and McKay) had to say about Summers (and Rocco) after the game:
And newcomer Chris Summers, on loan from Danny Rocco’s two-time Big South champion football team, scored seven points in his debut, hitting 3 of 4 field goals and adding a rebound, a steal and an assist.

McKay approached Rocco about allowing the 6-5 Summers to play basketball, and Rocco enthusiastically gave his blessing.

“He’s a tremendous kid, and he added a lot of value to us tonight,” McKay said. “Coach Rocco, I love him to death, and I already had a ton of respect for him, but that’s as team oriented as you can get, to give up one of your better players to play basketball and miss some spring football. Give him an assist tonight.”
