Don't write off Peele and Winthrop basketball team just yet

The Winthrop basketball bandwagon is encountering some tough road right now.

The Eagles are 1-7, their worst start since the 1997-1998 season, which is also the last season they started 0-2 in the Big South Conference.

The Eagles, with no more conference games until the first of January, are starting in a two-game hole, with VMI and Presbyterian off to 2-0 starts. Charleston Southern is 1-0.

Here is where the WEF's board comesinto the story ...

Still, Eagles fans aren't accustomed to looking up at the rest of the league. The hardcore fans love going on winthropfans.com and proclaiming how good the program is and just how knowledgeable they are about their team.

Eagles fans don't want excuses. They want "Ws," and if coach Randy Peele can't provide them, then by gosh, let's move on. And some "loyal" fans believe there are those in the athletics department who are already counting the days until Peele's gone or at least helping to push things in that direction.

WU will be fine, simply put, being such a power makes any bump in the road much more dramatic than it needs to be. When we win the next 8 out of 10 conference championships we'll look back and laugh. Just as we did last year when we won it all and he wrote the same article earlier in the year.

Definitely. We can recruit on a level much higher than what we have been in the past. The program will only continue to get better with the much better resources we have now.

In all honesty, we need to start thinking about looking for a better conference than playing in this one, that only hinders our development.

Peele isnt taking you to that level...I'm with you in thinking you can recruit higher...I just dont see him being the man for the job 3 years from now...but time will tell

Winthrop may be looking at a 20 loss season this year. Combining 20 losses along with WU's current recruiting difficulties is only going to add to the agita epidemic in Rock Hill.

Well, he's obviously living in the past. Every now and then he hallucinates back into the Marshall era and projects this into the present. Apparently, he hasn't fully come to terms with the fact that the guy evaluating talent over there at Winthrop isn't the guy with the slick greasy hair.

You guys are certainly shortsighted. Championships aren't won in December, especially not by a team that has played 2 home games so far. WU has the best talent in the league and adds post players no one else can get in the league next year. They will struggle some this year with Beuchert being out but can certainly win it all, but the program is light years ahead of what is the norm in the league.

As for conferences, WU is better candidate than CCU and LU. CCU has too much crime and poor academics to move anywhere, LU has too much baggage, and no signature sport where they can add value.

I could see the Eagles moving into a situation where a league was looking for a non-football member to balance out their hoops schedules.

Realest....I dont want you to think it's ALL of LU against you...I like to think of myself as someone who keeps it "real" if you will. But the fact that you think WU is head and shoulders above all the other teams a better candidate then anyone else makes me think you are to deep in the forest. You guys had a GREAT run in basketball...a dynasty if you will, but like Sly said you dont have football...which kills you and you're up and down in every other sport to much to be considered the best.

After you weigh all of the sports it's not head and shoulders...it's very close

Or we could just look at the SAS cup which is really the only way of measurement we have currently (BSC version of the BCS)

You'd be surprised, our board has been referenced in the Lynchburg fishwrap on building items on campus and our own LUConn scooped the city on some social injustices of the past in Lynchburg that were brought to light on this board.

P.S. I'm all for an all-sports conference if a 1-7 team thinks their demographics are appealing to other conferences.
