Somewhat of a "breakout" game for Austin Smith with 7 points in his 12 minutes. Unfortunately 3 more fouls as well. He needs to get a handle on the fouling problem if he is going to be a contributor in conference play. BSC refs are notorious for singling out certain players (usually big white guys) and calling "reputation" fouls which seem to have little correlation to whether there is actual contact or not on the court. Adam Hopkins and Russell Monroe were favorite whipping boys, and there was even a period when Peter Aluma had a hard time staying in games because they called fouls on him while the guys guarding him regularly got away with assault and battery.

Two of his fouls were when he was trying to draw a charge and had bad positioning.

I dunno. I think he will be fine. He is not playing enough minutes for us to worry about him getting into foul trouble. He gives us some physical play off the bench. I like the fact that we can bring a big guy in who can get physical.

Fouling is a problem, even in limited minutes. They have these things called "free throws" which the other team gets to shoot from only 15 feet away with noone guarding them, and they are worth 1 point each.

really? wow! That seems like it should be automatic points for the person. I wonder if people ever choke and miss one of those "free throw" shots that you speak of? I heard something about Memphis losing the national championship last year because of missing these "free throw" shots.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think if a guy has been scoring in the paint and Austin gets in there and plays some physical D and maybe fouls him a couple of times, it makes him go make his free throws and puts the pressure on him there. I think having an enforcer type of player come in can help us. But you are right because it can hurt us if he gives up bad fouls. We just have to get him to learn how to foul controllably.

It's basketball, not hockey.

If what you are saying were true, it could be any scrub that you put in there to foul (think Don Cheney and his "designated goon"). Size and talent not required. Possibly an academic "ringer" retained for his GPA? Maybe even Tyler Baker, with his boot on. Fouls are bad.

I think the problem comes in the fact that he fouls so quickly and will get a reputation for it. So, once he develops and starts playing more minutes, refs will be more apt to call a touch foul on him because of his reputation. If you look at it in the present, it doesn't look like that big of a deal. If you look at it with an eye to the future, you can see where it can be a problem.

BINGO! My thoughts exactly, and there are definately past examples to point to. Poor Adam Hopkins. He wasn't really that good, but he was 6'10" about 240, and should have been able to do some damage in the BSC. He never had a chance. He got a reputation for fouling, and he couldn't go near his man without being called. He lost all confidence, and IMHO it ultimately ruined his career.

Not that it matters for our game, but this thread is about the Classic...

Coker is keeping it close with SCSU 25-26 late in the first half.

FTN is SUPPOSED to be broadcasting the game...at least according to my DirecTv program guide (on 13-2). Not happening.

They are only broadcasting the games LU is in. Livetracks on the SID site has it.

i think the reason that is, is it could have gone either way if LU had lost then they would've aired it at 6, but since they won its airing at 8.

And the amount of money Scar is contracted for...any extra games in a economy like this will cause FTN to shut down :D

If anybody can see the game and has an internet connection, I expect regular post updates. It's a good excuse for you to pad your post count and it keeps those of us who are away without audio in the loop.
