i find that quote a little bit funny. reading your rundown of what the flames will have in 09 up above, i read a bunch of guys who should step in and fill roles. or talent "waiting in the wings" as you put it. how can you be so sure of that? to assume that some guy who didn't play qb (for example) all year is just gonna step in and lead the team is pretty presumptuous. and in what's becoming a pretty pass happy league, the fact that your entire defensive backfield has graduated could be a pretty big problem.

i don't presume to know how the conference will shake out next year, but i do know that few seniors that ccu loses either didn't play much to begin with, or were injured for the 2nd half of the year and had been replaced. coastal obviously had talent, as they showed against the flames....they just have some other issues that need to be resolved.

Because those guys showed they could compete against the starters in this conference. BJ Hayes vs Coastal andLarry Claiborne against Charleston Southern are the two that come to mind first. Most of the guys stepping into significant roles have seen plenty of time the past two years, moreso than most "reserves" on other teams.

Maine didn't do anything. We will never get a chance to prove that the 2008 Flames were a better/more deserving team than the 2008 Bears. But it's nothing the Bears did to deserve our hatred.

CAA hatred, however, is openly accepted and encouraged. We need to schedule a CAA team to replace Iona. People say that if we played Towson 10 times, that Towson would win 9. I would love to get a series started to test that statistic.

WEll we nearly knocked them off two years ago so Id love to get another crack at them. I think at this point SHSU, Prairie View, McNeese might be a nice step up for the SOS. Jacksonville would be good too (defending champs of the Pioneer League) and even Dayton just so all those Dayton posters on AGS can shut up for a little while.

Seriously though, we'd probably throw a wad of cash at one of the Bowden boys.

Per the schedule discussion, I spoke to Paul Rutigliano after the game Saturday and he said he is looking for a counter that is a win in Iona's spot. So don't expect a great FCS team there. But expect an FCS team there.

Who had a bye on October 3? OR who had Iona on October 10? We should be calling whoever had Iona and has one of those two dates free -- that seems like the quickest fix.

Just looked, and couldn't find an Iona football schedule for next season on line. I can't search AGS though -- they won't let me register. Something about a duplicate account, and thinking I'm a spammer.

I think that is a default setting. I had to keep replying to the admin and re-registering. The registration was successful after the 3rd or 4th time.

Old Dominion has a bye that day. I don't think they're a counter in '09 though.

Problem is, I don't know if ODU would count as a Division I win (if we win), because its their first year. They may (or may not, I'm just guessing) have a provisional status.

Plus, if ODU gives up its bye week, they'd be forced to play like 10 games in a row.

Because they are a good, respectable team, and we need to add them instead of some DII team. They are a playoff team that would look very good on our schedule.

Cal Poly would be a fun matchup. They would be a little down without Dally and Barden but I think we'd draw pretty well if that were to be pulled off

October 10 open dates:

Cal Poly
LU
North Carolina Central
South Dakota
Stony Brook

So Cal Poly would make us flexible on dates. My only concern would be travel expenses; will either team be able to afford the trip?

Wait -- has anyone else noticed that Cal Poly has "bye weeks" from September 12-October 10 and on October 21, and Liberty seems to have an extra bye on October 17?

I am thinking that, if those open dates are correct, that Sam Houston, McNeese, and Cal Poly would be our main options.
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
