So Chris...what is your GUT telling you?
To lose some weight.
Everyone was CONVINCED heading into this week that W&M's only chance to make the field was to beat Richmond. Now all of a sudden, the Tribe are a better than 50-50 shot? I just don't see it.
They're looking a the precedent set last year when UNH got in at 7-4. Problem was there was a serious lack of teams for those last two spots. The fact that Liberty, with six DI wins, was even in the discussion, was surprising. I really don't think the Flames got that deep of a look.
Now you've got a team that has won two straight conference titles in unbeaten fashion and slipped once at Presbyterian. It's an awful loss, yes. But the rest of Liberty's resume is attractive. The Flames didn't just beat Elon here today, they crushed Elon. They made a statement to the committee that they were ready to beat a high-level team that entered the game as a playoff lock had it won.
AGS people can't have it both ways. They can't say Elon is going to win by four touchdowns all week and then call a win over Elon meaningless after the Flames pull off the victory.
I think the Coastal Carolina model is going to be used tomorrow. The Chants went 9-2 and had a signature win over Furman and bad losses to Elon (5-6) and Georgia Southern (3-8 ). Liberty went 10-2 with one bad loss (Presbyterian 4-8 ) and a signature win over an eight-win Elon team. Coastal was a two-time league champion (co-champion one year). Liberty is a two-time league champion. The Big South's GPI is better than that of a couple of auto-bid conferences. If you're putting together a field of the 16 most deserving teams, do you exclude a 10-2 (8-2 really) conference champion in favor of a third-place team from the Ohio Valley or the fifth-place team from the CAA? That's the question.
My gut says Liberty's in. We'll see if I'm right tomorrow.
