How many were there? Were they rowdy? Where were they sitting? Any confrontation with our LUnatics?

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Matt Bevins made good on all four of his field goal attempts and Rashad Jennings rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown as No. 20 Liberty defeated No. 12 Elon 26-3 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Williams Stadium.

The Flames (10-2) struck first when Bevins booted a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter. Liberty extended its lead to 10-0 when Dominic Bolden returned a punt 74 yards in the second period. Andrew Wilcox converted a 40-yard field goal to put the Phoenix (8-4) on the scoreboard in the second quarter. With that kick, Wilcox became the first Southern Conference place kicker to make a field goal in 12 games in a season.

We are getting some love (and respect) from the Elon message board:
elongradinri: Let me also add congrats to the Flames. They played the game they needed to and were the better team today. Best of luck tomorrow on the selection show....

Elonfan04: I am disappointed because we have an All-American receiver who has the all time record for receiving yards in the SoCon and I barely heard his name called today. Cudos to the LU defense if they took him out of the game.

With the victory, the Flames raise their record to 10-2, besting the 1979 (9-1-1) and 1997 (9-2) squad who reached the nine-win mark. Elon, who suffered their third loss in their last four games, finishes its regular-season schedule with an 8-4 record.

I love this stat from Wetmore's write-up:
Elon was held well under its season average of 400.0 yards, which ranked No. 25 nationally, as Liberty’s stout defensive effort held the Phoenix to 267 yards.

a great game by our guys and a very inspired effort. as coach rocco said the last two weeks we have played championship defense. kent hicks played well today against terrell hudgins...(was hudgins hurt??). the crowd though small was excellent! i am so proud to be a flames fan, and i hope the committee puts us in the field.

Hudgins was visibly hurt pretty bad. He could barely walk or run yet he was in the game nearly every play.

Yeah, it was a gutsy effort by him, but you have to wonder if they would have been better off with a healthy receiver in the game. It's gotta be hard for a coach to say no to a Senior star when he says he can go. That might be one where the player should take himself out for the good of the team.

He's just a junior, believe it or not. And Riddle was just a sophomore. They'll be back strong again next fall.

Not only was he visibly hurt, and stayed in almost every play but he was telling the coaches to keep him in. calling guys off so he could stay in and help out his team. I have a ton of respect for that kid and hope to see him play on sundays some day.

I look at it differently. As well intentioned as he may have been, what he did was actually selfish. He was extremely limited in his mobility, and was probably hurting his team more than helping.

He's one of, if not the best FCS receivers in the country. Him on one leg is exponentially better than they're 5th-6th WR.

I couldn't agree more SJ. The gallery is a terrific addition to the game reports. Our SIDs have really stepped up their game big time.

i'm with you, he was selfish. and a total and complete jerk. during warmups he took every opportunity to talk trash to kent hicks but kent acted with class and did not respond. he kept holding up 3 fingers? was that in reference to last year's game or something? i suppose that's what some guys do to get in the other guy's head, or whatever, but it was completely classless. arrogant. stupid. sj said he behaved well during the game, so good for him.

I know he's good SJ, and he did catch 7 passes, but only for 50 yards. He was just going down a few yards and "posting up" using his size, but couldn't gain any YAC because of his injury. Of course I don't know how good (or bad) their reserve receivers are, so I really wouldn't know if they could have done better. I guess what I really mean to say is that things aren't always what they appear. A player who stays in the game with an injury is not necessarily helping his team.

Hicks and Hudgins were on each other all game. If you're gonna say something about Hudgins, you have to rag Hicks as well, and I didn't have a problem with either one of them.

What you may have failed to see was in the fourth quarter, when the game was out of hand on a kickoff, one of Elon's players was all over Eugene Rogers after the play. Hudgins came in, threw the Elon player off of him, and helped pick Gene off the ground.

Hudgins handled everything we gave him with class. He wasn't cussing at us like their other players. He wasn't saying anything rude or crude to us. He laughed when we did something funny but his only responses were things that were funny and clean.

Terrell Hudgins is the best offensive player we saw the entire year.

Just like Jerome Simpson and Taj, some guys just know how to have fun out there and can handle being an athlete in front of opposing fans.

I really enjoyed today. The band played awesome, and team played awesome...I ran into I believe dcbailey after the game which was a pleasant surprise as well. I was kinda tearing up after we got back to fine arts because it was my last home game. I'll be spending some time next year with the LUnatics and Im lookin forward to it. How many days til the home opener for 09?

I'm not saying Hudgins is not a teriffic player. I think he has proven that for 3 years. I'm not saying he is not a classy guy. I am saying that what I saw was an injured player who's effectiveness was very limited today. I don't buy the "he's better on one leg" bit. It might be true for a great offensive lineman, but not a receiver. If it is true that he refused to come out of the game when the coach sent in subs, then I would say I lose some respect for their coach for not going out there and pulling him off the field himself.

I agree with all but this. You guys can laugh but Seymor, Glenville State's RB was the best offensive player we saw all year. I believe he transfered from Central Michigan and ran like a Squirrel running through traffic and leads DII in total yards(2282  )Yards per game (207.5) and is second in the nation in all purpose yards this year (with over 4700 yards!) I know he competes in DII but he lit us up when we played him.
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
