The 12 game argument is stupid. We've played 11 games. We won nine of them. It's the same as in 97. Add in a conference championship which we didn't have back then and it's the best season in school history. In 97, there were three Division II wins that year which actually makes what I said earlier untrue about most Division I wins. You say Youngstown is a cupcake, but they were ranked when we played them. That goes down as a win over a ranked opponent. It wasn't til after our game that their season completely fell apart.

Edited to add:

I went through and looked up the records of the teams we played in 97. We played 11 games. Of those 11 games, three were sub-Division I and one was a first year I-AA school. The combined records of Division I schools was 46-42.

this is without a doubt the best team in LU history...and if we pull off win against Elon next week that really should solidify that...

3-0 vs DII

or

2-1 vs DII and transitional teams

Besides - we beat quality teams then. 2-2 vs Top 25 finishing teams (1 loss in OT) in 97

You can't do that. You're using the transitional thing for your advantage.

97: 3-0 vs Division II. 6-2 vs Division I.
08: 2-0 vs Division II. 7-2 vs Division I.

Transitional or not, Presby is a Division I win or loss for teams this year.

I didn't attend LU, but I've gotta agree that you're right about that, SJ. I've read through the Liberty Way and it's pretty strict. I couldn't imagine anyone abiding by every single one of those rules

Guys, there was a time when people came to JMU games to see the Marching Band. In fact, BEFORE 2004 (the year of the championship), large crowds at JMU showed up only for the big games, if that. I understand your frustration, but ya'll just gotta be patient. One of the big ways that you can affect student participation is through promotion. I assume ya'll have some sort of Student Fan Club, as here we have the Student Duke Club. As an SDC Executive, I see firsthand how much effort goes into promoting the various things we do to encourage people to come out to games, especially basketball games, as we have not been putting on good performances in recent years. Another way you can affect students is by education. I see that most of your students seem to be ignorant about the FCS. Perhaps you should provide information or something to them about the division, who's in it, the various conferences and other in-state teams like JMU, Richmond, etc. Just keep the faith.

As for extra-curricular activities regarding the football team, it happens everywhere. Even at my old Christian HS, when I played I always knew that after the game something bad was going down. You've just gotta have outstanding character in the leadership positions and hope for the best. I feel like JMU has this in Rodney Landers, Scotty McGee, and Eugene Holloman, all strong convicted Christians.

i don't think enough emphasis is being given to the weather. i'd say that is the reason most of the kids left yesterday. most of our fans are not dedicated, and when it is a blow out and cold as an eskimo's testes, its hard to get people to stay. say what you want about wearing a coat, blah blah people just don't want to be cold to watch a blow out when they can go inside and so something. they don't love football, it is just a social activity for most people. as long as they look at it that way, it will be hard to keep faithful attendance

Where did you go? You were gone before halftime and I didn't see you at all the entire second half. It was the same for homecoming.

I think "witch's mammaries" is the analogy you are looking for.

Well, you could always do what we did back in the day. Have games at City Stadium and require students to ride buses there. The buses didn't leave until the end of the game, so everyone had to stay ;)

I get tired of people complaining about bad weather. I've marched half-time shows (in full, bulky, soaking wet uniform) in near blizzard conditions. I've seen trumpet players have their lips freeze to their mouthpieces, and I've marched on fields so muddy that I almost lost my shoes. Bad weather is football weather, far as I'm concerned. That said, I can almost guarantee that the low turnout was caused by the weather. Homecoming was the same way. Two drops of rain will keep fifteen Baptists away from church on Sunday, why should football be any different?

like i said, it is a social activity for the majority of students. they aren't there to watch football, they are there to hang out with friends. if that is their only reason, why stay when they can go in the tilley center where its warm at?

and congrats for marching in bad weather, that sounds like a rough time. did you walk uphill 2 school and back for 25 years too? in the snow and ice?

I think the best record by percentage was back in 1979. I think they went 9-1-1. I think we were NAIA back then and lost to ....Gardner-Webb. I think they had a big win over the University of Dayton.

The band was in jackets the whole game because it was so cold (The color guard was in matching heavy jackets for pregame...I wont put my thoughts on that here)

Ive gone to every home game and stayed the whole time with the exception of homecoming because my dad needed to be at the baseball field for the alumni game and that was more important to me that day.

But I do my best to get everyone i stay with in the game and there for the whole time, recently Ive gotten several to stay by telling them I will help them get all the left cups and whatnot after the game for their dishes, and its worked. Last night I had three stay the whole time to get this and all the left over thundersticks. But its pretty sad that thats the only reason they stay. Last night was not that cold, I dont see what everyones problem was.

also, It was pretty sad that the Baptist side had more in it than the students last night. If only it was like that every game, with a full student side.

Ill be there on Saturday, looking forward to it.

When I was a student a LU no one came to the games and I mean no one. I remember going to a few games and there may have been 1000 people there. Comming back to watch games the past few year I am excited to see so many students there getting into the game. I hope to see more and more students coming to the games but more importantly I would like to see more Alumni getting to the games. This is how you get large attendance numbers. You have to have some pride in your school and support it. This crap about what the football players are doing that is not in the Liberty Way, you need to get over it. I am sure that not all 100 football players are guilty of this. Yes, no one is perfect but you as a Liberty student/alumni need to remember what Jerry would say "love the sinner hate the sin".
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
