The parking situation is scaring me. Somebody on the Applebee's Show suggested that we park at K-Mart and take the VMI bus to the game. Anybody know where K-Mart is in Lexington?

They also said that our Flames Club "spider tent" is not allowed on the VMI campus because of VP Cheney's visit, so it will have to moved to Washington & Lee's campus which is only "2 blocks" from VMI. If that is true, does anyone know if LU fans are being allowed to park on W&L's campus?

I’ve actually been kinda leery about this as well. I’m not sure what I will do.

There is no K Mart in Lexington. I lived there for a year. The best place to park is when you come into Lexington is to make a Left at the Light by the McDonald's and Hardees, park in the lot near the Food Lion. They run shuttles to the college and back.

I'm honestly considering packing my bicycle and riding it to the stadium once I get into Lexington.

The reference to K-Mart might refers to the K-Mart that USED to be in Lexington, and it is the same center as the Food Lion that flamerbob mentioned; the store closed quite a while ago. As you come into Lexington on US 60, it is the first shopping center on the left just before you cross under US 11. It actually wouldn't be a bad walk or ride (very scenic, at the least) to the stadium, if you get a map and negotiate the back roads.

This is a better VMI team, explosive on offense and Rocco says sounder on defense. Danny Rocco, Liberty Flames (web) Head Coach - "We probably got VMI's worst shot last year as it turned out and they probably took our best shot last year. So it certainly won't play out that way, it never does, especially when you flip the home-and-home. So going up there on the road, playing up at VMI, will change that atmosphere a little bit."

Liberty pitched two shutouts in October, but not even Flames coach Danny Rocco was sold on his defense.

Asked about the unit on the Big South weekly teleconference last Tuesday, Rocco called the defense “average at best,” this season. And it’s easy to understand why. Sure, the Flames were coming off their second shutout in three weeks. But the unit as a whole had been inconsistent, as evidenced by shaky efforts against Coastal Carolina and Lafayette.

The trend continued last Saturday against Presbyterian, another in a line of teams that has used the short pass to exploit weaknesses in the Flames’ 3-4, Cover-2 scheme.

The Liberty Flames certainly did not help their playoff cause with a shocking 31-28 loss to Presbyterian, which is not even at a full scholarship allotment.

Liberty fell to No. 25 in The Sports Network Poll and Flames coach Danny Rocco acknowledged the loss "affects" their playoff hopes, but added, "I don't think by any stretch of the imagination it eliminated us.

"They matched our scores ... they did a few things unique, unconventionally."

From Chris in his Flames Notes ...
NewsAdvance wrote:Injury report

Liberty cornerback Pat Calvary is doubtful for Saturday’s game at VMI, LU coach Danny Rocco said.

Calvary sprained his right ankle in the third quarter at Presbyterian and didn’t practice Monday or Tuesday. If he can’t go, either Kajuan Lee or Chuck Duffey, who has played much of this season at safety, will start in his place.

Duffey does have experience at corner. He started in place of cornerback Kent Hicks last year at Charleston Southern and intercepted a pass.

Cornerback Tim Torrence, who hurt his neck and head at Presbyterian, is questionable for Saturday’s game. Rocco said tailback Zach Terrell, who has missed the last four games with a sprained MCL in his left knee, will play Saturday at VMI.
“I felt Zach could have played last week, but I don’t know if he was anywhere beyond 80 percent last week,” Rocco said. “He looked pretty good (Tuesday) and looked good (Monday) night. We’ll certainly play Zach this week. How much will depend upon the flow of the game and what kind of success we’re having on offense.”

Doesn't throw much, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them throw in a new wrinkle or two this week. My best bet would be for the triple option of fullback-pitchman-QB keep to get a pass option added. When the CB comes up on the pitch man the QB pulls up and tosses it to the flat. I really think he'll get the option to throw this week even though in past weeks VMI has been content to live and die by the option.

I was broadcasting for EC Glass when they played Patrick Henry High School out of Roanoke a couple weeks ago. They ran a very option heavy offense (almost exclusively run) and they threw in a very interesting play where there were two handoffs and any one of three guys had the ball at any given time. I would not be surprised if VMI tossed in a play or two like that this week. That would force LU to be extremely gap sound and very sound in their edge contain as well.

If they are running the triple option with Maypray at QB, they probably will feature him by loading the defender responsible for taking him. The 3-4 cover 2 defense usually assigns the following option responsibilities. The nose will be double teamed. If he is single blocked by the center, we are in trouble. The d tackle/end will be the dive key and responsible for the fullback. He must drive the off tackle down and knock him off course on his way to the playside lb. The play side lb then is responsible for the qb and becomes the pitch key, forcing a pitch. The outside lb goes directly to the pitch back. The safety on that side comes up hard in run support running to qb to pitch. The corner locks up on the split end, maintaining outside leverage on the play. The backside safety rolls over the top to cover the play side slot if he runs the seam. Now, here is where a load block comes in. When they see how we are defending the play and who is taking the qb, they will load the play side slot through the outside hip of the tackle to the play side lb who is taking the qb, in hopes of springing Maypray. Other things they can do, is go unbalanced to throw off our assignments, counter option, run midline, fb trap, toss sweep (which may happen more because of our vulnerability vs the bubble at Presby) and play action. They may also run loop scheme which has all the o linemen zone scheming the front which gives them the advantage of an extra blocker on the front side. Just giving us some things to look for Sat.

Based on health issues, if Hughes is in at QB you have to doubt they'd want him taking licks running the option. Similar to us when we bring in Mike at QB, they should be somewhat telegraphing what we are in for when they line up. Stopping it is a whole other issue.

Coach Wach ran this offense when he was OC at Rice before coming to LU. So I am sure the scout team knows the nuances for practice this week.

Medic, I am still heart sick over Presby. I was there, and felt afterwards it was best to keep my mouth shut. Paul Brown said "when you win, say little, when you lose, say nothing." I have always known that losing hurts worse than winning feels good. This is a marathon season, and lets pick ourselves back up, roll up our sleaves, and get after a dangerous VMI squad.
Nuff said.

Most of this board is wondering who Paul Brown is. But as a Cincy native, I loved the quote and application to our current situation.

I agree with MM. I was there too and I said nothing because I was speechless. Grief is silent.

I recall warning that we were looking past the next three weeks opponents because all the chatter was about Elon. NOW all the chatter is "if" we even have a chance for the playoffs. What we need to do is talk about is VMI. MM has given a good assessment for Saturday. Let's talk football.

I think we will do better against the option offense attack rather than the short passing game like presby had...

The last two years it's been 73-34 and 38-32, and the defenses involved aren't great and the offenses involved are pretty good, so it's conceivable. I'm not sure it'll be that high scoring, but I could easily see a 48-42 sort of game with a ton of big plays on both sides.

The Big South title could actually be decided Saturday. If Liberty beats VMI and Coastal beats Gardner-Webb, the Flames will repeat as league champions.

It appears your intel was on the mark.
