There were six fans for LU at the match, and we had almost as many as G-W did. GW played lights out in set 1. They killed us in the middle and the outsides had their way with us, too. Our blocking timing was just a little off and we didn't put a lot of offensive pressure on them to get them out of rhythm. In the second set, they looked sluggish and tentative, and we were rocking. We got into a good offensive rhythm and kept them off balance, and our blocking got better. We came out of the break looking slow and tired. We were down quite a bit, but came back to tie it up late. They went back ahead and we just couldn't pull it out. The next set, we jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Corbin's serve. They closed to within 3, but then we opened it up again. Once again, we were more effective offensively and defensively than they were. They got the first point in set 5, but then we ran a string on them and they never recovered. It was a nerve-wracking match to watch, and trying to give everybody updates had me going with both phones at the same time often.
I talked to coach after the match and congratulated him for getting the girls through adversity. He tried lots of stuff today to try to spark the team. He had several of the reserves go in at various times to try to bring a different approach to make things happen. Carmen really made some great plays today and served very well. Coach said he thought that we may have been "set up" for today's match, because we haven't had a match for a week and GW just came off a tough loss last night and would be stoked for us today. He helped the team keep their cool today. He said he thought they needed his support today instead of tough love. The ladies never looked anxious or overly concerned, and they took care of business when they had to.
Just a quick update on Nicki. She practiced a little yesterday, with no jumping. Jen told me if she can't jump by Tuesday or Wednesday, she won't play this weekend. Karyl will be gone to her grandmother's funeral this weekend, so if Nicki isn't available, Coach will have to get really creative!
