I was thinking about the retirement of Eric Green's jersey this weekend and started thinking. (never a good sign) Who was the best player ever to put on a Liberty Uniform? Was it Green? For that matter who was the best coach? I know coach Sam has his detractors and supporters. I just thought this would be an interesting discussion. I think that any current players should be left out of the discussion. What do you think?

I would definately agree, but I would rather leave the current players and coach out of the discussion. The most recent is almost always going to be the best in our eyes since we see them all the time.

I think this is going to be the biggest problem with this thread. People look at what they did after LU and simply go on that while most may have had more breaks then others.


If we're looking at best at LU then Sam Gado isnt in the top 10 heck maybe 50! But after LU then he'll be top 10 simply b/c of the breaks.

no I didnt...getting drafted is a credit to what you did in College. If I were to have used his 2 pro bowls then I would have gone against my argument. Pro Bowl would be what he has done after LU and in the NFL, getting drafted has to do with College

Erie Green was the best at his position in the entire country. Div I thru Div III. The guy from Nebraska (forget his name) was the only other TE remotely mentioned come draft time. Eric was a beast.

Jennings was good, I'd also put Fred Banks, James McKnight, Kelvin Edwards and Richard Shelton in his class. All played in the NFL.

The problem with looking at NFL careers along with Gado, however - Wayne Haddix had a nice NFL career, went to the Pro Bowl and led the NFL in interceptions returned for TDs one year but may not have been the best corner on his team at LU.

If we're looking at college careers, then we should consider Lawrence Worthington on offense and maybe Micky Paige on defense. Sy Green is by far the the most well known, but he emerged as a senior, and did very little prior to that.

Sam remains the top coach, until someone can match his wins against D1 programs with winning records.

Eric Green was a 1st rounder as a TE....that's tough to do at that position, not to mention against the competition he faced.



Now if RJ can get drafted in the first 3 rounds...to me that's just as impressive since a ton more RB's are taken then TE's

Oddly enough, it was Sam who discovered Green's potential when he took over as Coach during Green's senior season. Sam still had close ties with Art Modell and the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland was supposed to take Green late in the first round, but when word leaked that he was going to Cleveland, rival Pittsburgh grabbed him several spots before Cleveland selected. Sam advertised Sy as the next Ozzie Newsome (hall of fame TE for the Cleveland Browns). Late in his career, Sy Green ended up playing for Modell and Newsome in Baltimore.

as far as BUTCH Jennings - he should not even be mentioned as one of the best, he is not even close to his brother.
