There is now a facebook group trying to gain support for allowing concealed carry permit holders to carry on campus. Jr said it will be brought before the next board meeting. The percentage of people on campus with permits is tiny, but I see no reason they shouldn't be allowed to carry on campus versus the rest of the city.

let the debate begin :D

this is such a complex issue...In a way I am for it...but in the current climate I can understand them not allowing student to carry guns on campus...especially if they live in the dorms...even if they are locked away somewhere in the dorm so many people live in them that it could easily get in the wrong persons hands...its not an easy issue, that is for sure.

i bet there are guns in almost every dorm anyway. it wouldn't be hard to hide one in there. i know a lot of people who keep guns in there truck on campus because there is nowhere else to keep it at. they need to figure out a way to allow guns on campus, but this issue isn't gun storage on campus, its allowing concealed carry. to get a permit you have to be 21 and pass a course and background check. like i said earlier hardly anyone on campus even qualifies, and very few people have their permit.

Guns are on the premises, whether there are rules against it or not, because theres no enforcement of it. Why must we try to make it legal when you can do that anyway? And if a student is really THAT PARANOID for their safety they wouldnt let rules keep them form haveing one here.

With that said, I do sort of wish there was more security for entrances on campus. Obviously with the back entrance the way it is it would be absolutely ludacris to try something like that, but any day someone can get in who is not allowed in. Unfortunately there is no solution for it, just me thinking out loud

Dude did not have a gun, and followed a girl in a bathroom. Not necessarily what Im thinking about.

More so people who arent allowed to be on campus. We were quick to arrest the gay pride parade a while ago, but we have nothing that keeps a person who LUPD would arrest right away outside of the campus. Again no solution, but it kinda sucks.

Just so I make more sense, there was a guy who was on campus last Friday through Monday who had guns in his car, and who would have been arrested ASAP if LUPD knew he was on campus. I guess thats more what Im thinking of.

thats even more reason to allow concealed carry permit holders to carry on campus. they are law abiding citizens who are trained in how to use their firearm, so if someone did go psycho it would be more likely to end quickly than if a bunch of rednecks with no training start pullin guns and shooting people

Except for the trained rednecks shooting each other and then getting shot by the SWAT team because everyone thinks everyone else is the psycho.

Okay heres the problem with that logic.

Anyone who wants to have a gun on campus can.

Personally, I oppose guns on campus but not from a "somebody's gonna go Columbine" perspective. I've worked on 3 college campuses and my wife has worked on 2 and we've seen the amount of alcohol that flows through most college dorms these days. I can't imagine adding live ammunition to the mix.

Secondly, if this idea were to be implemented at some schools, I think you would see a sharp rise in firearm-related suicides on college campuses. These two factors may not be so prevalent at Liberty but one would have to be utterly naive to think they aren't there at all. The fact is that college kids from every background and every walk of life make stupid, self-destructive choices really really really really really really often. Why put something in their hands that's going to make some of those choices suddenly and tragically irreversible?

the point is to allow concealed carry on campus. that would mean professors or whoever could carry if they have a permit. that does not mean that anyone in a dorm would be allowed to have a gun, anymore than they already are, unless they had a permit

You're missing the point some are trying to make.

What's the difference in allowing it and not enforcing that they don't allow it?

because one way is legal and one way you could go to jail, and even though it isn't enforced I'm not gonna carry a gun on campus illegally because if something happened i don't want to go to jail. making it legal wouldn't do anything except allow people who are legally qualified to carry concealed to do so on campus

I'm very supportive of Concealed Carry Permits being honored on campus. These are responsible individuals and they should not be withheld from their right to carry. LUPD and even Lynch. PD can't be everywhere, so it would be great to have some other trained handgun holders on campus to protect us.

-Sigh-

The only thing I will say on this topic... is people who give these feel good statements really close out a lot of other facts that have to do with allowing people to carry guns on campus. It's not all about "The police can't be everywhere", which honestly isn't very good logic to begin with.

Just realize what you support when you put more and more guns in more and more places...
