Actually, the only thing Citadel and VMI cadets have in common is that they both applied to VMI :P

Speaking of Radford, they may not get to play in the Dedmond Center this year. We may have to go somewhere smaller which means we'll be closer to them. Get your flu shots early.

They actually have I think a club football team (they played the Post-Grad team from my alma mater, Hargrave Military Academy, and lost 50-0 in Chatham)

Yep, they do have a club football team...so does George Mason. I think Radford's Athletic Dept. views football the way our athletic dept. views hockey.

I remember JB's announcement in convo about the beat coastal theme. He told about some award, I dont think it was Sasser Cup, But it had to do with which big south school had the best facilities best teams best coaches and best students from an athletic stand point. He said that the award consitantyl goes to coastal. So he said, to be the best, we must beat the best.

Does anyone know which award I am talking about?

I was about to ask what was going on with Dedmon, but I found out here http://dedmon.asp.radford.edu/Home.html

What view is that? That it would be fiscally irresponsible to add such a sport?

In LU's case with hockey, I couldn't agree more!

Rivals are fun. They fill stadiums in seasons were neither teams are relevant, cause grown men to cry, preachers to wear ties of the enemy when they don't want to, and leave you with a crazy idea that you could win an arm wrestle match with Bill Gilespie (spelling unimportant). It is the source of some of the funniest jokes I ever heard and the way we decide a person's mental stability. Of course we want a rival. Admit it.

Rivals should be measured by the good things it does and not only by fights, fingers, and foul mouths.

My perception of the rivalry back BEFORE I got here in 2000 from a visitors standpoint and watching many a conference tournament...
...Before the Big South started sponsoring football...RADFORD was THE rival of Liberty. The fans seemed to have that vicious distaste for each other. The Redheads/Rowdies traveled here for games...and I imagine Liberty carried fans to RU. Of course, when Marshall built Winthrop...THEY (and Mrs. Marshall) became THE rival as Radford fell on very hard times in MBB.

In short...the RIVAL is going to be the team you MUST beat every year to be at or near the top in a given sport. Winthrop is the top dog in MBB...but does NOT have football. Other than about half of the past 10 years, LU MBB has been on the downside so it is hard for students to get fired up about ANY game (outside of UNCA last year which was awesome). Baseball...football...THAT IS BEAT COASTAL. (You track fans can say that too...but how many people come out as fans to just watch a meet...if they do not have a vested interest in the participants). Volleyball...that is WU. Softball...DEFINITELY Coastal as there is a bit of a"history" there.

Thus...since football is THE marquee sport these days at LU (apologies to WBB...but that is another debate)...so the theme WILL be...BEAT COASTAL. To heck if they don't share it. I suspect a couple more losses to the Flames will get the Beach Chicken fans to change their minds, though. The road to the championship now runs through Liberty.

Liberty?" Thinking that it probably would be Liberty, due to the fact of all the "Beat Coastal" T-Shirts passed out and how Coastal v. Liberty games are hyped more than normal games, I was surprised when Coastal students didn't think it was Liberty. In fact they really didn't think they had a "real" rival school. From what they told me they could care less about playing Liberty, it was just another game, there was no extra hype about the game, at least from the people I talked with.

So my question is why is the Coastal game hyped and promoted to Liberty Students as being a rivalry when in fact the only ones that seem to think so are Liberty people? In my opinion to have a REAL rivalry you have to have BOTH sides think its a rivalry game. I can remember in high school rivalry games meant police escorts for teams and stories of fights breaking out after the games. Thats a rivalry game, not this Coastal v. Liberty stuff. Lets face it Liberty doesn't have a true rival. THe Liberty v. coastal rivalry is a joke and in fact is a hoax.

Here's a definition of a Hoax--A hoax is a deliberate attempt to dupe, deceive or trick an audience into believing, or accepting, that something is real, when in fact it is not; or that something is true, when in fact it is false. In an instance of a hoax, an object, or event, is not what it appears to be, or what it is claimed to be

Honestly I think it is something that we are trying to generate. A rivalry with other teams in the Big South is pointless cause they all suck, respectively. Coastal is good, like us, in almost every sport. That's why we are forming a rivalry with them.

Don't worry though, when they keep catching "L"'s to Liberty then they start to hate us!
