Depends on what time it was. Depending on the time I could've been somewhere else in the building, not working, or a handful of other places.

If it was before 10 or after 3-ish I was probably gone for the day. I'm only allowed to work 20-ish hours a week.

One of the proudest moments of my Liberty basketball was being flipped off by Buzz Peterson's wife.

You and Buzz's wife? Awesome. Mine still includes Duggar's wife and all her friends. Not the finger, just some nice shoving

For me, it's easily the time where we got our "typical Liberty" comment from that coach...what game was that?

Yeah, when we were chanting "Transfer Omar", so Barclay decided it would be a good idea to turn around and tell us not to say that....

What a stupid idea for a coach to tell a student section not to say something.

It would depend on how he said it. I could see a coach going along with the joke and putting his finger in front of his mouth like shhhhhhhhhhhhh.........don't say that! With a smile.

Let's face it, he would have to be stupid not to know that chant was a compliment to his player, and really to him and his program as well.

Maybe we got 'Beat Coastal' shirts because we wanted to... here's a wild idea... beat Coastal, who happened to be the reigning conference champs in football at the time.

But I wouldn't consider Coastal our rivals. I don't despise them as much as the toothless hicks and lesbians they have down at Radford.

You're also an alumnus. Coastal had won the Sasser Cup the past four years before we did. To be the best, we had to go through Coastal. That's where the current rivalry came from, and that's how it's being sold to current students.

Students in the 80's and maybe early 90's considered JMU a rival.

Students in the late 90's/early 00's considered Radford a rival.

Currently, 2007 and on we consider Coastal one.

The current crop of LU students just doesn't see Radford as a rival, and I think that's a shame. Looks like they will be pretty good in MBB this year for the first time in a while, so maybe that will fire things up. It was quite intense for several years back in the day.

You've also gotta look at it as somewhat of an attempt by the community college kids to dismiss the Liberty program. It kind of diminishes us if they pretend like they don't care about LU. Don't buy it. Then when they graduate after two years they come to a school like LU and try to pump up the rivalry.

Reading through this thread, if no one said it, I was going to. But, SJ beat me to the punch.

Four consecutive years of conference-wide dominance. No more inspiration is needed to get a relatively new athletic administration to use its resources (money, time, effort, etc.) to generate a rivalry. Thank God they chose the only relevant one!

I have read this board for about 3 years now and never taken the time to actually register. I've finally been able to get excited the last couple years with the installation of a AD who knows a few things about sports.

-The reason Coastal is considered a rival is very clear, the road to the big south championship and a playoff berth has went through Coastal. The road doesn't go through vmi, GW, CSU, or any of the other teams. If we lost that game Saturday that really hurts our chances of getting into the playoffs since in essence CCU would probably have to lose 2 conference games for us to leapfrog them in standings.
-Second the reason we get cussed out and flipped the bird is simple as well. there are many radical liberals at these schools that hate what Liberty University represents. They not only want to beat our atheltic program, they want to beat our beliefs. Let's be serious, since I was a frosh in 2003 we have not dominated in either of the big 3 sports so it would be foolish to assume that we our hated due to our domination. It's also foolish to think that every visiting team is treated the same. Teams get bad reputations as being dirty, or cheap shots in recruting etc. I hope in the future we get this treatment not just because of this but because we become the team to beat year in year out.

I agree...I think Coastal is one of the most important teams we face b/c generally it's for the top but I enjoy nothing more then beating Radford....classic moments all involve Radford, one of my favorites is the basketball game when their coach stormed across the floor to tell Doc to tell his students to be quite...Doc's response "You hot dog I know what your doing, your trying to break the momentum!"...classic

Not always are rivalry's close games...its a matter of who do you enjoy beating the crap out of the most...for me it's Radford, I hope they continue to stink so we can keep sticking it to them

And that's the biggest difference. You were around in the 90's and early 00's when all that was going on. The current students enjoy beating Coastal in everything. Half the school probably doesn't even realize we play Radford in everything.

I couldn't care less about who our rival is. I want to be everyone the same. I didn't leave with any animosity towards Coastal. I left because Coastal wasn't for me.

I see both sides of this and it's been evident through the things that I have said. Someone started a thread about why Coastal was our rival. Others, mainly alumni and people who have been around much longer than current students, of which I still am, have said things about Radford. I'm in my third year on campus and since I've been here, Radford has been absolutely nothing in most sports and most students couldn't care less about them. If the alumni and people who have been here their entire life don't like Radford then great, so be it. At the same time, they should realize why current students believe Coastal to be a rival. It's not that I hate Coastal or have any extra incentive to beat them because I went there. My transferring had absolutely nothing to do with athletics.

I remember when I first came to LU, our big rivals were Radford, VMI and High Point due to close proximity and close games (minues the 2004 Big South men's bball championship).

Coastal to LU is what Miami is to VT: the top competitor thats likely to get in the way of goals. Radford and VMI to LU is what UVA is to VT: The in-state rival that you enjoy beating and letting them know they suck every chance you get.

I love making fun of all of them. I get up to beat all of them. I just think beating Coastal actually means more.
