As I sat around with some of my Coastal Carolina friends after the game on Saturday night I posed the question to them just for the fun of it "Who would you consider your conference rivals? Liberty?" Thinking that it probably would be Liberty, due to the fact of all the "Beat Coastal" T-Shirts passed out and how Coastal v. Liberty games are hyped more than normal games, I was surprised when Coastal students didn't think it was Liberty. In fact they really didn't think they had a "real" rival school. From what they told me they could care less about playing Liberty, it was just another game, there was no extra hype about the game, at least from the people I talked with.

So my question is why is the Coastal game hyped and promoted to Liberty Students as being a rivalry when in fact the only ones that seem to think so are Liberty people? In my opinion to have a REAL rivalry you have to have BOTH sides think its a rivalry game. I can remember in high school rivalry games meant police escorts for teams and stories of fights breaking out after the games. Thats a rivalry game, not this Coastal v. Liberty stuff. Lets face it Liberty doesn't have a true rival. THe Liberty v. coastal rivalry is a joke and in fact is a hoax.

Here's a definition of a Hoax--A hoax is a deliberate attempt to dupe, deceive or trick an audience into believing, or accepting, that something is real, when in fact it is not; or that something is true, when in fact it is false. In an instance of a hoax, an object, or event, is not what it appears to be, or what it is claimed to be

No one has ever tried to deceive anyone. The reason the school has started to describe Coastal as a rival is because Coastal is the only school that is good across the board. To be the best in the league, you have to go through Coastal in most things. The students at Coastal may not consider Liberty a rival. The fact they don't even know who their real rival is (CSU or Winthrop) proves that they're just a bunch of uninformed kids that don't give a crap about games if they can't get drunk before hand. Some rivalries are born. Some are created. We're trying to create one. While the fans may not consider it a rivalry, the players do. I don't know a single athlete that doesn't absolutely despise playing Coastal.

Also, just because one school doesn't consider the other a rival doesn't mean there's no rivalry. ECU considers NC State a rival. NC State doesn't care about ECU. They consider UNC a rival. UNC doesn't care about NC State. They consider Duke a rival. Just because NC State doesn't care about ECU doesn't mean that they're not rivals from the ECU perspective.

are you saying you want us to start a fight so we can begin a hardcore rivalry?

i thought a rivalry was beginning with W&M but then the series ended.. so much for that

Also, for a kid as smart as you, you really can be dumb on some of this stuff.

Not all rivalries require police escorts and have to have fights. There are plenty of rivalries where two teams can't stand each other but they don't get violent.

For a bunch of students who didn't care about us, they did seem to flick us off and cuss at us any chance they got.

Maybe, but I would bet its the exception, not the norm. As far as getting flipped off and cussed at, I am going to go out on gut feeling and say that their fans would treat all visiting fans the same. I know personally if I was flipping people off and cussing at other visiting fans I wouldn't just do it to coastal fans, I would do it to all visiting fans regardless of which team it is whenever the occasion presented itself. Maybe I'm wrong on this one though--you went to Coastal Jon, what do you remember about the game atmosphere--did people flip liberty people off specifically because they were Liberty and not other teams fans too?

They did it to everyone, but people involved in athletics got more pleasure out of beating Liberty than other schools.

Not having a fight is the exception to the rule? Once again, for a kid as smart as you, that's just dumb.

i always thought the beat coastal movement was due to it being rocco's "red letter game" not trying to cause some huge rivalry...i have never really seen coastal as an equal rival given their relatively recent addition of football in the last ten years...they were the hot thing in the big south but that is over-- id say this year the game i would've circled on the calendar would be against elon since they were really the last fcs team to make us look bad and we get em at home with alot potentially up for grabs

and no im not suggesting elon is our big rival....for me that will always be shared by radturd or the queerdets

No one at Liberty cares about Radford anymore. No one cares about VMI either. It's because, in general, they're both not very good in most sports. Coastal is average to good in pretty much everything. That's where the rivalry was formed.

just because you transferred from coastal to liberty does not qualify it as a rivalry maybe you are still conflicted but im sure i speak for more than myself when i say that all around radford and vmi are still rivals

To who? Obviously not the students. Students don't travel to VMI or Radford for games. Students don't show up even earlier than normal for VMI and Radford games. They show up to Coastal games in more number and earlier than they do any other school we play.

To the old guys on here, JMU is still considered a rival. JMU couldn't care less about us.

also pretty sure that mantra did not exist before last year so if its a rivalry so be it- just a manufactured one that is going on its first birthday

in my defense i travelled and was escorted out of a radford game before you were a fanatic...and people did travel to vmi games for football and basketball...the point of my post was that there is no history in it when we do have a history with other schools

i didn't even know vmi ever was a rival. people still think of RU as a rival, but don't treat it like one. the athletic department is trying to create a rivalry with coastal and the reason the students come out is b/c it is promoted so much. its not as much of a rivalry as it is a really hyped up game, but i guess the hope is that it turns into a real rivalry soon

Please dont be confused, this is no rivalry we just have to budget to afford printing up T-Shirts for just a normal game (against a team who happened to be good back then)

You're making my point for me.
SuperJon wrote:Some rivalries are born. Some are created. We're trying to create one.
In the past, Radford and VMI were rivals. They were good in the past. No one is discounting that. However, at the present time, Coastal is the team we compete with in everything for conference titles.

No one is denying that this thing was completely manufactured last year. However, it's turning into more than that. Students are starting to buy into it. Students are finally starting to get excited about something. I would love to have a rivalry against VMI or Radford but they've got to matter first.

RU is only a rival in basketball IMO. they don't have football and in pretty much every other sport they are not competitive in the BSC.

id consider vmi a rival at least for the fact that it is the closest school we play in our conference also they travel well with all the keydets showing up and making noise in our stadiums it may not always be the most important game in football but they have had our number before at least in basketball and if you go back a few years in football too....also when it comes down to it there are alot of people in the area with ties to lu or vmi which adds to what i at least would consider a rivalry

If we want to be the bet we have to beat the best team in our conference. Seeing as coastal has always been one of the best teams i say its a pretty fair to assume they think its a rivalry game as well. :D

What is said in meetings, stays in meetings. However, if you would've walked through the FOC last week, you would've seen how important the game was.
