Sly's wondering where option 3 is: Coke.

Oh, and soda is correct.

I prefer neither. I use the term 'soft drinks' instead. After all, that's technically what they are.

i would say what i want. example: i want mountain dew. i want coke. i want sweet tea.
when asking someone what they want, i would say "what do you want to drink"
pop v soda is a stupid debate

soda or pop...fine. But I have and will never understand how you can call any soft drink a coke. I remember going into a restaurant in Georgia I believe. I asked for a Coke...she said, "what kind"...and I was like ummmm Coke Coke...and she was like...Coca Cola? I was like umm yeah...

I was just like wow...

off topic, but similar debates:

"in back of" vs. "behind" - bill clinton is standing in back of monica. bill clinton is standing behind monica.

doing a "wash" vs. doing the "laundry" - i'm doin a wash. i'm doin laundry.

i'm with truedrew. soft drinks.

I've been converted to "pop" -- you say soda around here and they don't know what to do.

But if I had to choose the lesser of two evils, clearly it's soda. You don't abbreviate things with the second word in the phrase! And soda is a MUCH more descriptive word for what the product actually is.

And before someone comments on how weird it is to call it all coke, think to yourself...

Do I call all cotton ear swabs Q-Tips?
Do I call all tissues Kleenex's?

You do it, too. Just not with "pop". Those of us who know call it all coke, to avoid confusion. :)

"Coke" in my part of WV (no Randy Moss jokes, please), but my MD relatives always said "Soda".

I can't dignify the 'call it coke' argument. What if I want a Sprite, which is usually what I do want? That's not Coke. It's not flavored like Coke. Coke is a brand-name for a particular kind of soft-drink. I know "so is band-aid", but pretty much all adhesive bandages are alike. Same with kleenex or q-tips. To say "Coke" is a satisfactory way to describe all types of soft drinks is ridiculous.

Pop is a slang term, I suppose... Soda is at least descriptive, because all types of soft drinks are flavored soda water.

I want to know, though, looking at the map I linked to at the top of this thread... what's the deal with those counties in New Mexico? What do they call it?

I think the most irritating thing was when my roommate used to call the vacuum "the sweeper". What a homo.

Coca-Cola's cutthroat lawyers have done a great job. As people have begun calling all soft drinks Coke, if Coca-Cola finds out that any dining establishment serves Pepsi or any kind of "soda" to anyone who asks for Coke, they will sue the establishment. They will actually send in spies to places and record the conversation. Thus, now you will find that most places serve Coca-Cola products because if one server screws up, it may mean the end of the establishment. Or they have no tolerance policy for servers if they screw up and don't say "is Pepsi ok."

Around here everybody just calls it a drink. I'm waiting for SuperJon to chime in so I can see if he's in the same boat as I am. "Hey, could you get me something to drink while you're up?"

Since it's fall break, here's a little history lesson:

Coke (invented 1886)
Pepsi (1903)
Cheerwine (1917)
A&W Root Beer (1919)
7-Up (1929)
Sprite (1961)

Sweet Tea (probably invented by Adam in Eden before the Fall) :D
