Since we are on the subject of Sonoma, I truly believe that a Gordon will make it to victory lane....only it will not be Jeff. Robby Gordon has been having a year in which in his eyes he thinks is good. All be it some bad pit decisions earlier in the year, Robby would easily be in the top 20 in points. All that being said, Robby is a true road racer and his colors will truly shine this weekend, all be it his crew helps him out.

Gordon is a good road course driver but I highly doubt that he will win this week.. I would put my money on Jeff any day on a road course. over Robby.. I am going to go with Tony Stewart, his shoulder seems to be better after beating the crap out of his car with that sledge hammer....

The guys with open wheel backgrounds always tend to dominate the road courses with the possible exception of Terry Labonte who tended defy that logic.

Just because I know what's going on doesn't mean I'm enthusiastic about it. I know far more about the WNBA than I ever cared to. But you won't see me putting much effort into those discussions outside of Katie.

Gordon captures ninth road-course victory
Dodge/Save Mart 350 win is first for No. 24 team this season
By Mike Harris, The Associated Press
June 25, 2006
08:42 PM EDT (00:42 GMT)

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) -- Jeff Gordon combined patience with a fast race car Sunday at Infineon Raceway to grab a record ninth road-course victory.

NASCAR's top "Road Warrior" started 11th in the 43-car field and took the lead for the first time on Lap 49 of the 110-lap Dodge/Save Mart 350.

Two-time series champion Terry Labonte grabbed the lead for a while with a slick fuel strategy, but Gordon was able to hunt NASCAR's "Iceman" down, regain the lead on Lap 88 and eventually pull away for his fifth victory on the picturesque 1.99-mile, 11-turn circuit.

It was a big weekend for Gordon, who acknowledged that he told family and friends Saturday night he is engaged to his longtime girlfriend Ingrid Vandebosch.

"This has been just an awesome weekend," said Gordon, who led a race-high 44 laps.

"Man, I didn't know if we were ever going to win another one of these races. I knew this team was something special, we just haven't had a chance to really show it," he added. "They gave me such an awesome race car this weekend that I had to get them this win. If we didn't win with this car, we can't ever win."

Gordon's first win of the year and the 74th of his career came in the 16th race of the season, boosting the four-time series champion back into the top 10 -- a key move for his chances of making the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship. It's only the third time since Gordon began racing full-time in NASCAR's top series in 1993 that he has gone this deep into the season before winning.

Labonte, driving this week for the first-year Hall of Fame Racing team co-owned by former NFL quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, pitted for the final time on Lap 60 and found himself in the lead on Lap 71 after all the other leaders made their final stops.

Gordon was about 12 seconds behind Labonte after his pit stop on lap 70. With Labonte conserving fuel as much as possible in an effort to make it to the end, Gordon steadily cut into the margin, finally passing Labonte with a strong inside move on the hairpin 11th-turn.

Three late caution flags helped Labonte save fuel and kept the field bunched up. After a six-car crash on Lap 105 brought out the second red flag of the race to allow for a cleanup -- this one for 13 minutes -- Labonte and the rest of the contenders got one last shot at Gordon.

But the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was just too strong. Gordon took the green flag for the start of Lap 108 and pulled away. Ryan Newman finally got past Labonte for second place on Lap 109, finishing 1.25 seconds -- about 8 car-lengths -- behind the winner.

Greg Biffle finished fourth, followed by pole-winner Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards and Jeff Burton.

"We should have been second but I didn't get my tires good and clean after that last red flag," said Labonte, who earned his nickname with a cool, quiet demeanor that paid off again on Sunday. "I didn't want to use too much gas. It took me a couple of laps to get going and the 12 car [Newman] got me."

Labonte, who plans to retire from the cockpit at the end of this season, ran only nine races last year and has run 10 of 16 this year. This was the first top five finish for the 49-year-old Labonte since winning the second race at Darlington in 2003.

The victory by Gordon broke a string of three consecutive road-course victories for Tony Stewart, who had another unlucky day. The defending race champion and reigning Nextel Cup champion, who was knocked out of last week's race at Michigan, overcame a drive-through penalty for speeding on pit road Sunday and appeared strong enough to contend for another win until he lost a cylinder late in the race. He wound up 28th.

Series leader Jimmie Johnson, Gordon's teammate, survived a spin to finish 10th and increased his lead over Matt Kenseth -- 17th on Sunday -- from 74 to 101 points. Gordon jumped from 11th to eighth in the standings, while Stewart fell from sixth to seventh, 26 points ahead of Gordon heading into next Saturday's race at Daytona.

Vickers signs with Red Bull to drive Toyota in '07
By Dave Rodman, NASCAR.COM
June 26, 2006
09:37 AM EDT (13:37 GMT)

About two hours after he finished 14th in Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, Brian Vickers appeared on television to announce he would drive a Toyota Camry for Team Red Bull in 2007.

Vickers, who little more than a week ago revealed a "mutual" decision to sever his four-year relationship with Hendrick Motorsports, announced a multi-year deal with Red Bull, one of three teams that will race Toyotas next season, on SPEED's Wind Tunnel.

With his result Sunday, Vickers moved up two positions in the Nextel Cup standings to 20th. He has two top-five and four top-10 finishes in 16 starts.

Vickers, who won Saturday's AutoZone Elite Grand National West Series race at Infineon, using a car formerly driven by the late Ricky Hendrick and carrying Hendrick's number and paint scheme, said he was "committed" to Hendrick Motorsports for the rest of the 2006 season.

Red Bull previously announced a limited program of Nextel Cup races at the end of this season using driver Bill Elliott. Toyota is scheduled to make its first Nextel Cup start at the 2007 Daytona 500.

I drove past Wilkesboro Speedway today and it was just sitting there rotting and rotting. It's pretty sad.

I also drove past Junior Johnson's house and once again let me say it is freaking huge.

I'm no Cowboy fan ... even though I used to be a Roger fan. He's from my hometown of Cincinnati and he symbolized everything a pro athlete should be on the field & off.

But I've had rather lengthy history with Terry dating back to my days working in Corpus Christi in the Early '90s. I'm glad to see him shake off the rust and perform like that.

Agreed- nice to see Terry up front. And I was a big Staubach fan in the 70's/80's until someone explained the concept of "suburbs" and "Philly market" via a closed fist.

This is interesting and much needed

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR chairman Brian France promised slight changes to the sport's championship format, hoping to add more drama to the 10-race title hunt.

"What I have always said about the Chase was we needed a few years under our belt to see how it evolves, how it changes in strategy, see how the actual formula we have really works," France said Thursday. "Now in our third year ... it's the ideal time for us make adjustments."

France did not specify what areas will be changed in an offseason facelift that will take effect in 2007.

The Chase for the Nextel Cup was devised by France when he took over as chairman in 2004. The format was designed to spice up a stale championship race in which winners were running away with the title and routinely clinching before the season finale.

France wanted more excitement and a dramatic playoff system that could compete with the NFL for television ratings.

The result was the Chase, which uses the first 26 races of the season as a qualifier to set up the title run. The top 10 drivers in the standings automatically make it in, and any drivers within 400 points of the leader are also eligible.

They then compete over the final 10 events to decide the championship.

Although the first season was a success, with five drivers in mathematical contention to win the title heading into the finale, Tony Stewart's 2005 dominating run lacked the same punch.

Several flaws in the system have also been revealed along the way.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, NASCAR's two biggest stars, were both locked out of the Chase last year because of subpar seasons. The 400-point mark has yet to come into play, and its been proven that one or two poor finishes -- especially at the start of the Chase -- can cripple a drivers' title hopes.

"We'll be looking at nothing new -- everything that we'll be looking at has been brought up by various people the last couple of years," France said. "Just various things that we think will build what we're hoping for, which are big moments and a bigger stage for the drivers.

"That's what the Chase has always been about. It's about showcasing their skills."

Stewart was back to his on-track dominance and off-track hijinks, winning at Daytona International Speedway by charging to the lead with two laps to go Saturday night. He then celebrated with his trademark climbing of the fence, but made the mistake of jumping into the crowd -- where he found himself overwhelmed by rowdy fans.

He had to be rescued by his crew and several NASCAR officials, who cleared a path through the mob for the beloved NASCAR champion.

"I made the mistake of going down the ladder," he said. "I thought there was a gate there. I didn't find the gate and was in the mosh pit for a while."

But Stewart, who started climbing fences with this race last year, wasn't going to disappoint the expectant crowd.

"There was no way I was going to let those race fans down," he said. "It started here ... I was either going to get all the way up or I was going to fall off and fall on my butt. But I wasn't going to stop.

"It was every bit as big, if not bigger, than it was last year."

But the race was nothing like last year, when he rolled to a dominating victory in which he led all but nine laps. Instead, he had to earn it after two late cautions nearly yanked the win away from him.

Stewart, who led 85 of the 160 laps, was out front when Jimmie Johnson bumped into Bobby Labonte with 14 laps to go to bring out just the fourth caution in what had been an unusually calm race. It set up one final round of pit stops, and Stewart dropped all the way back to 10th on the restart.

Boris Said, the surprising pole-sitter, didn't pit and inherited the lead. But he kept a nervous eye on his rearview mirror, all too aware of Stewart's bright orange No. 20 Chevrolet closing in on his bumper.

Stewart jumped all the way to second in one sweeping move on the low side of the track, and was preparing to pass Said when a wreck behind him brought out the fifth caution. It gave him time to figure his strategy, which was to sit back and let Said jump out to a huge lead on the restart with three laps to go.

It left Said without any drafting help, and Stewart used a full steam of drafting help to pass him on the outside with two to go.

"I felt like we had a better shot of getting around Boris than we would anybody else," Stewart said. "Not because Boris isn't a great driver, but he hasn't had a lot of experience on restrictor-plate racing and knowing what to do and what to watch for.

"I knew some things I could do that he wouldn't be looking for."

He was back out front when the race was stopped on the final lap for a debris caution, earning his second win of the season and ending a slump that began six races ago when he broke his shoulder blade in an accident at Lowe's.

Stewart had finishes of 42nd, 25th, third, 41st and 28th since the accident, and dropped from fourth to seventh in the standings. The victory pushed him back up to fifth.

"This team needed this," he said in Victory Lane. "We've had two really rough weeks the last couple of weeks."

Stewart celebrated with his climb to the top of the flagstand, then took it a step further by going over into the crowd.

"I don't know why I do half the stupid stuff I do," he said. "I really felt good at the end of the race until I got stupid and went up the flagstand."

Kyle Busch finished second, his older brother, Kurt, was third and the two were disappointed not to get a chance to team together to chase Stewart down on the final lap.

"I would have done anything Kyle needed me to do for him to go to Victory Lane," Kurt said.

"What a brother," Kyle replied.

"It takes two to pass Tony," Kurt added.

Said, running in just his second race of the year, wound up an impressive fourth and was thrilled with the outcome.

"I just feel like Rocky Balboa in the 15th round, and I just won," he said.

Matt Kenseth finished fifth and was followed by Elliott Sadler, Casey Mears, Jamie McMurray, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer.

Johnson, the points leader, was running in fourth when he wrecked with Labonte. It cost him a shot at his third restrictor-plate victory of the season, and he wound up 32nd. His lead was sliced to 13 points on Kenseth.

Jeff Gordon, who was trying to tie the late Dale Earnhardt with 11 plate victories, was among the contenders all night until he was caught in the final accident. The five-car wreck occurred when rookie J.J. Yeley and Greg Biffle made contact, and Gordon was caught in the carnage.

He finished 40th and dropped all the way to 12th in the standings.

"There were so many guys out there, and I want to bad mouth every one of them," Gordon said. "But I'm not going to. If I don't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all."
