Liberty's Jennings, Scott of Colgate head FCS players of the week

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Rashad Jennings of Liberty, Jordan Scott of Colgate, Nate Thellen of Northeastern and Joe Marcoux of Villanova have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Rashad Jennings, Liberty, 6-1, 230, Senior, Running Back, Forest, VA.

Jennings rushed for a career-high 220 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns to help Liberty defeat Youngstown State, 31-28 Saturday night at the Ice Castle. Jennings scored on runs of two, two and six yards as the Flames claimed their first win over a ranked opponent since 1997. Jennings averaged 7.6 yards per carry, the fifth-highest of his career, and his 220 rushing yards are the sixth-most in a game in Big South history. He also recorded his fifth career game with three rushing touchdowns, extending his Big South record.

Hard to believe that an RB had a better game than Rashad on Saturday:
Jordan Scott, Colgate, 5-11, 205, Senior, Running Back, Hyattville, MD.

Scott carried 43 times for a career-high 272 yards and matched a career-high with four touchdowns, including the final score with nine seconds left, to lead Colgate to a 31-24 win at Fordham.

I wonder how that game has helped RJ draft stock.

Unfortunately RJ's stats for the season aren't going to be "gaudy" enough to win the Payton. Rashad isn't going to get 50 carries in a game. In order to win Liberty has to mix things up a bit ... as all good teams do. If LU just rode RJ every play then I have no doubt he could put up 300+ yards a game, but Liberty wouldn't win as many games. Generaly the voters are more impressed by the padded and gaudy individual stats. The great "equalizer" would be if LU were to make a real run at the National Championship. That would do a great deal to put him in the hunt for the award.

RJ is getting the same amount of yards on less carries than the 40-50 carry RB's like Colgate's Scott. Less carries + same yards= Better RB. no running back on that list will put up or has put up 300 a game. colgate's scott and RJ are about the only two RB's who deserve it. The only other guy that could win it is the Citidel WR who had 157 yards and 2 or 3 TD's against Clemson. But its extremely hard for a WR to win the Walter Payton award.

I'm thinking getting drafted would be more important than winning the Payton Award. Awards are nice. Pay checks are better.

Payton award winners in the NFL you might know...

Adrian Peterson
Tony Romo
Brian Westbrook

Winning award=Pretty good chance at playing on sundays

It's not the same Adrian Peterson you're thinking of. It's the guy that was 3rd string for the Bears for a few years.

Last nine Payton Award winners and if they were successful in the NFL:

Jayson Foster - cut - never made an NFL roster
Ricky Santos - never even got to the point he could be listed as cut
Erik Meyer - 2 seasons - played in one preseason game
Lang Campbell - Played in two preseason games and handed the ball off in one regular season game
Jamaal Branch - career stats: 10 carries for 29 yards
Tony Romo - He made it.
Brian Westbrook - He made it.
Louis Ivory - Nothing. Ever.
Adrian Peterson - Didn't do much.

Being a Payton winner doesn't guarantee anything. Just like being the Heisman winner doesn't guarantee anything. Scouts will look more at how he runs, his physical attributes, his work ethic, his maturity, his leadership, and a number of other things before they even get to his stats.

But it would be nice publicity for the program for Rashad to get the Payton. Of course the higher he gets draft or getting drafted at all will also help the program.

Adrian Peterson at Georgia Southern was an absolute beast at this level. His run through the 1999 playoffs was ridiculous.

Just for fun, check out this run from the national championship game against Youngstown State:

And here are his stats from 99 ... ran for 333 yards and five TDs against UMass in the playoffs.

Why didn't he just stop, let the defenders climb onto his back, and then run on like that? WOW!

He's not getting the same amount of yards. Scott is averaging over 60 yards per game more than Jennings. Now I haven't seen the numbers yet, but jennings might be comparable in yards per carry.

RJ's yards per carry is slightly higher than Scott's. Scott, however, is averaging about 10 more carries per game than Rashad. Basically, Scott IS Colgate's offense whereas Rashad is merely one very effective weapon for us.
