Call it a choke, because it was
BUT
We were a game below .500 when Manuel came in. Wagner spent most of the second half on the DL, making an already atrocious bullpen worse. Perez pitched a good second half, Santana is still worth any money we could have paid him(although I really liked our prospect of who is in Center for the Twins), To be honest, this year wasnt a choke. We had a hot summer that put us in first. In reality though, we did not have the personnel needed to make the playoffs.
Show me a player for the Mets who could hit in the 6 or 7 spot and Ill show you a good month for Tatis.
Once you get past 5, (Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Church), theres absolutely noone consistently productive. Our bullpen blew 29 saves. 29! Thats not a choke at the end of the year. Thats a consistent lack of relievers who can get the job done. Our starters pitched well this year, Our key hitters did alright, but the lack of productive role players and bullpen is a killer.
To be honest, as dissapointing as the last 17 games were, I think the Mets shouldnt have been in the running in the first place, so I can live with it this time.
