Football: Penguins Defeat Second-Ranked North Dakota State in Thrilling Fashion

Image

Youngstown – The Youngstown State football team had their backs up against the wall on many occasions Saturday evening, but found a way to win a game that came down to final seconds against North Dakota State winning 32-24 at Stambaugh Stadium.

In a battle of wills, the 24th-rated Penguins outlasted the second-ranked Bison and like last week, the offense, defense, and special teams all made their contributions to the victory.

YSU (2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference) used a final defensive stand to hang on for their first win against top-five FCS team since beating third-ranked Illinois State in 2006.

That's a great looking I-AA stadium.

I was there several years chaperoning a band trip (seriously, BJ), watching our football lose in the pouring rain. I brought an umbrella, but they were prohibited inside the stadium, so I ended up buying an orange Youngstown poncho with little penguins all over it.

If you can put up with the less than scintillating commentary and camcorder video, you can at least get a feel for what went down Saturday night in Ytown at the Guin Zone.

Wow, they sure had a lot of empty seats for what should have been a BIG game!

Rooster, it's a 20,600 seat stadium for a university that only has 13,700 students.

precisely what some have suggested would happen if we expanded the 'Bill too fast...

I was pointing out that a very high football program has quite a few vacancies at a big game. YSU is huge in football, but maybe not worth unaffiliated locals buying tickets.
It's no wonder LU is being so cautious about adding on. I agree that we should wait until we are over capacity for most of a whole season.

We've been over official capacity for every game so far this season, every game last season and most of '06.

Have we EVER been at the point to turn people away?

As long as we have a grassy hill above the south endzone for people to sit, I doubt we'll ever turn people away. :welcome

Why would we turn people away? Correct me if I'm wrong but do we not still have the hillsides? Also, if my undergrad experience was any indication, a good portion of the students just mill around on the visitors side concourse anyway.

So if that is the case why are we even talking about Expanding the stadium. OH, because everyone (especially townies) loves sitting in the grass!

On a side note of RTF's comments, that visitor's side concourse is bananas this year. I got caught on the wrong side of the stadium week 1 and had to walk through the other side. It was students shoulder to shoulder throughout that whole area. Just kids having conversations. Pretty much impossible to get in line for food or even just walk by.

What is the opinion of what a victory would do for Liberty in the I-AA standings? ND State is still ranked 2nd or 3rd after losing to Youngstown State last week.

I'm not sure why you think I'm arguing with you. I merely pointed out that we've been over capacity for nearly two straight years and that we're not in the habit of turning people away.

I'm not arguing either, just trying to point out that I think it is a good plan for us to wait for consistent Demand for seats far above capacity before expanding. I hate empty seats!

Where are you seeing that. Doesn't look like the polls have been updated just yet to me. Does Youngstown jump us since they had a big win and we had a buy week?

How about answering the question after the polls for this weekend's games are released?........Regardless of where ND State ends up, does LU have a chance to leapfrog them in the polls with a victory at YSU?

Don't be suprised if NDS is still ranked very high and still in front of Youngstown. the guys with the polls can be very, very strange about a #23 beating a #2 at the FCS level. In the FBS they would have tumbled somewhere betwen #13-#15. Youngstown should make a big jump into the teens. If Liberty were to beat Youngstown that would put them 4-0 with a huge, quality win and would shoot them up the rankings about 10 slots or so. By the way, don't be surprised if Liberty drops a notch or two...or out of the top 25 because of the bye week. I don't see how it could happen, but stranger things have happened. Out of sight ... out of mind. I thing the sports network poll usually comes out around 3:00pm or so. That's when I usually am able to find it.
