So I came across this at work, and totally appreciate the spirit of the gesture, but are they serious in publishing this for all to see?
https://www.liberty.edu/libertyjournal/ ... &artid=380

IDK it almost reads like an article from the onion especially if you are to just look at the picture/read the title which is what most will be doing when they see it on the splash page.

Does sound like something from The Onion

Also, if you just read the headline like you say many will do just that (which is surely true) then it makes this dude and LU alumni sound cheap - which obviously they all aren't based on how much the school is growing.

its a PR thing. It tells everybody, even 12 bucks is appreciated. Smart move actually if you ask me.

As long as JJ and LU come across as genuine (which they do) then I think it's smart. If he continues giving all he can, I dont think it will stay at $12 to long...judging by his field and schooling

Did anybody else see this thread title and think it was referencing a specific FlameFans poster?

I think it's great to publicize it. It shows that any little bit helps. There are those of us who didn't go to convo (i.e. me) who see things like this and it makes us think about things differently.

like I said i appreciate the genuine move -can't knock it at all, but the title of the article prolly should've omitted the dollar amount bc something like that is just destined to find its way into the opening monologue of a late night show, at least it would seem humorous to a writer for conan or john stewart who had no other reference for liberty other than its jerry's school

I think one thing that too many people are going to read over is that the guy did the math and says if every person that graduated last year did this and just sent in $12, it would be like $57,000 or something like that, which is a pretty significant chunk of change every year. Not alot, but its still better than nothing.

Not exactly my name, but let's face it, on teacher's pay, $12 would be a pretty big deal for me, too.

I'm touched. Sounds about how much I'd donate.

I don't give money specifically, but I do know that I will when my two children go...but also, they get the kids that I have nurtured as a youth pastor for the past 10 years. I know that may not count though. Oh well, I'll be expecting a big thank you from the school somehow, prolly a nice hassle from the registrars/financial aid office in a couple of years.

no one is entitled to give back to your alma mater, but you should simply because of school pride and wanting to see the university better than we you were there. everyone can afford $12 in a years time. that is a small sacrifice. maybe stay away from the movies on week, or a few less trips to your local fast food joint. every bit helps. that was the whole idea!

So I'm supposed to send money to pay for a ski slope? I lived in the circle dorms for 3 years. If they can charge what they did and put kids in a dump like that I think they've gotten enough from me and my family.

That's just ignorant.

The school had the money for the ski slope donated.

The money you would be donating could be earmarked for dorms so that they could fix up the dorms that were so bad when you were there.

It all comes down to do you want to complain about how you had it so bad or do you want to help make things better so that later generations can have things better than you did.

Just so you know most if not all the circle dorms got renovated within the last 3 years. Although its not going to look like anything new it still is better than in recent years.

It is not ignorant. Jon please understand that not everyone who gets hosed wants to give back to LU. Im not saying hes right or wrong, but this is a common area of concern for circle dwellers. paying too much for a aluminum hut. Yes the dorms are functional, but when you live in a house that keeps breaking, and the people supposed to fix the house seem way too worried about growing and building this and that and yet they never really show an interest in improving your home I can see how a certain point comes where you feel like you got hosed.

And people who feel like they got a bad deal arent going to want to deal again

I'm not saying everything was ignorant. I was saying the "why should I pay for a ski slope" comment was ignorant.

The ski slope is wrong yes, but the idea is not. New buildings(paid for or not) have always garnered the excitement of everyone while the trailers get no love from LU maintenence.

I know the guy this article is about: he's an Honors Program graduate and has the LU record for the highest-ever Liberty score on the MCAT (for med school), so I assure you, he will be giving more money to LU in a few years. :nod

Ok, the ski slope comment was a joke. I know a lot of really nice stuff at LU has been given through donations specifically set aside for their purpose. I won't be giving any cash because I don't feel like the money my family gave in tuition, room and board and fees was well spent. I could have gotten a better quality education and had access to much nicer facilities for far less money. I am not bitter toward LU. I just don't feel like they deserve any more of my money.

I'd rather complain. You can give enough for both of us.
