Realist, what do you know about where this kid plays? He plays against the highest calibre of competition in Houston which is one of the richest hoops recruiting grounds in the nation. He is one of the top scorers for a pair of AAU teams that challenge for national titles every single year. He will still be pursued by major programs over the course of the next 14 months until his signing day. And did we mention he just finished up his sophomore year? He is on the radar screen for a slew of major programs for which we have reason to be nervous until the ink dries in November '09.

Suuure. Is his homeschool league the same quality as the one Monceaux played in?

Sly knows what he's talking about here Realist. This is right in his back yard. Monceaux was not homeschooled by the way. He played in a league of small private christian schools, and yes, the competition was weak. I might also add that as much grief as he takes, Jeremy had a pretty good freshman year at LU and made the BSC all-freshman team. Russell Monroe is the only recent homeschooler at LU, and he also played against inferior competition.

HYCA is on a whole different level. Their schedule consists almost exclusively of tough Houston public school opponents, and they beat them regularly. Add to that the high level AAU success this kid has had, and the interest shown in him at this age, and I really don't think we are blowing this too much out of proportion.

We're Liberty so of course we're blowing it out of proportion, but I don't see it as bad as Realist makes it out to be.

There is a homeschool association in Houston that has thousands of kids in it. They have several teams including their top level team that competes against the largest public & private schools in Texas. Last season with Jesse at point, they were generally ranked in Top 5 overall teams in the city by both RCS Sports & the Houston Chronicle. The only time they play other homeschoolers are the national tourney they breeze through every year.

For the record, Monceaux didn't play for a homeschool team. That was Big Russ and it was nowhere near the level of HYCA.

Im interested in seeing what develops here over the next 12-14 months (and noticing that Realist is really trying to be a pain the the "blessed assurance")

Jeremey Moncouex = Brian Faison

Actually, Moncouex was better than Faison. He moved after he lost his starting job to some guy named Blair. Larry Blair, if I'm not mistaken.

alright let's not go bananas. Surely they're both over hyped but one is still playing so obviously could still be good.

The kid is obvioulsy pretty good, but probably not the next Magic Johnson. We don't have anything except a verbal of a very young high school kid. (would rather have it than nothing), When we get the signed LOI, then we can proceed with the build up in earnest.

I am much more comfortable with Sly's report on his current level of competition than someone who lives 1500 miles away and has never seen the kid play.

Hope Ike is treating you well Sly and that you will be ok. Are you still in the Houston area?

I am hunkered down with my family on the NW side of Houston. My parents' home is on a Bayou in Galveston County and they are sweating out this storm at my place. Hopefully I have power all night since I obviously will be up late.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, he plays for the Houston Lynx and Houston Hoops in the summer. Both are major national powerhouse programs. You can't even get a slot on either of those rosters without having some serious game.

RCS Sports wrote:On yesterday, John Caleb Sanders 5'11 cg (HCYA 2010) became the area's first junior to commit to a D1 program. "I like for you to know I've decided to attend Liberty," stated Sanders in a voice message left to us Tuesday afternoon. This is not just huge, but humongous catch for Liberty coaching staff. Now, the lenses comes right into focus as to how big it was for coach Ritchie McKay to ink older brother Jesse Sanders from the 2008 class. This is like one of those buy one get one free deals, or better yet - Two fer Tuesdays. Also, we are convinced that McKay's spiritual beliefs are very much in sync with that of the Sanders family. The siblings led HCYA to back to back Home Schooled National Championships! This past season, John Caleb led the entire state of Texas in scoring amongst sophomores. He played the summer circuit with the Houston Lynx before switching over to the Houston Hoops 16s.

RCS naming its Super 16 Team from a weekend fall tourney in Houston ...
RCS Sports wrote:JOHN CALEB SANDERS 6’0 cg (HCYA 2010) - After watching him this past weekend, it’s easy to understand how this kid led all 10th graders throughout the entire state of Texas in scoring last season. The Liberty Univ pledge scored 28pts vs Chavez HS feat. Jamal Fenton and followed that up with 26pts (7 treys) vs Travis HS feat. Ray Penn.

I took my son to HCYA's game tonight that wasn't far from my house. I'll upload some pics in a bit. I put together a very short video montage of a couple of his late baskets and uploaded them to Facebook (where the quality is better) and to Google:

He dropped in 20 while working primarily as a distributor at the point.

He plays him as well. He's very scrappy and very opportunistic on defense.

That's what I meant by looks exactly like him. I couldn't see his face so I don't know if they really look alike.

Oh it is easy to see the resemblance. Their older brother Thomas was at the game as well. I talked to him afterward about how awkward Saturday will be for him. Their grandmother has Sky Angel so that's where they gather to watch the games.

First off, let me apologize for the quality of the pics. I am using a new camera that I haven't mastered yet. So the pixelization is what it is.

The last shot is of John Caleb with his coach/dad.

Once again, I recognize the picture quality isn't great. But I thought I;d do my best to help people know who this commit from the Class of 2010 really is.

Based on standing next to him, I'd guess 5' 10" or 5' 11" is more accurate. But he's in the ballpark and is just starting his junior season.
