U.S. Sen. Barack Obama will hold a town hall meeting in Lynchburg on Wednesday, according to a late afternoon announcement from his campaign.

The presidential candidate plans to speak on his economic platform during the event, which will start at 6:35 p.m. in the E.C. Glass High School gym. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

Sen. Jim Webb is expected to be among the participants.

Regardless of one's politics, its nice to see a candidate stumping here in town.

I heard a report Obama is likely to name his VP this week. With him visiting VA on Wed., what's the odds his choice for VP is Kaine?

Come on. The Vines center is the obvious choice for a Lynchburg forum.

I wonder who minded allowing overflow parking at the Plaza!

Anybody else find the irony associated with this parking at the Plaza ridiculously funny?

One big issue at Wednesday night's Lynchburg rally -- parking. Originally, the Obama campaign said people could park at the nearby Plaza. It seems the Obama campaign didn't check with Liberty University (web) first and they own the Plaza here. LU police are here right now, making sure that only Plaza shoppers are using this space, the entrances are blocked off. The whole thing has some asking if it's about parking or political differences.
And here is a line you could hear coming out of the mouth of JJ's dad ...
Falwell says they're willing to allow the Obama campaign to lease space. And they'd do the same for John McCain (web|news|bio) . Falwell - "It's true we'd be a little more tempted to help on the other side, but the law says we can't so we feel like we're being transparent about it." We have the IRS regulations right here and it does say that an organization like Liberty cannot qualify for tax-exempt status if it participates in, or intervenes on the behalf of any political campaign. So, basically if someone is wearing an Obama shirt, they probably won't be allowed to shop at the Plaza. Jerry Jr. says this could've been avoided, if Obama's campaign had called ahead to rent the parking here.

Drivers hoping to park at the Plaza and make the short walk to E.C. Glass for the Obama event Wednesday evening were met by blocked entrances and Liberty University police officers directing them instead to City Stadium.

That’s where city officials had hastily arranged shuttle service after learning Wednesday morning that LU, which owns the Plaza, would not allow event parking at the shopping center.

Let's not forget that one of the 3 mentioned as his probable running mate (according to various media sources) visited LU, toured the Law School and spoke in Convo last year.

http://www.liberty.edu/academics/law/in ... ?PID=12879
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine spoke at Liberty University's convocation on December 4. During his visit, he met with several university officials, and Dean Mathew D. Staver gave him a tour of the School of Law.

And again this summer to address the American Legion event:

Side note: Here's some hilarious:roll: accusations levied against LU from some Kaine bloggers:

Lynchburg (0.00 / 0)
E.C. Glass IS the site where Obama will have his town hall meeting tonight. The LU folks, quoted in the News and Advance today, sounded miffed that no one from the Obama campaign called them to use the Vines Center( the largest arena in the area). Huh? Other illuminaries such as Ollie North, Karl Rove, George. W. and McCain have spoken ther...why not Obama? Guess he would rather speak at a TOP Grade public high school rather than a lower tier University with a poorly ranked Law school churning out litigators for Christ.
Lynchburg needs a civic center to augment the beautiful downtown revitalization taking place here.
Right On! (0.00 / 0)
Right on, Martha!
Why in the world would the Liberty Republican Right-Wing-Nut University heirs to Jerry Falwell expect Sen. Obama to have an event on their campus?

The place has never been welcoming to academic freedom and intellectual openness before. Why start now???
Parking snafu in Lynchburg (0.00 / 0)
Liberty University owns The Plaza, a small down and out shopping center near E.C. Glass High. They have refused to allow overflow parking from the Obama event at Glass to park on their property. People need to assemble at City Stadium and ride shuttles over or risk being towed.
VERY TYPICAL behavior of Liberty University and Thomas Rd. Baptist Church. If they don't get their way or don't have attention focused on them...they manufacture an issue and cause harm.A big event like this and they are shut out...so they refocus the attention ( negative or not) on themselves.

Dude, come one, seriously. Adult conversations trying to take place here.

They did say on the radio this morning that the Obama campaign did call the school, the school told them their price, and they never called back. Private property is private property, and there are still businesses trying to make money in the Plaza. I guess this empty visit is more important than Lynchburg's economy for some people.
