I like her so much more than Shawn Johnson. Her uneven routine truly is something else, and her floorroutine has more attitude than Johnson's. Johnson is too all-american girly to me, and Liukin displays greater maturity, competitiveness, and attitude in all of her routines.

Time for an update shuck. That would have been semi-accurate 10 years ago, but gymnasts are now not allowed to compete in the olympics before their 16th birthday. Right now the Chinese team is suspected of having as many as 3 of their 6 girls underage, with falsified passports. The head of the gymnastics federation is blowing it off because it would be a huge mess if they were disqualified.

BTW, after the preliminaries of the all-around, Nastia is second, behind Shawn Johnson, with a Chinese girl 3rd.

since gymnastics is the only olympic event on tv or internet right now, i just saw one of these chinese girls (deng linlin) that there is a controversy over their age. girl is supposed to be 16, i've seen 2nd graders who looked older and more mature than her. it is not humanly possible this deng linlin girl is 16, no way on this earth is she 16.

edit: neither is jiang yuyuan. these two girl must be 2 of the 4 that are alleged to be under 16. their hormones would have to be 100% dysfunctional for them to be this underdeveloped at their supposed age.

However, the release combination that the one chinese girl nailed at the beginning of her bars routine (before falling off the transition to the low bar - ouch!) is one of the best singular moves I've seen on bars in a loooong time. Breathtaking!

I applaud you for keeping the TV/Internet on, even if all there was to watch was gymnastics!

i actually elected to not wath the crap on the internet anymore. they dont have commentators for the stuff on the internet (even if the games is broadcasted on tv they dont hve commentators on the internet) and its extremely hard to get into even a basketball game when all you can hear is the faint noise of the crows, very faint unless your turn you speakers all the way up. it's just not very entertaining to watch the stuff online with no commentary and i have to say nbc really dropped the ball with the webcasts as far as i'm concerned.

not if i'm at home watching the game by myself and don't know who anyone is in any sport other than the notable names like Phelps and Walsh, for example. silent games dont provide much of an atmosphere, and if i'm not familiar with the sport (like water polo), how am i going to learn the rules and terminology? sure i can do research online, but it's a heck of a lot easier to wsee it demonstrated in person than trying to have to convey text into imagery. it would be like going to an LU football game where the fans never cheered or anything, that would make the game a lot less entertaining.

I'm just happy that you're differentiating between sport and entertainment.

The problem is that far too many people think that the entertainment is the sport. The effect that entertainment value, and therefore money, have on any sport is rarely good for the true value of the game itself. The most glaring exmaple I can come up with is WWF, which is completely fake. But an argument could be made that the quality of play in the NBA has diminished, just as its entertainment value has semeingly increased (to some). MLB went through some of it in the past two decades as well, for not being entertaining enough. Then players started juicing, because a home run was more entertaining than getting a single and hitting the runner around.

Money has polluted society, and sport is no different. I'm not arguing or even bemoaning that. I wish people would stop confusing sport and entertainment.
