During the 2008 football season, Liberty University will have eight games broadcast live on television, the most in the history of the program.

This television package includes all seven home football games and the Coastal Carolina road game, which will be a part of the Big South Conference television package on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).

Liberty’s home games will be produced by the Flames Television Network (FTN) and carried on flagship station WTLU, an educational television station on the campus of Liberty University.

FamilyNet, a cable and over-the-air national network serving more than 30 million households, is the new national TV home for the Liberty Flames. FamilyNet will carry the seven-game home football schedule being played by Liberty.

All seven of LU’s home games will be carried live on FamilyNet with a replay at 1 a.m. Eastern and 10 p.m. Pacific each Saturday night, providing Flames football with even more coverage.

Liberty has also increased its presence in the local market by entering into an agreement with Lynchburg’s WSET-ABC 13 to carry all of the University’s live sports programming on its new Digital 2 station. In addition to the seven home football games, WSET will air LU’s home volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games this season.

A few notes:

Gardner-Webb has been moved to a 7pm game.

Last year, FSN-Pittsburgh carried all of Lafayette's games so they may pick up our feed for those games as well.

Elon is not on MASN or anything like that, but if it's for the playoffs, somebody will likely pick it up.

Now you see why I was so excited. If you have AT&T or Verizon fiber then you are golden. And with cable systems like Comcast hemorrhaging customers to fiber this is where we want to be building our relationships.

Some of the Old Hags remember back in the '80s when FamilyNet was part of the OTGH/Jerry Falwell Ministries umbrella back in the original North Campus.

Glad to see they were able to work out the details in time for the fall. But you can expect this new relationship to extend into hoops as well.

I'm a little surprised that no one is talking about:

1. This series of deals makes us the most-televised FCS team in the country this season.
2. The incredible interest and revenue derived from the deal through marketing and advertising
3. The fact that these stations, especially FamilyNet, came to us and paid us for this.

Note: this deal reaches more homes than ESPNU would! I know Sly is happy, because he gets to watch now. But everyone should try looking at this through more than their own prism. It's a pretty big deal!

This is a huge step for Liberty football.

I think JK brings up a great point. The exposure is great but the money factor is huge. We are already working with quite the budget from what I understand but to have this on top of it really pushes us over the top.

when I first heard/read the familyNet thing I did not know what to think, but as I began looking more into it I can see this is a great deal for any FCS school...FCS schools like ourselves are not going to get any kind of huge ESPN deal or anything like that, but a deal like this is the best we could hope for in the position we are in right now and will do nothing but help the growth of our football program...

I would assume with this relationsip beginning with football and things seem to go well with the partnership that this will continue on with basketball season....

The credit goes to the much maligned Kevin Keys. You guys who were hammering him on his attendance totals need to step up and acknowledge when he delivers the goods as well.



I would suggest anyone on cable calling up their local system and telling them that you would love to have FamilyNet adding to your lineup. Most of the big groups like Comcast & Time warner make their decisions nationwide. But many have soem wiggle room at the local level to squeeze in a network as long as the carriage fees aren't significant. In FamilyNet's case it wouldn't hurt the local system's pocketbook at all if they swaped it out for another religious net.

PS - I am a legitimate fan of AT&T U-verse after dealing with the Comcasts, Time Warners and DirecTvs of the world. If it is an option in your nighborhood I heartily suggest you give them a try.

All this TV exposure is another step in the right direction for the LU program. I was hoping that more of our road games would be televised since it is tough for the local fans to travel due to the price of gas. Televising so many home games might keep the locals from coming to the games. Just something to consider. I know that I get MASN on direct TV but not sure if they carry it live or on tape delay. Last year it was tape delay 2 days after. Not sure about Family Net but I will check on it.

I would like to come down for a game providing I could get someone to go with me to share expenses. Kind of expensive with the ridiculous price of gas these days to do it on my own. Maybe I could camp out at Lake Nelson or Crabtree falls and not have to pay high motel charges and get taxed to death. PA Medic are you up to it? I am willing if you are.

Here's your answer:

Last year, MASN carried one Flames Television Network production (the VMI game) on a tape delay basis. A leader in live sports entertainment, MASN is the official partner of the Big South Conference and televises dozens of NCAA Division I football games throughout the season.

This year, the sports cable network will carry four FTN football productions live, as well as one Big South Network game on the road against Coastal Carolina for a total of five live broadcasts on MASN.

Certainly, to go from one game on tape-delay to five live coverages is a big step forward in reognition of what a good partner LU athletics can be.
