You're talking about Matt Hogue from Coastal.
Isn't Hogue the guy that does the radio half-time reports around the Big South? I'm not talking about that guy.

Are you talking about Jeanie Zelasko...the host person with Kennedy? She is brutal...as well as the annoying chick that does Yankees radio...it makes the game listenable.

One of the neat things about XM radio and the MLB TV package is getting to hear the announcers from all over. Uecker even makes a spring training game entertaining.

Perhaps the best entertainment is listening to Ron Santo on Cubs radio...he adds virtually nothing to the broadcast as an analyst...other than cheering and complaining just like any hard core fan would do. It is like being at a game with a buddy.

If I want to watch a game and Joe Morgan is on the mike, I will either:

A/ Mute the sound
B/ Check to see if the game is being played on ESPNdeportes and listen in Spanish.
C/ View the game online through Gameday.
D/ Forget about it. No game is worth watching enough to listen to Joe Morgan.

Favorite announcer: Vin Scully
Vin still does the play-by-play and color by himself for Dodger telecasts.

Maybe Sly can back me up on this one. One of my favorite combo teams is Jim Deshaies and Bill Brown for the Astros telecasts. JD, a former pitcher, is one of the wittiest color guys. They are knowledgeable, fun, and enjoyable to the ear (win or lose).

I dislike any team announcers that are HOMERS regardless of the action on the field. Their team is always the best, all the breaks go to the other team and breaks that their team receives are not acknowledged.

I remember one summer while I was living in Lynchburg, a group of us watched the Cubs on WGN every day that they played. We looked forward to the limited inning schedule that Harry Carey had at the time. Generally, after about 6 pitches, he was too drunk to find his way to the bathroom. He was awful, but it was fun to listen to him.

Harry: Andy Dawson coming to bat for the Cubbies.
Steve Stone: Harry, that's Andre.
Harry: Ahhhhrrrrrr, Who the hell cares?

DeShaies does a solid job interjecting humor without being a rah-rah guy. Bill Brown doesn't do much for me other than play the straight man. He used to do the play-by-play on TV for the Reds back in the '70s and haven't him here in Houston was odd for me at first. He's not much of a personality on or off camera. But that's the analyst's job.

Very funny website. I started following it regularly about a year or so ago. Love the JoeChat transcripts. Joe Morgan is by far the worst announcer in baseball. He may be the wrost in any sport. The fact that it takes him 3 innings to tell a story because he repeats the same crap over and over and over drives me nuts. My hate for him is only rivaled by my hate of Billy Packer in college basketball.

Hate:
JOE MORGAN
Tim McCarver
Chris Berman (the nickname gimmick was fun for about a year or so, it's time to stop)
Hawk Harrelson

Like:
Charlie Steiner
Bob Costas
Jerry Remy
Bob Uecker

All-Timers:
Harry Caray
Mel Allen
Vin Scully
Jack Buck

Anyone remember Chuck Thompson calling O's games?. It was great having Mel Proctor , John Lowenstein and Tom Davis call Orioles games on TV and hearing Thompson on the radio growing up

Fred Manfra and Joe Angel (I think that is his name) are pretty fun to listen to (The Norfolk Tides are the Orioles' AAA team and we get O's games on one of the local sports stations)

The current O's team is good. The Nationals also have a great team with Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler. They do a fantastic post game with a great around the majors and farm system report for scores.

Good
Michael Kay--Yes Network. He's a good announcer and can provide valuable insights.
Vin Scully----I don't get to listen to him often but I like him...probable my favorite.
Joe Angel
Jeff Brantley--He's okay
Harold Reynolds---Espn needs to bring him back
Bob Costas---it's been a while
Jon Miller
Orioles Radio Guys---Tv guys are okay except for Palmer who hates the Yankees.

Bad
Bermann
Morgan
I know they aren't announcers but baseball tonight needs to fire Fernando Vina, Eric Young and Eduardo Perez. Awful.

Kel, what broadcast have you been watching? Palmer has a man crush on the whole Yankees team, but esp. Derek Jeter.

I agree. I know EY is one of Sly's connections...but he struggles. The one new guy who does a good job is Chris Singleton. I always like Buck Showalter on there, too...he has good insight.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but Joe Morgan had the quote of the year last night.

"When they don't outscore the other team, they've had a lot of trouble winning."

Nice.

For the Phils fans out there, I'll toss in Chris Wheeler on my hate list. (which already has Joe Morgan at the top of it, with
Tim McCarver in a close second).

Chris Wheeler, from a broadcaster's point of view, is your worst nightmare when you are trying to call a game, as he always
interrupts the PbP person's call. Picture it: You're doing play by play. The big moment happens, and the doofus to your right
won't shut his TRAP.

I still haven't forgiven him for screwing up Andy Musser's call of Mike Schmidt's 500th home run. (It was televised on
PRISM, old Philly movie/sports network). The following is paraphrased, because I can't remember the actual words, but you
get the idea.

Musser: The pitch from Robinson...(crack)...there's a drive, DEEP LEFT FIELD, and that..

Wheeler: ...YEAH! WOOOOO! ALRIGHT!..

Musser: ...is the 500th career home run for Michael..

Wheeler: ....YEEEEEEEEAAAAHHHH!!...

Musser: ..Jack Schmidt.

You ever wonder why we only hear Harry Kalas's call of that nowadays? It got so bad, that a few years ago, Harry was
threatening to not renew his contract if he had to work with 'Wheels'. It got resolved, but he still pops up every now and then
to ruin some great calls.

I'm pretty sure the guys in the truck are getting tired of Joe and decided to make him look stupid. After Stavinoha was struck out by Lidge with 2 outs in the 9th, Joe decided to make a comment about how it was terrible that he had swung at 3 straight balls that weren't close to the plate and you have to make the pitcher throw a strike. Immediately afterward, the replay was shown of a slider right down the middle. Of course Joe never commented about his mistake. There are probably 5 moments like this in every game he calls and it drives me nuts. I actually enjoyed the broadcast last Sunday night where Steve Phillips filled in for Joe so that's saying something.

I hate that about Miller, and no one else seems to notice it. He butchers every hispanic name. Even when guys clearly go by "Perez" pronounced the American English way, he has to accent it and show off that he knows spanish, apparently...

Even when he says "Jo-hahn Sahn tahn nah" it's annoying, he just butchers names all over the place.

Morgan gets a lifetime pass from me for all of the awesome memories from the BIG RED MACHINE. I was 10 years old. He couldn't have stood taller, along with Perez, Bench, Griffey.... I'm having to stand at attention just typing this post!!!!!!

Uh, I hate to break it to you but while his pronunciations aren't completely perfect he is one of the few who doesn't butcher the names. Latinos respect Gringos who make an effort to pronounce their names properly even if we don't get it quite right.
