While we wait on the season to get underway, I thought I'd once again size up the opponents on our upcoming schedule to better get a feel for what we have in store this fall. Keep in mind this is a work in progress and I'll add to it as time becomes available.

#86 Brandon Dobbins

2007 Stats: 689 Yards and 8 TDs Receiving
Analysis: NGU is doing what is within its power to schedule up as if they intend to step up to Division I when the moratorium is over. In addition to playing us, they have CSU, PC and USD on their schedule in addition to DII powerhouse North Alabama. My guess is much of this scheduling was done as the Crusaders were coming off their 10-2 season in 2006. They received a big time reality check in 2007 despite putting up some eye-popping offensive numbers posting 40.2 points and 509 yards a game. They used a fairly balanced run-pass balance. On the other side of the ball they were a total disaster and we should be able to run & pass at will on them.

Info: Yeah, this is THAT Willie Williams. He's landed in Glenville, WV of all places after transferring from Louisville. In the spring game he posted 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 pass breakup.
Analysis: We've seen the act from these guys before and I would expect similar if not more lopsided results. Willie Williams should make for some interesting fodder for the LUnatics. If we don't begin the season with two dominating victories I'll be surprised.

6' 2" 235 lb Junior Linebacker
2007 Stats: Team-Leading 127 Tackles in 11 Games including 7.5 for Loss + 1 INT Returned 19 Yds & 1 Forced Fumble
Analysis: With a new coaching staff and a ton of new faces it really is tough to tell what the Catamounts will look like this fall. But based on the way they played against SoCon schools like Elon, Wofford & El Cid in 2007, they still have enough talent to be dangerous. The last time we played in Cullowhee was back in 2001 and we were smoked 63-0. The last time we won at a SoCon school was back in 1997 when we won at Kidd Brewer Stadium over a 15th-ranked Mountaineers team in our season finale just a few weeks after we had beaten WCU in Cullowhee. Clearly we haven't been this strong since that 1997 squad but taking this game lightly based on WCU's recent struggles is not wise IMHO.

Analysis: A victory in Youngstown would easily mark the biggest road victory for the program in over a decade. YSU is a perennial powerhouse and Stambaugh Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in FCS football. That said, the Penguins graduated a ton of their top notch seniors and as a result they appear vulnerable. They will be coming off a showdown with NDSU so they will be in jeopardy of a letdown facing the Flames who they have destroyed just a couple of seasons ago.

But the Chants have a ton of question marks. They have no proven quarterback despite some talented young players on the roster. They lost most of their key offensive skill position players from a down 2007 season. Defensively they should be solid but will they able to run with our horses? Other than at QB, they bring back most of their key contributors on both sides of the ball. This sets up as a rather dangerous matchup coming off an emotional trip to Conway the week before.

Analysis: The Blue Hose made quite a splash in their transition year into Division I with victories on the road at CCU & VMI. So I am not ready to dismiss Bobby Bentley in year two. But the team remains undersized and with a leaky defense. So they will likely continue to have a season of ups & downs. It is too bad the price of fuel is so high because it'd be great to have a big crowd of LUnatics to break up the preppy atmosphere down in Clinton.

They have an All-American stud at linebacker to spearhead a defense. And a streaky QB in Doolittle who FlameFans will remember leading the comeback victory for G-W the last time they visited Williams Stadium. Other than a trip to Georgia Tech, the Dawgs have avoided the temptation this season to cash in on guarantee games like they have over the years. That should help them stay healthy into league play.

Analysis: Depending on how the season progresses, this regular season finale could prove to be a virtual playoff game for us. A victory over the Fighting Christians, er, Phoenix might be a deciding factor whether or not we get into the playoffs as an at large or through the new qualification loophole. Elon certainly didn't see the best we had to offer last year. And playing at home we will be in position to turn the tables. Lembo has done a remarkable job turning this traditional SoCon doormat into a Top 10 program. The Riddle-to-Hudgins connection is arguably the best in FCS football. Hudgins has a very likely future playing on Sundays.

11/15 vs. VMI *
Key Returning Players

#1 Conte Cuttino
5' 9" 180 lb Junior Running Back
2007 Stats: Team-High 940 Yds Rushing (5.7 YPC) with 5 TDs

#84 Lynell Suggs
6' 2" 177 lb Senior Receiver
2007 Stats: Team High 75 Catches for 962 Yds with 6 TDs

#95 Adam Soivilien
6' 2" 285 Senior Defensive End
2007 Stats: Team High 70 Tackles including 8.5 for Loss with 3 Sacks & 1 INT
Analysis: This marks SBU's 1st game as a member of the Big South. Since we know so little about the Seawolves it adds some additional intrigue to the matchup. Other than at QB, they bring back most of their key contributors on both sides of the ball. This sets up as a rather dangerous matchup coming off an emotional trip to Conway the week before.

2007 Stats: Patriot Lg Def POY Posted 113 Tackles with 12.5 for Loss + 3 Fumbles Forced & 3 More Recovered
Analysis: The Leopards are picked either 1st or 2nd most preseason Patriot League rankings. They are legitimate threat coming to Williams Stadium. They had a suspect offense for most of 2007 but they matched up very nicely defensively with some quality competition.

Analysis: Here's another team with new faces all over the place. They have several transfers battling for the starting QB position and CSU's outstanding linebacker Jada Ross is finally gone. The new faces are seriously going to have to step up for the team to match its disappointing 5-win season in 2007.

2007 Stats:
Analysis: A coaching change makes predicting what is going to happen in Lexington all the more difficult. Sparky Woods benefits from the redshirting program that Jim Reid began. And he brings back many of the key cogs from last year's team that only won 2 games. But they are probably at least a year or two away from being truly dangerous.

Analysis: The Bulldogs are the team that every year lately it seems they are on the verge of breaking out only to settle for mediocrity.
