Jacob Singleton finished 2nd yesterday in a local tourny....I mention this in this section b/c LU is trying VERY hard to get this kid....the tourny took place at London Downs golf course and he actually lost in sudden death but these are VERY good golfers he was up against, most are older although played college golf at area DI schools.....Coach Thomas actually walked the round with him for support and advice. This is a good Christian kid who is very active in his church.
Maybe someone can gather better info on some of his tourny results

Actually, we are in the midst of torrential rain & flooding and they blew sports completely out of the early evening newscasts. So I had some time to kill this afternoon. But now the owls are on ESPN2 and already up on that ACC squad.

Yeah we are getting hammered with rain and its supposed to get bad again tonight and into tomorrow. Nearly all the creeks & bayous are full or close to it. Most of the flooding today was ont he opposite side of town from me. But if we get the 5-10" of rain tonight they say could come, nowhere is safe.
As for the Allison reference, you must be a weather geek to know about that meteorological anomaly. This is a minor disturbance in comparison to that Tropical Storm that sat right onto top of Houston for a week. What a mess that was.
good looks guys, yeah that's the kid....he could step in right away and make an impact with LU and I think coach realizes that...this kid's great, and I cant say it enough how good of a kid he is off the course as well...I really hope we land him

I've been watching Jacob play for a year now and the kid is absolutely the real deal. Sunday, Chuck Brewer just ran him down. Brewer had a five birdies in six holes run on the back nine and was playing on his home course. Plus Jacob was a 17-year-old going against a 53-year-old with 20-plus years of experience in such events. Everyone out there expressed how impressed they were with Jacob's demeanor during the tournament, and how happy they were to have him out there competing against the vets. Just a great finish to that tournament.
Jacob is still adding length to his game. He doesn't hit it ridiculously far, but he rarely misses golf shots. He's real comfortable frm about 140 yards out because the kid can spin a great 9-iron tight against the pin. He's got a decent short game and putts pretty well too. He has it all, and going against the top amateurs and pros in the state this summer is only going to help his game.
I'm going to catch up with him before the state am again for a notebook, so I'll see what sort of college contacts he's had.

Singleton among locals in VSGA Amateur Championship

Midway through the final round of the Central Virginia Invitational Golf Tournament two weekends ago, 17-year-old Jacob Singleton chatted with playing partner Rodney Laughon about playing in college and beyond.
Laughon, a Boonsboro member who played at James Madison, warned Singleton about the level of discipline needed to play NCAA golf.
In addition to schoolwork, there's daily practice, weight lifting and travel. It can become a grind.
"I think that's what I want to do," Singleton said. If so, he's getting a head start this summer. Singleton, a rising senior at William Campbell High School, is playing a lengthy summer tournament schedule that will prepare him for the rigors of post-high school golf.
In addition to the CVIGT, he's already played in the VSGA Junior Match Play Championship and will tee it up this week at the Homstead's Cascades Course in the VSGA Amateur Championship.
Later, he'll play in the Sun Trust State Open of Virginia in Richmond, which features the state's top amateurs and pros.
"Any time you play in tournaments against better players, it makes you a better player," Singleton said.
Singleton isn't the only local playing in Hot Springs. Chuck Brewer, who beat Singleton on the second hole of a playoff to win his first CVIGT title, will compete, as will Lynchburg's Hunter Russell and Chris Wallace and Forest's Brian Horning.
For Brewer, a substandard performance in May's Fox Puss Invitational gave him motivation to turn his season around.
He shot a three-day 237 (77-78-82) and was relegated to third-flight status.
"After the Fox Puss, I was pretty embarrassed," Brewer said. "I decided to just tear it down and put it back together, basically. I've been hitting a lot of golf balls. I don't like playing bad. I've been working really hard on it."
The State Am is stopping at the Cascades for the 39th time in its 93-year history. It will be the last stop for some time.
In 2007 and 2008, the tournament moves to Lowes Island Club in Potomac Falls. In 2009, Suffolk's Cedar Point Country Club will host. In 2010, the event moves back north to Alexandria's Belle Haven Country Club.
Richmond's John Rollins, who was 55th on the PGA Tour money list heading into last weekend's Booz Allen Classic, won the last State Am in Hot Springs in a rout, beating Norfolk's Troy Ferris 8 and 6. He won again in 1997 before turning pro.
Keith Decker, a four-time Fox Puss champ who won the State Am in 1988 and 1991, enters the event as the state's top-ranked amateur.
He enjoys playing at the Cascades, a shot-maker's course that isn't long off the tee but is plenty punitive to golfers who spray shots off the fairway.
"It's one of my favorites, that's for sure," Decker said. "It suits me fine. I've played a lot up there. I probably play the course 10 times a year, which is a good deal for something that is not my home course. I probably know it a little better than some of these young guys."
There will be plenty of those "young guys" in the field. Of the 120 players, 40 are either collegians or juniors.
