Remember, VMI's students aren't behind the benches and it's one of the toughest places to play in the conference.

So, about the new scoreboard going in at Williams. Anyone know anything about it? Where exactly will it be? Is it on the student's side? That's what it sounds like.

Mansion, I don't often carry my compass anymore, but I could think that the east concession stand would be on the same side as Campus East, so that would be the student side for the old hags to see.

Additional scoreboard will be installed above the east side concession stand.

Would seem odd to have 2, one being above the end zone (where it is now) and one being above a seating section. Seems like the logical place would be to put it next to or on top of the FOC. But there's probably a reason not to do that. Just seems too asymmetrical.

That's a great point...plus you get rid of the conference-mandated opponents section that sits mostly empty on TV...and you also get their fans away from the students. Hmmm....that could work.
I think that has more to do with it then anything....i always thought it was stupid to put the visitors section right next to the student section...especially when there are old grandparents trying to watch their little grandson play....

it does kind of suck...but its not at all the end of the world

The benches being flipped was to enhance the student section really. The Big South requires us to give a certain number of required seats behind the opposing team's bench. Where the benches are now, that's right in the middle of the most passionate fans we have, whether it's our group or other students. Because of this, as someone said on here, mommy would get mad when the student made fun of Little Timmy for messing up and would make a big deal about it. Mommy got mad because our students stood and she couldn't see Little Timmy miss his free throw or something like that. Instead of making the students change and telling us to stop what we do, they moved the benches to the other side. This does a couple things:

a) It allows students to fill in the bottom of the three sections right next to the court. Ten rows full of students spread among three sections sounds better than 30 rows full in one section and gaping holes on the sides.

b) It looks better on tv because you only see the first ten rows or so anyways and if they're full, we look full.

c) It gets whiny parents and judgmental fans off of our backs for being rowdy and saying we're horrible Christians for cheering against their team.

d) It eliminates confrontations with other teams students. No matter what, students from other schools like to start crap when they come here. I don't know why, they just do. They think taunting our fans actually does something instead of taunting our players.

Yes, not being behind the benches will suck. However, Proto has a great point. If we can get alumni like him, like RocketFan, like LUconn - alumni who were like the LUnatics when they were in school - to buy the seats over there then we start to create an even better atmosphere. It gives them a reason to come and sit on that side. Fans like those guys will do some of the same chants and cheers that we do. What it's going to take to get the Baptist side cheering is for alumni like those guys to do it. As more of us who cared about athletics during undergrad graduate and move to the Baptist Side of the stadiums, we'll see less grouchy old men and more people who want to help the atmosphere.

Lastly, in regards to how the media is going to work. The game will still be taped from the side it normally is. The scorers table will obviously flip sides. The scorers will sit on the Baptist Side along with the tv crew. Ray and Scar are still broadcasting from that side. Print media (aka Chris Lang) and radio (Jerry Edwards) will move over to the student side.

Super, if I understand this correctly, they are putting our students on one side (the same side as last year) but moving the benches and the other team's fans to the Baptist side. Is that correct?

Yeah. There's absolutely nothing moving except the benches and visiting teams' fans.

So the TV cameras are staying in the same place? That means they will be shooting over the heads of the coaches and benches?

I have only seen that a couple of places and I always thought it was kind of weird.

Won't it be hard for the people broadcasting too? Since the press row will be on the opposite side of the camera. On the TV the action will be going in one direction but what they will be watching on the court will going in the opposite direction.

I may be reading it wrong but this is what it sounds like.

New seats confirmed for the Vines Center (with pics):
The University will be purchasing 200 premium seats to replace the yellow and red chairs currently found in Section 120 of the arena. These seats will be blue and have a red and white embroidered Liberty Flames logo on the chair back. The cushioned, Marquee model seats feature a 24-inch seat, cup holder and wood accents. The section will become premium seating at all home basketball games.

In addition, the seating in Sections 118 through 122 will be removed and replaced with Irwin Citation chairs. These seats will become the reserved section at home basketball contests and will red with a blue and white embroidered logo. Like the premium seats, the chairs will have a cup holder.

The rest of the seating in the Vines Center will be replaced with a new plastic seat in dark blue with the Liberty logo embossed on it. These seats are considered to be more durable than the current general admission seating.
All new seats???

Yep, the fences are down, the trees have been chopped up (don't tell the treehuggers, I mean environmental science majors, at LC that), the nets have been taken down and put into storage, the team room will soon be moved and they will be chopping up the asphalt shortly after that.
