Who are your favorite baseball announcers? I was watching baseball on FOX today and it got me thinking about the different ones.

My favorites:

Don Sutton - not because I'm a lifelong Braves fan and he worked at TBS forever, but because he generally does a great job. It's because of Sutty I can stand to watch the Nats on MASN. He has an advantage over national network broadcasters because he covers one team - but he knows whats coming from the pitcher before he throws the ball and knows what the batter is looking for. He's a hall-of-fame pitcher so he has that intuition that makes for good analysis.

Jon Miller/Joe Morgan - they've been together on ESPN for quite a while now - they just seem to work well with each other - and Joe Morgan has the same insight as Don Sutton has.

Leo Mazzone - I've only heard him broadcast one game, but he seemed to be having a lot of fun. He laughs at almost everything and makes a lot of little jokes in between pitches... he also can call what's coming.

Least favorites:

Tim McCarver - I just feel McCarver thinks he knows everything... not just about baseball, but about everything. To me he's kind of like Madden - always stating the obvious and great at analysis after-the-fact of the play, unlike Sutton.

Mark Grace - horrible jokes, always talking about himself.

Ron Darling - he's on TBS.... just does not have the voice for broadcasting. Chip Carey carries TBS baseball.

Joe Morgan is by far the worst in baseball.

Really? Jon and Joe are terrible. They just bother me, a lot. Joe isn't insightful to me... and Jon's need to butcher every Hispanic name he comes across is completely annoying.

I can't even think of a favorite. I would have to say I like the way that the FSN Ohio guys handle things, Jeff Brantley and Thom Brennaman are pretty tolerable.

I would rather listen to Oprah call a baseball game than Tim MacCarver.

I really like:
Marty Brenneman (Reds)
Vin Scully (Dodgers)
Bob Ueker (Brewers)
Mike Patrick (ESPN)
Jack Buck (Cards)
Erin Andrews

Mike Patrick is really good. I enjoyed his broadcasting in the CWS... except for the moment he stopped talking -shudder- Orel Hershiser Started talking. He's awful.

No way... I love Miller and Morgan.

Look at the big gleaming head.... beautiful. Just beautiful.

Remember that show 3rd Rock from the Sun? They would channel their alien leader "Big Giant Head". I always pictured him as Jon Miller.

Still love those guys!

I enjoyed Marty Brennaman and Mike Patrick actually became one of my favorites while I watched the CWS. Vin Scully is one of my influences as a broadcaster and so is Jack Buck (I enjoy his son Joe as well). Call me naive but I dont have any broadcaster that I necessarily hate.

Don't like:
Chip Caray read this and see why he stinks
Joe Morgan, because he's a) wrong in his analysis and b) adamant about his position
Suzyn Waldman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdtn0Z4o8cM
Chris Berman (it's called a baseball, Chris, not a football. And not everyone needs a stupid nickname. And get a new home run call other than 'back, back, back').

Like:
Bob Uecker
Bob Costas
The Late Jack Buck
Vin Scully

Doesn't Berman only do the home-run derby?

No, he does some mid-week games and fills in for Miller/Morgan. I know earlier this year he did a Dodgers/Cubs Monday Night game.

I will say that after listening to highlights of the Yankees game today I do not enjoy Jon Sterling...some of the things he comes up with make me go "wha?"

While I agree with the above analysis, I just can't bring #8 in your roster but number one at second base Little Joe into the discussion. Most of you guys have no idea how awesome he was as a player. Those of us who grew up in Cincinnati in the midst of the Big Red Machine will never forget.

That said, these guys make my skin curl due to their obnoxious arrogance ....

Joe Buck
Any of the Carays
Tim McCarver
Chris Berman
Steve Stone

On the positive side even though all are way past their prime ...

Marty Brenneman (Thom will never be his father)
Vin Scully
Milo Hamilton

Joe Morgan is a moron. He can't pronounce half of the players' names and tries to predict the managers' next moves and is wrong 90% of the time. WHM is the only person I have ever heard of that acutally likes him.

Hawk Harrelson, the color guy for the white sux, is also absolutely terrible. I can't wait until "he gone."

Hard to get worse than Vin Scully, I have been listening ti him for 45+years. A classic from the other night, 1-2 count on the batter, pitch is thrown high and inside, batter swings and foul tips the ball. Scully says, "the batter just swung at ball 4". Happens all the time and he is almost as big a homer as Woody Durham. Used to watch the game on TV and Scully on the radio, and didn't know you were watching the same game. Morgan and McCarver a close second.

On the likes side, my favorite team of all time was Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale, before the time of most of you. I like Jack Buck and his father as well. Marty Brenaman is also very good.

I can do worse than Vin Scully - but it's not baseball - guy by the name of Jerry Edwards... flames sports network. But he's nowhere as annoying at the guy from Winthrop (I hate those Big South commercials that has him in it.)
