How many of those guys did you see play?

Luvon Sneed was a banger, but really wasn't very productive til the second half of his senior year.
I assume from the smileys you know that vickers and Gomes weren't big guys, although I believe Vickers holds a lot of our rebounding records at about 6'5 200.
Steve Isaacs was 6'8 and about 215 (thin if not skinny)
I will predict that by the time they graduate both McMasters and Smith will be about as big as Sarchet. I think he went about 230.

Here's what you get when you recruit a player for his "beef"

Armon Jones
Lamont Winters

I feel like our staff is recruiting BASKETBALL PLAYERS, and that suits me just fine.

True centers who played for LU (In chronological order)

George Sweet 6'8 and about 250 back in the pioneer days
Cliff Webber 6'8 240
Mike Coleman 6'8 240
Julius Nwosu 6'9 240
Peter Aluma 6'9 260 as an overweight senior. He arrived on campus at maybe 215 soaking wet. He was SKINNY. Best playing weight about 240 as a junior.
Jeremy Day 6'9 215 Only played 1 year due to back injuries and was not a banger, but was a true post player.
Sarchet/Sneed Really more PFs, but we'll count them. Sneed was about 250 as a senior.
Alex McClain 6'8 235 also more of a PF, but could certainly get it done inside in the BSC.

That's a total of 9 in 36 years, and some of those are really borderline.

Are there guys out there who are 6'10 280 who can play and will come to LU? I believe there will be in the near future, and I'm pretty sure McKay and co. will welcome them with open arms. In the mean time I have a strong feeling we will get a lot more production out of McMasters and Smith than we did from Winters and Jones.

Otherside of the state so I don't have a clue. We played them my senior year and lost to them by about 10. Some of 1A schools down in Miami usually beat up on the best of the 6A and the rest of the state like Northwest Christian or Champagnat. Bannister's ACD usually kept up with the best of them as well.

Aluma was easily the best big man we've ever had and he was NOT a banger. That was really the only drawback to his game. He settled for the baby hook way too often.

Not on the boards, true, because he focused so much on blocking shots. He was a load on offense, and you couldn't be more wrong about the baby hook thing. he scored most of his points on the same move, getting position on the left side of the lane and then extending his ridiculously long right arm for a pass and turning to the baseline for a layup/dunk or a little 3-5 foot jumper. He would have been even harder to stop if he had worked more on going across the lane for a hook or taking it to the rim.

Our big men are going to need a lot of weight to hold their own against Cruz Daniels! He's a beast!

But he had HEART. Anyone who comes back into the game with a turban on his head from a gash is my kind of player.

Exactly Fumble, and of course that is one of those things we won't know about our recruits until they are tested in the D1 fires. Given the same basketball skills, I'll take heart over beef any time though. I do like the fact that Austin Smith was a WINNER in HS, leading his team to the state title with an MVP performance. IMHO that kind of thing is the best indicator we have on intangibles until they actually face college competition. AAU performance can help measure talent, but laying it on the line for your school is heart.

Lefty, if Cruz Daniels had half Soro's heart he WOULD be a beast (even though he's skinny).

I'm not wrong and I don't think you know what I'm talking about when I say "baby hook". He never powered to the basket and he only dunked when there was nobody between him and the bucket. If he'd ever learned to put his shoulders and elbows onto a few guys he'd have been unstoppable.

I don't know what YOU MEAN by a baby hook RTF, but I know what a hook shot is, baby or grownup. A right-handed hook is shot moving to your right, with the opposite (left) shoulder facing the basket. Peter very seldom shot moving to his right. He shot layups and short jumpers. If you meant that you think he should have dunked the ball more, that's what you should have said.

As far as the general idea of his being a physical player on offense ....... guess who holds every LU record for free throws attempted and made? And he should have shot even more. Opponents mugged him constantly, and a lot of it never got called (especially in BSC games). It's easy to say he should have put his shoulders or elbows into opponents, but those are called offensive fouls, and he had to deal with that all the time. Post play during the Aluma era in the BSC was a poor man's version of Shaq's heyday in the NBA. Opponents were overmatched and tried every trick in the book to stop him. You could call a foul either way on every posession and a lot of stuff didn't get called that should have been and a lot got called that shouldn't have.

As far as whether I know what I'm talking about, all I can say is I may not be a basketball expert, but I saw Peter's first game, his last game, and about 80 or so in between in person.

Agree OldFlame, I saw almost all of Peter's games was very stong inside and was a banger. Never saw him shoot a hook shot that I remember. Was more of a drop step jump shot from the baseline when he wasn't hammering it home inside.

I never said you didn't know what you were talking about. When I said baby hook, I meant that little one-handed toss at the basket he used to do from 4-6 feet. Yes, he got hacked all the time but he was hacked low before he could get the ball up. He never learned to use his elbows and shoulders for leverage -- I wasn't talking about plowing through the defender, duh! -- and he hardly ever had a genuinely contested shot yet he didn't ever really press his size and reach advantage on the offensive end. He used it for defense and rebounding but not for scoring which is what we're talking about in this thread.
