Anyone watching on CBS? Interesting stuff. The white dude's ears are about the size of baseballs.

I watched the last few fights ... but this wasn't UFC. It was the upstart Extreme FC.

Kimbo learned a lot of lessons and now everyone will be looking to get him to the ground as soon as possible.

The fight before was really entertaining as basically a boxing match with a few roundhouse kicks thrown in. It was too bad they ended the bout on a poked eye.

All said and done it was a rather nice way to introduce the sport to much of America.

UFC/MMA = the next WWE: A bunch of morons beating each other up in a ring of some sort while a bunch of trailer park trash comprises a heavy portion of its viewers and participants.

You just proved yourself to be an idiot.

a) MMA stuff is being shown on network television and is consider a sport.
b) MMA stuff is not fixed.
c) MMA is the fastest growing sport in America.
d) People who would normally pay $50-60 for a boxing PPV are now paying that for MMA fights.
e) Trailer park trash a heavy portion of the viewers? Check the crowd of these big fights and look at all of the celebrities there.

ps...SJ why are you calling him an idiot, don't you know that is just reserved for a certain new poster!! come on man!

You know what else has been shown on network tv? Jerry Springer Show and Cops - two of the best shows at highlighting trailer park trash. One of MMA's most well known fighters - Kimbo Slice - is the epitome of trailer park trash: he works for an online pornography website called inthevip.com and he isn't even one of the performers, just a body guard. A body guard for an online porn site. Sounds like trailer park trash to me.

Claiming MMA as the fastest growing sport is complete BS. Lacrosse has been tabbed as the fastest growing, so has NASCAR, weight lifting, table tennis, bull riding, and countless others just in the past 5 years, so why should we believe you in saying MMA is the fastest growing? And what do you use as your standard for calling it fastest growing? If you go by participation in the sport, then nothing can compare to lacrosse right now. Courtesy of USLacrosse.org "Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Youth participation in the sport has grown over 500% since 1999 to nearly 250,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 200,000 high school players. Lacrosse is also the fastest-growing sport over the last six years at the NCAA level, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are more than 500 college club programs, including nearly 200 women's teams that compete at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates level."

Try doing research and providing facts instead of spreading propaganda that MMA tells you, that's what idiots do and I don't think you want to be an idiot now do you?

I'm agreeing with SJ here. On a global scale, MMA is growing exponentially faster than Lacrosse, and its not just popular with the trailer trash crowd that watches WWE and gets fat off of cheap beer. And just because high schools don't offer it as a sport, doesn't mean its not growing just as fast...I'm sure if you check out many of the martial arts places, you will find a renewed interest in them because of MMA.

believe what you will about the trailer park trash stuff...I don't even like MMA...but the money UFC brings in every year is flat out ridiculous. I haven't seen or heard the numbers for 2007, but in 2006 they grossed well over 200 million dollars...not sure when the last time lacrosse has every brought in that kind of money..I don't like MMA...but I don't think it is a trailer trash sport...and it is a very fast growing sport....to deny that would be pretty darn stupid in my opinion

Regardless, I think it's another one of those fad things like the WWE/WWF/WCW was back in the 90s and early 2000s. Sure it is still wildly popular, but nothing like it was back then.

I never denied it wasn't growing very fast, I said to claim it as THE fastest growing is BS. Like I said, what you call growth depends on what your measuring stick is: participation, tv ratings, money, etc. However, to say MMA is THE fastest growing sport is flat out ignorant because there are other sports, such as lacrosse, that blow it out of the water in other measures of growth like participation. And any one single lacrosse league (such as MLL, NLL) may not have produced over 200 million dollars on its own, but I have to say the entire lacrosse industry is gigantic in dollar terms. It's NCAA Tournament is also the second highest attended NCAA Tournament - even greater than basseball despite being a much smaller tournament - behind the mens bball tournament obviously, so there is quite a bit of money generated there as well. Just the equipment alone makes that industry worth millions of dollars. How much, I don't know since I can't get financial figures for all the different lacrosse companies out there...

Seriously do you have friends, because you are one of the most closed minded people on this earth. It explains a lot about your life frankly and it blows my mind how YOU can't see it. Please show me a valid publication in the last five years that has said weightlifting, table tennis was the fastest grownig sport. Just like was proven about Clay Bucholz of the red sox, your an exaggerator and it just keeps getting worse with you. You calling someone and idiot is pretty lame considering your already expounded upon Job and Dating situation. Your own research says " one of the fastest growing" and sites the fastest NCAA sport in the last 10 years. MMA isn't an NCAA santionced sport so your stat is worth about as much as you resume in this arguement, little to nothing.

MMA does NOT = WWE...

however, KimBLOW IS trailor trash... excuse me, thats demeaning to those in the world that happen to live in tindominiums, GHETTO trash. KimBLOW does NOT = good, or even decent MMA fighter. KimBLOW DOES = overhyped (thank you EXC, ESPN The Magazine and stupid internet noob fanboys who watch youtube), overpaid, underskilled, non-technical wanna-be fighter

and now a few notes from last nights bastardization of the sport i know and love so well.

The Robby Lawler/Scott Smith stoppage was complete BS. He gets 5 min to recover, not whatever that laughable excuse for a doctor decides. He's the fighter, not her. (Yes, i said her... the UFC had a problem with a female doc back when they had dr. margaret goodman from the NSAC. Females = overly cautious.) Scott is a professional and has been in the ring more than she has (quite willing to bet it was the first fight she'd ever been working)

The Gina Carano/Kaitlin fight stoppage was complete BS. Oooooh, she got a mouse under her eye. She could still see. Way to let her not fight and pull out a win for the golden girl who has missed weight 2 fights in a row. Bottom line is Kaitlin is a fighter, not a baby doll. She's not goin to break. Way to be sexist there and decide that she obviously can't decide on her own if she can see and continue.

The KimBLOW/Thompson stoppage was quite possibly the worst I've EVER seen. Dan M. should not EVER ref another fight again. Ok, so his cauliflower ear got spilt open, cool. (He should've drained it first, but thats neither here nor there) The blood wasn't in his eyes, nor was it a danger. KimBLOW is on nowhere NEAR the quality fighter to be the main event on ANY pro show, let alone one on primetime tv. He makes everyone else in the sport look bad. EXC should be investigated for putting in the fix on this one. YES, it was that bad. The announcer's went out of their way to try and make KimBLOW look and sound legit, when any halfway educated fan knew he wasn't. They fed him a hand-picked opponent who's record over his last 8 fights was 2-6!!! And then pulled the old fixeroo when it looked like KimBLOW was about to lose. (Personally I want to know how he gets elbowed in the head for 2 min at the end of the second round and doesn't have a cut or even any swelling on him? hmmm... my grandma can elbow harder than that...)

EXC has taken a giant step backwards for the sport. Thanks a lot guys. Way to screw-up (putting it politely) what should have been a no-lose situation. As far as Lax being the fastest growing sport, please. Let's look at participation in MMA. In Lynchburg, at just ONE gym, there are roughly 170 people training. Will all of them compete in the ring, nope, not even close. BUT the fact is that everyone that trains is interested in the sport, and by training, they are still participating in the non-competitive side. There aren't 170 people in lynchburg playing Lax, i can guarantee you that.

and yes, its real mature to compare mma with jerry springer and cops...moron. unfortunately, thanks to ESPN Magazine's eforts to make a quick buck and highlight ghetto gold, they skipped over the hundreds of other more deserving ighters they could have spotlighted. Several MMA fighters have masters degrees. Joe Lauzon is an IT Network guru. Most are quite good businessmen at parlaying their name recognition into dollars in their bank account via gyms, clothing, sponsors, etc...

There is a HUGE Ammy circuit for MMA. It's nothing for an event to have 40 guys sign up to compete. But since we're talking about only pro events here, lets see... how many pro events does LAX have? or better yet, how many pro events has anyone on here ever heard of? how many people on here can name even 1 pro lax team? how many on here can name 1 pro mma fighter? (and no, KimBLOW doesn't count).

Let's include ammy fights for a second and compare MMA and Lax. Most weekends have 1-2 events per STATE where MMA is legal. Every weekend of the year minus christmas. Certainly LAX doesn't. Almost every town in America has SOMEBODY who trains MMA. If there isn't somebody in the town, there usually is within a 45 min drive. Lax compares? PLEASE! LAX is a sport that is confined primarily to the NE part of the country. Don't get all excited because it is shown at midnight on some specialty sports channel you have to order as part of like tier 4 of your cable tv package.

Dont get me wrong. I'm all for guys running around smacking each other with their metal poles trying to play with a little white ball. (TTL you getting excited yet?) I think it's like hockey on grass. Cool. But lets get real, who's gonna want to watch that when you can watch two people fight it out in a cage (or a ring)? MMA wins for the same reason football beats LAX. MEN like violence. We're wired that way. (Well most of us anyways... I'm sure TTL will chip in about how he abhores it)

Lets look at something else. How many people do you see wearing LAX t-shirts out and about? Certainly not as many as you've seen TapouT, Affliction, Sinister, Sprawl or any of a number of different MMA shirts. Lets see, 250,000 youth competitors in LAX. cool. do you know how many PPV buys the UFC gets for every event? please...

http://www.mmapayout.com/2008/12/ufc-pa ... -2007.html

UFC 66 (Chuck vs. Tito) did 1,050,000 buys. Yes, thats over 4 BUYS FOR EVERY KID INVOLVED IN LAX! or, 5 buys for every HS LAX player. Do you know why LAX will always be a small time participation sport? because the majority of people cant afford the equipment and the gas to take the kids to practice.

Normally SJ and I find ways to disagree with each other, however, he is VERY correct in his analysis. (WELL DONE SJ!)

a) MMA stuff is being shown on network television and is considered a sport.
b) MMA stuff is not fixed.
c) MMA is the fastest growing sport in America.
d) People who would normally pay $50-60 for a boxing PPV are now paying that for MMA fights.
e) Trailer park trash a heavy portion of the viewers? Check the crowd of these big fights and look at all of the celebrities there.

Considering MMA was all but dead in 1996 (Thanks to John "Special Interests - What have you done for me lately? - I was a POW vote for me!" McCain), the fact that it has come back as big as it has is nothing short of amazing. (And yes i hate John McCain with a passion and think its a travesty that he is the best that the 'conservative' side can do this year - granted he's a darn sight better than the other two worthless alternatives... but that's not saying much at all)

So to sum it up:

SJ has TKO'd the Correct
flamesbball84 ha taken one too many lax sticks to the head

by the way, lax is EXPLODING down south and out west. so that just proves how IGNORANT you are of the sport matshark. it's not just a NE sport anymore. tons of colleges have added the sport just in the past 5 years and the number of high schools that have added it is dwarfing the number of colleges that have added it. hell, Liberty is even adding women's lax. so why go research lax next time before spouting your ignorant filth on here...

I hope you people on here aren't very representative of the entire LU student population, because I sure as hell won't be recommending LU to any of my colleagues at work who have children if that's the case.

It is not EXPLODING down here. The only schools that even consider playing it are your 4A schools and even then, most people's first year playing lacrosse is their freshman year. It's getting bigger, but it's by no means exploding.

well the sport itself is fine...but people who are hardcore fans and view themselves as superior give the sport a bad name because of how they act...the casual fans aren't that way...its just annoying...

Also, with lacrosse, as with soccer in the US, it's the upper-middle class sport and 75% of America can't afford to play it.

Yeah, it's ONLY grown 500% since 1999, that's nothing short of exploding. If any other sport were growing by that much it would be considered exploding. Idiot.
