So what's the deal with the new coach? Are we having trouble finding someone or are we waiting for something else to happen.

I have heard nothing. It’s weird it’s been this long without any rumors come my way. Why don’t we start our own guessing?

CHL suggested Dell Curry and will never hear the end of that one. What about more realistic options. Perhaps Stephon Leary? Is he currently coaching anywhere? Maybe Rice’s former coach.

I think Willis Wilson would be a great choice, and it could happen if he doesn't get a head coaching gig soon. He would fill a somewhat similar niche as Layer having head coaching experience.

My thoughts are, I would be surprised to see anybody hired that was formerly associated with LU. So I'm not really counting on any former players or coaches. And I think most of McKay's contacts are out west. So maybe he's having a tough time finding a guy he likes that would move out this way? Although he did coach at Queens for a while so I'm sure he does know some guys out here. I don't know.

Willis would bring some serious recruiting contacts and also help us schedule more guarantee games. He seems to be well liked by nearly everyone in the coaching ranks. That said, I'd be surprised if it happens. I kind of expect him to wind up at Texas Southern or even HBU.

Why not? It makes sense to me McKay would want to establish a connection with Liberty’s history.

Why would he want to do that?

I wonder if we're not just waiting for the new fiscal year to start to hire a new assistant.

He may not, but many times coaches without previous ties to the school try to make a connection with some of the past players/coaches of that school. It may not be as big a deal here though.

I think John would always consider an option to return to the burg.

I think Rice's former coach would be good for us, you know, if we can't land Dell Curry that is!

I'm guessing your suggesting someone who was assistant to Oliver Purnell who previously coached Dayton and now coaches at Clemson.

Ron Bradley?

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

He is on Purnell's staff at Clemson, but I don't think he was ever at Dayton.

Based on that info the 2 possibilities would be Frank Smith and Shaka Smart.

Yeah, I was thinking Frank Smith but I don't know why he'd leave an asst job at Clemson for one at LU. Guy's been with Purnell since Radford.

I remember Frank as a player. He could seriously deal.

Did Scar ever play against him? (Paging Denver)

It’s someone who’s not on the Clemson staff.

I have scoured the internet trying to find the coaching staff of the 02-03 Dayton championship team but even the Media guide doesn't tell you.

Here's a couple options:

Ron Jirsa – Jirsa was the senior assistant coach at Dayton under then-head coach Oliver Purnell for four seasons. Currently an assistant at Minnesota.

Pete Strickland - Assistant Coach on Oliver Purnell’s staff at the University of Dayton from 1994 to 1998. Currently an assistant at NC State; was head coach at Coastal.

Bill Comar - He came to Xavier after four years on Oliver Purnell’s staff at the University of Dayton, including two seasons as an assistant coach (1998-99 and 2000-01) and two years as the Coordinator of Basketball Operations (1997-98 and 1999-2000). Comar was at UD beginning in November, 1997, and was involved in all aspects of the Flyer basketball program. Currently is Director of Basketball Ops at Xavier for the past 7 years.
