A greedy traitor, cartoonish villains, cheesy humor (and at times, cheesy acting), unrealistic action sequences, finding ancient relics only to lose them... what kind of movie is this?!
It's an Indiana Jones movie, and I loved it. All the elements were there, and although it didn't seem to "pop" like the other films, I think I'll like it even more as I watch it again and again. I wasn't crazy about the idea of Indy getting hitched, but I think it served to drive home the fact that the '80s (and the '30s) are gone, and things will never be the same.
The ending seemed to allude to the rumored sequels (Ford's three-picture deal and LaBeouf's four-picture deal). Mutt isn't quite ready to don the fedora, and Indy's got plenty of fight left in him. Even with the gray hair and a few slight miscalculations along the way, Dr. Jones/Ford is still in great shape. I like that they didn't go full force with the aging thing like Stallone did in Rocky Balboa, for instance. It's not hard to believe that Ford has two more Indy films in him.
Perhaps what I like most is that it didn't even come close to sullying the franchise. It took some risks while staying true to what makes the series work. Some might not like the alien/Area 51 tie-in, but I thought it was a new and interesting direction to take, and I loved character development of Indy, with his military background and connection to the Roswell crash. I wish Cate Blanchett's character would have been more fleshed out and less one-dimensional (although I have to admit, I thought the Russian getup was kinda hot). John Hurt's "Ox" is a fantastic successor to Denholm Elliot's Marcus Brody, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in the next film if there is one.
Bottom line: highly recommended for Indy fans, maybe not so much to newcomers. Watch the first three films first, then wait about 20 years before seeing this. It will be worth it.
