LUconn is correct:
Phil Keaggy, born March 23, 1951, is a guitarist and vocalist. He was raised in a small farmhouse in Hubbard, Ohio with nine brothers and sisters, and began playing guitar at age ten on a Sears Silvertone guitar. In spite of the fact he is missing half of the middle finger on his right hand due to a childhood accident involving a water pump, Keaggy is considered by many to be one of the best guitarists in the world. He is frequently listed as one of the top fingerstyle guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers' polls.

The Question: "Who is the best guitarist in the world?"

Rumors have followed Keaggy for years that Jimi Hendrix had supposedly named him as his answer to the question Johnny Carson asked him, "who is the best guitarist in the world?" while making an appearance on The Tonight Show Another version of the story goes something like, "Jimi, how does it feel to be the world's greatest guitar player?" To which supposedly Jimi replied, "I don't know, you'll have to ask Phil Keaggy!" which according to some was from an interview in Rolling Stone or Guitar Player Magazine. Sometimes, the rumor is that it was Eric Clapton, or that it was on the Dick Cavett show. A recent variant has it that it was Eddie Van Halen on Letterman who was asked the question. During live performances, Keaggy has mentioned it but personally thinks the rumors are untrue. However, due to the fact that many of these shows did not keep archives of many of their early shows, it is nearly impossible to either confirm or disprove the rumors completely. Some fans have claimed to have seen the show in question, or read the interview but to date, no one has presented a tape, a magazine article or any kind of evidence to confirm it. Phil was asked this at one of his guitar clinics he held in California a few years ago and his answer was simply, "I don't think there is anything to it at all. I doubt that Jimi ever heard me play as he had died in England before I recorded with Glass Harp at his Electric Ladyland Studios in New York City. Someone told me years ago that when asked that question he replied, "Phil Keaggy is the shortest guitarist in the world," which is more believable." Snopes article regarding the "Tonight Show" appearance.

yeah, I read that on Snopes.com earlier today and they said that the rumor was false. But really, it sounds like it's unknown. I guess it seems unlikely but there's still no definative answer.

how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? You'll find that answer with your last question

It probably varies based on amount of saliva and lick consistancy.

Someone remind me to kick him when I'm down there. Or have SJ do it, he's bigger.
Hey, its the only way they would have let me do the show back a couple years ago. Have a sense of humor bro. Besides I dated myself just as much as I did you with that

WOW Not sure what idiot said that "If you like PearlJam youll like Steve Taylor" Two different genre's. (Although I like both artists)
As for the question: Yes whatever your first "exposure" to Christian Rock that you either had or liked. My first was to the Catherdral Quartet and Bill Gaither Trio, although I could never figure out why there were more then three, stunted my math growth for years.

Good stuff!

it might of been another band...but it was some modern rock band that he compared him to and it was deplorable...

Steve Taylor's Chagall Guevara definitely was modern and defeinitely did not suck. If you were comparing Pearl Jam to "I Want to be a Clone" you were inevitably disappointed. Although they keyboard riff from that song gets stuck in your head for decades whether you like it or not.

i wonder who bought all their albums then?

"In 1993, Pearl Jam's second album Vs. set an all time record for copies sold in the first week of release (950,000)."

"Pearl Jam's third album, Vitalogy, was released in 1994, with a vinyl version released two weeks before the CD and cassette versions. The CD became the second quickest selling in history, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week."

Posers, schmosers. 'Vs' was one of the best albums of all time. On the other hand, I think Pearl Jam should send out to every living human being a handwritten apology for 'Vitalogy'.

oh whatever. they weren't soundgarden but they were good. its not our fault there were plenty of retards who thought so as well. I accept your position on pearl jam though because your music prowess is only 1 of 4 other peoples i respect.

VS, Ten, and Vitalogy are so full of good songs its unbeleivable...yeild and later albums missed the mark somewhat but they were still tolerable.

but back to christian music? isnt' MWS the U2 of Christian music? as "hey you were great back in the day but its time to bow out" he was also a bit late on the "HURRY THROW TOGETHER A PRAISE AND WORSHIP ALBUM THEY ARE BUYING THEM UP LIKE HOTCAKES!!" craze?

I saw Pearl Jam on either MadTV or SNL this last week and they were unbelievably bad. But it appears Eddie Vedder is still so self-involved he has no idea how bad he is.

There are so many great Steve Taylor lyrics ... he was the king of sarcasm.

Steve Taylor - The Christian Answer to Weird Al
If you have iTunes, just click this link -- http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... d=79282244 and click Subscribe.

Otherwise, you can 1) download each show individually from the website (just click on the link in each post) or 2) get a podcast-catching program like Juice and copy the feed address into it. Juice is pretty easy to use -- it's what I used when I first heard of podcasts.

I got my iPod originally to listen to CDs, but I use it more for podcasts. I'd say 2/3 of the memory on my Nano is taken up by podcasts.

liked Michael W.-remember argyl sweater, flew to one of his concerts while at LU (boyfriend's roommate piloted); Steve Taylor- "unfolding today, a miracle play this Indiana morn; a father, he sighs she opens her eyes, their baby boy is born; we don't understand, it's not like we planned, the doctor shakes his head; abnormal they cry and so they decide this child is better dead...believers are few...I bare the blame....
I also rememberMeltdown , Lifeboat (situation ethics), cute cathedral
Didn't like Petra, Stryper...left those types to my sister
Mylon LeFevre, DeGarmo and Key I heard but can't remember
Went to a Carmen concertabt. 14 yr. ago; NewSound '85 at Gordon??-David Edwards "Dreams, Tales and Lulabies with book too
5 yr.ago concert at Loon Mt. in NH- intro. to music of Nicole C. Mullen; also ? Enricho?-Michael W helped her (Staci??)
You're stretching my memory on some of this; a church in Cheshire, CT does a coffee house monthly; I went once, read some poetry, and listened to Ten Cubits Wide (from Waterbury area)

Yes, which was sarcastically meant to imply that I think its weird that people like them. I obviously know differently, but I still think it's weird. I find Eddie Vedder's voice to be one of the most grating in the world. Unfortunately, his vocal style has also become one of the most imitated over the last ten years. That makes me like him and them even less.

EV was a pioneer in his field and PearlJam had a huge problem. Their first album was AWESOME and there was no way they could top it. I think the same thing happened to Hootie and the Blowfish

As for Christian bands, when did LU change their policy regarding them? I know my wife had several of her heavy metal classics (Abba, Air Supply just to name a few) confiscated by her Coach on road trips. I told her she should have made up Christian sounding band names and she would have been fine

Isn't Abba Hebrew for "God the Father"? And didn't Air Supply have a hit called "Just As I Am"?
