Also, I don't think there's any chance of there being more qualified teams than playoff spots.

The champ from the SWAC will always skip the playoffs anyway, so that league is out. The chances for the Pioneer League champ to have eight DI wins and two wins against auto-bid leagues are very small. The MAAC champ (if that league even still exists) won't have enough DI wins. So it's basically a provision for the Big South or Northeast champ to grab a bid if it meets the requirement.

Do you think it is possible that we meet the other criteria and aren't in the top 16?

To dumb this down:

If we finish with eight D-I wins this year and are ranked in the top 16, we're GUARANTEED a playoff spot.

If we finish with seven or more D-I wins this year and are ranked outside of the top 16, we have to try to get an at-large bid.
