LOS ANGELES -- The NBA has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday at a Los Angeles hotel, where Kobe Bryant is expected to be announced as winner of his first Most Valuable Player award.
Discuss.

(let's keep this from a "I-hate-the-NBA" slamfest. If you don't care...move on).

This is one year where I really can say that I have no clear cut choice for MVP. But I agree that Paul probably has the strongest argument based on true value to team.

Paul didn't win because the Hornets left Charlotte.

It's hard to believe it will be Kobe's first. I do agree that Paul should have been in the running but if we're going to include Paul, we have to include Garnett. Yes, he has Pierce and Allen but he has played out of his mind this year.

I think Paul is being a little bit overrated right now--people are calling him the greatest ever. I don't think people realized how good a team NO was coming in to the season. West is probably the best kept secret in all of basketball.

Kobe had an MVP type season...but Chris Paul is more of an MVP then Kobe...but since Kobe has never won it he got the pitty vote...oh well

and when garnett was out the celtics still won....he is not the MVP of the team...I think that the team depends more of how Paul Pierce plays...whenever I have seen the celtics play their best Pierce is at his best, and their worst...well pierce sucks it up....

I have to say Kobe and CP3 are equally valuable to their team. Kobe had the better record, so he got MVP. I think that's basically what it came down to. You can say all you won't about how bad of a teammate he is and that he is a cancer and blah blah blah, but I have to say he did a heck of a lot to change that and show he can be a team player.

Kobe stepped up this year that is for sure, for the first time in a long time he kept his mouth shut and just played basketball...maybe he has finally grown up....i do think the Chris Paul is more valuable to his team then Kobe is to his...with that said nobody can really argue too much against Kobe getting it....he for sure deserved it over Kevin Garnett

So when did it become common for awards to be known before they are actually awarded. I know it has been a while now, but it seems like every award is leaked ahead of time except for maybe the Heisman...I mean, for the last two weeks, we've had headlines of, "Kobe to be named MVP tomorrow"..."Byron Scott will be named Coach of the Year" tomorrow....didn't you just 'name' them that when you said it? Kinda of takes the suspense out of it. It's almost like when you see a headline like, "Winthrop will hold a press conference tomorrow to name Horrez their new golf coach."...I'd like to see more 'surprise' award announcements and press conferences. But I guess it's gotten to the point where the media/bloggers/etc. are so ingrained into the inner workings of everything that nothing can ever happen without it getting leaked beforehand.
