the patriots come to town for a 3pm game at worthington stadium. Mason (23-21 overall, 14-8 CAA) beat georgetown yesterday 13-8 and has won four out of their last five games. LU (22-22 overall, 9-6 big south) is coming off losing only their second big south series of the year to winthrop, but should be rested after having tuesday off.

We lose 7-6 in 11 innings. The Colonial conference just has our number this year. Very disappointing!

coaching error when they scored 5 in the 5th or 6th, i forget what inning it was...

two on via walks, pitcher has given up 2 runs and 2 walks, one out. should've brought the new pitcher in before the old pitcher walked the third runner to load the bases.

A. new pitcher the batter hasn't seen
B. someplace to put him if the pitcher needs to get used to the game
C. the old pitcher has just walked 2 in a row (3 in the inning) and given up two runs - they have his number

if the change is made before the bases are loaded, its harder for GMU to put extra runners on base and across the plate. they scored 5 that inning. not the old pitcher's fault, he's just doing what he's supposed to be doing. the coach has to make the call to change when he sees his guy is getting tired or into trouble.

Thank God you're not our baseball coach.

Let's see:

a) Meaningless non-conference game late in the season
b) Freshman pitcher on the mound in trouble

Ok, let's see what he's made out of. Let's see if he can pitch out of the jam and learn from it. This is how young pitchers grow up and get better. Obviously he didn't pitch out of it and get himself out of the jam, but chances are he learned from it. You take every opportunity you can in this meaningless non-conference games to teach and develop the younger players. Anyone who's ever played a competitive team sport over the age of middle school knows that.

Also, this point is just dumb. The batters hadn't seen the player that was currently pitching because he didn't come into the game until the top of the 5th. Either way the next batter wouldn't have seen Rusty pitch.

I made sure to DVR that show, will probably watch it sometime this weekend. A beerguy can never know too much about beer history.

As for the CAA, while it is the best midmajor conference overall (yes, it is WAY better than the SoCon-there, I said it)-at least on the East Coast, assuming you don't count the Atlantic 10 and C-USA as midmajors, it is definitely a step below the Big South in baseball. Losing this many games to teams from that league is  not only to us but the Big South, OUR conference. However, we win the Big South tourney and all those losses will be forgotten b/c we'll be a 4-seed in some regional somewhere, just like the CAA champ.

-Sigh- We weren't playing to win, we were playing to get experience. It's non-conference, get over it.

I hope that's not the case. I understand right now the conference games are all that matter, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't play to win.

I oversimplified a bit, but in essence, we weren't throwing all the big guns at them in hopes of blowing them out of the water...

I knew that was what you were trying to say, but it doesn't sound good to say we weren't trying to win. And that's not the truth, of course we wanted to win :D

how many opportunities were we put in to win ..........and didn't capitalize.. why can we not buy a base hit with the winning run on second or third.............who do you want to blame for that? and...........how many times has that happened this year? a stolen base or two and the "BIG GUNS" STRIKE OUT OR POP UP TO CATCHER OR FIRST!
MUST BE THE COACHES FAULT.............WHAT DO YOU THINK?

No way is the Big South better than the Colonial this year. In year's past yes but not this year. Coastal is all the Big South has this year. Winthrop is down and so is VMI and there ain't much else. I would see the Colonial with a slight edge over the BSC but nothing like the disparity the Colonial has over the BSC in football.

And yes these out of conference games are important and do mean something. Even though baseball is not a big money sport like football or men's hoops never underestimate the importance of these in state games not just the Colonial but VA Tech and UVA too. Sports fans in Virginia can much more relate to the JMU's, VCU's, and VTech's of the world rather than teams like Radturd, Chuck South, or High Point.
