Well its the time of my life where I will soon be graduating from college and needing to get a halfway decent job and the same goes for my wife. I have started sending out my resume and my radio demo out to different stations, 3 of them being in Florida and one being in Nashville. I am looking around as we speak at some other places. Anyways, if you guys think of it pray for this whole thing that everything works out. I heard back from a guy in West Palm Beach today, so we shall see how that goes. But yeah...prayers would be much appreciated!

also, I am sure I am not the only one on here graduating in May and attempting to get a start in the "real world", so if anybody else in the same boat want to use this thread to put their requests out there feel free...we all could use some prayer as we make the adjustment...

thanks guys, its appreciated!

Demo tapes on desks are a dime a dozen. You need to get in your car and drive and introduce yourself to potential employers. And I would suggest expanding your search.

Prayers for you and other graduates. Being a recent grad, I know the difficulties that come with looking for a start to your career.

thanks for the advice man...appreciated. The thing that is helping me is knowing people pretty established in radio. I have two very good possibilities right now. We shall see how that goes. The thing about this business with the limited knowledge I have is that it is more about who you know which I didn't really believe until I mentioned to one of the guys I talked to recently that I knew this one guy...he all of a sudden was completely different towards me. Pretty funny....

anyways, thanks for the prayers guys...appreciated!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I've already got the job, we've just got to convince the companies to start sending work in the Lynchburg area so I don't have to drive to Martinsville to work.

I've got a crappy full-time job. I don't know if that's a better or worse situation than yours.

That's what the contractors working with Enron, Dynegy & WorldCom used to say.

Except Countrywide has someone ready to buy them. It just has to go through and BOA has to do things like they say they are.

Enron & Dynegy both had buyers and still exist today in some form. But they were never the same again. I can't even imagine anyone ever touching Countrywide ever again after the mess they created. They may not quite reach Bear Stearns territory but they are close.

Radio is more about networking than any business I've ever been attached to and I have been around the block a few times. Cronyism rules and talent often has very little to do with how the business operates. And I say this as someone who has been both on the outside looking in and on the inside. But meeting someone in person can help overcome the lack of contacts that is inevitable when you are first starting out.

I'll be graduating in December with a degree in Finance and am worried about finding a good job. Right now I'm a bank teller and my wife makes a lot more than me. I really don't know exactly what I want to do but I want to stay in the Greensboro area. Any ideas or suggestions that I should follow at this point to be prepared when graduation rolls around?

I don't think there's too much of a market for entry level positions right now. So 1st, don't get divorced. 2nd, you're already in with the bank. I'd start there. 3rd, wouldn't you like to be your own boss? I've got a business that I can sell to you where everytime you make a sale, I make money as well. And once you're in with us, you can sell this to as many people as you'd like. It can send you on your way to financial independance! You'll just need to give me $10,000 and I'll grant you the authority to sell this business to others. See my website http://www.quixtar.com for more details.

Even if Countrywide get bought out by BofA, it doesn't not mean your job will be safe. Take if from someone who worked for BofA the last six years and got laid off. For the last couple of merger with BofA they laid off people the same year. I have heard from some inside people within BofA that they will be layoff again this year, only a larger scale then last year.

I don't work for BOA or Countrywide. Our work just depends on them.

I would suggest working a utility provider if you have that option. I work for a publicly traded electric company that provides awesome benefits including a matching 401K (immediate vesting) and a pension.

Finance drives a lot of these decisions made at a utility due to the sheer infrastructure size. Utilities make $100m capital decisions every year and they want a decent return on it. There are so many options in a utility for a person with a finance degree. You can also get into energy trading if you like – the field I am in.

I believe Sly will back me on this when I say there are great paying jobs to be had in utilities. Maybe this is an option for you.

Best of luck to the graduates: it is a roller coaster getting the first job.

If you strike out elsewhere like me there's always insurance to fall back on. The product in mandated by the state so there's always a customer and their books are highly regulated by the states so there's typically no Enron situation. I just pointed it out because Nat'wde has an operational center in Lynchburg that I deal with occasionally and my own employer has a large center in Charlottesville - 1000 plus employees. For whatever reason, the pay and stability is generally better then banks which tend to get bought out often.

There's a potential Enron situation in every company. That is why if you are a publicly traded company you must be compliant under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Also, Enron was regulated by FERC/NERC and what ever states they operated in (wholesale and retail power). But to your other point, insurance is also a great field for finance majors especially for the back office jobs of calculating risk for profit.

Most insurance companies are mutually owned, not publicly traded, and non are regulated by the federal gov't. They all fall under 50 different insurance department's oversight which tend to be much stricter due to public policy issues should one default in a major event. They are required to keep billions of dollars in reserves so they can survive the so called rainy day. My employer has about $73 billion ready if needed. Geico is one notable exception to the mutual ownership but their reserves are regulated just the same.

Utilities are certainly terrific employers these days. My brother-in-law is a finance grad from UT and he has had bidding wars for him down here among several energy companies.
