That's exactly what I think. However, I think it through more than you. I think they should be able to be drafted out of high school and then have the choice to go to school or go to the league. That way, the random high school player each year who thinks he's going to be a star but doesn't get drafted can still go to school and not be screwed out of being a student-athlete. That's how it is in baseball.
yeah...I agree with you...but since I don't think the ncaa will ever allow that it puts pressure on the nba to have an age limit...

I think this player development thing is probably one of the better things to happen. The two major basketball organizations in the country coming together to try to teach young kids the fundamentals that are laking can do nothing but help the game in my opinion....

And it would screw up recruiting for the college

You're exactly right. It's like that in baseball. Kids say, "I'm going to college unless I get _____." Teams either agree to it or say, "Screw you, go to college." It forces NBA teams to decide do they take a chance on a kid, or do they go after proven college kids? It would completely shake up the draft, would bring college basketball back to what it used to be when there were programs and not teams, and would add another element to the NBA.

But with No salary cap, its a little easier to work with a flop

You're right. And that would lead to more GMs wanting to take the sure thing, which is the kid in college. This would in essence force more kids to go to college, without making it a rule.

Those who follow college baseball will know what I'm talking about simply because it goes on every year with recruiting and the draft.

If the rule were put in like in baseball, it would completely change up college recruiting and the NBA Draft in a way that I think can only help both leagues.

Except you left out the transferring to a JUCO to become eligible for the draft sooner part of the baseball equation.

I remembered that, just didn't want to confuse TBGBG more. Even then, they're still in school, and if I'm not mistaken, must at least get an associates before they can be draft eligible.

Another key component is that there is no basketball minor leagues tied to each team. Baseball has 3 tiers of leagues affiliated with each team. They can protect their interest and influence the growth of the player by putting them in the farm system in baseball. Hoops may be moving to that but it is not structured that way right now.

colleges are the minor leagues. it may not be the minor league by name but it is in execution.

Exactly. This would allow the kids who think they're good enough to declare for the draft, but if it didn't work out, they could still be a student-athlete in college. You've heard all of the stories about a kid being told he's good enough for the League, applying for the draft, then not being drafted and not being able to get a scholarship to play in college either.

Maybe you tweak it to say players can apply out of high school. If they get drafted, they must go pro. If they don't get drafted, they can still go to college but must stay through their junior year.

Well as long as you dont hire an agent you can still play in college if you arent drafted.

College is not the minor leagues. College is college. Baseball has college and 3 levels of minor league baseball. The difference between college and the minors is obvious. The teams don't have a right to a college player until after they leave college. Second, the team can't influence the development or even communicate with college players until they are drafted or declare themselves eligible for the draft. 3rd College is 4 years or less. Minor leagues can go forever in terms of development. Ryan Howard was a 27 year old rookie. His hoops counterpart would probably have given up his dream by now or been in relative obscurity overseas, still making money but never getting a shot at the NBA.

maybe the reason the NBA is in the shape it is now is BECAUSE kids can leave after 1 year... they should make the kids graduate with a degree in SOMETHING, so then they at least have a little maturity when they hit the show...

whats a 19 year old kid gonna do with $4 Mil/yr? nothing constructive, that's for DARN sure...

If a kid has a unique skill set that can make him millions, no organization should deny him from being able to use that to his advantage. I think it should be required that they give the kids a chance to go pro out of high school, but if they choose to go to college, they understand it is required they go for ___ years.

baseball puts the kids in the minors though............... these kids would have to hash it out in with the big timers. I agree that we should give kids a chance to go to the NBA right out of high school, (Lebron or KG). I agree SJ. Once a kid realizes hes not Lebron or KG. I think he should be required to stay in school for at least two years. This leads the NBA not only to pay the unique players more out of high school, but also ensures that the GM's are looking to draft the sure thing. I will call Stern and let him know of this discussion.

yeah and the kids who stay more than one year are always real mature too. ever heard of dennis rodman, ron artest, rasheed wallace, damon stoudamire (think back to his jailblazers days), ruben patterson, jayson williams (you know, the guy who murdered his butler or whatver it was), derrick coleman, keon clark, isaiah thomas, awvee storey, nate robinson, etc.

and don't forget all the thugs that come out of the NFL, which requires kids to play in college for 2 years (not what the rule says, but that is what it's effect essentially is). the NFL is in worse shape in terms of player behavior than the NBA is!
